Chapter 186: Chapter 186: Fireworks and the Double Curse
Regulus Black's innate golden finger belonged to necromancer abilities, while the magic he had learned in this world fell under wizardry. The combination of the two created quite a few new spells—many of which were reverse spells derived from existing ones.
The stag before him was composed entirely of magical power from the Patronus Charm. As for the charm itself, Regulus Black had designed a unique version suited only to himself, and even that was developed using Professor McGonagall's leftover mechanisms in the secret chamber.
Dumbledore silently scorned the greedy assistant who plundered school property.
In short, Regulus Black currently had no spells suitable for dealing with this situation.
Moreover, this Patronus had been summoned by Professor Remus Lupin, and all the magical energy came from him. Although the spell was cast via a wand enchanted by Regulus Black, the spell itself was infused with Lupin's will.
"Just like Lupin's unwillingness to accept being a werewolf, isn't it?"
Regulus Black looked at the stag bowing its head before him. That same stubborn will made this barely intelligent being lower its noble head—or perhaps, nothing was more urgent than survival.
"Regulus! Think of something!"
Hermione, understanding the current situation, looked at the stag with sympathy. She also knew that if Regulus Black had any means, he would've already acted—especially since even a Ravenclaw like her found the Patronus stag fascinating.
As he looked at Lupin collapsed on the ground from magical exhaustion, a spark of inspiration flashed through Regulus Black's mind.
He reached out to playfully flick Hermione's nose, then bent down to pick up the nearly shattered wand on the ground.
"Professor Remus Lupin, you should thank me! Although you'll never be able to use the Patronus Charm again, resolving your werewolf affliction is a fair trade."
Withering Body:This curse makes the target perceive their own impending death, feel their body aging, and eventually weakens them to death through the illusion of growing old.
Life Steal:A necromancer can absorb the life force of the target. This curse taps into the enemy's life source, converting it to heal and empower the caster.
Regulus Black began carefully imbuing the wand with his golden finger's curse skills. The process was slow and delicate, as the wand now served as the very source of life for the Patronus stag.
However, these two curses weren't meant to attack the stag—but someone else.
The unconscious Lupin would likely never know that he would permanently lose the ability to summon a Patronus. At the same time, his transformations into a werewolf would be subjected to unprecedented suppression.
With both curses stabilized, Regulus Black moved on to a round of fine-tuning.
Using the wand as a conduit, he created a link between Professor Lupin and the stag Patronus, and then set Lupin's werewolf transformation as the activation trigger.
With this setup, whenever Lupin transformed, no matter how far apart they were, the refined curses stored within the wand would be triggered.
Withering Body:The curse would cause the target to feel as though time had sped up physically, leading to a loss of bodily control. All life force, strength, and magic would fall out of their grasp, just as if they had aged and weakened.
Life Steal:The life, strength, and magic drained from the target would be converted into the caster's own life force, strength, and magic.
With this configuration, the curse would absorb most of Lupin's vitality, strength, and magic while preventing him from harming others in his werewolf form—just like an old wolf nearing the end of its life. Yet, given a werewolf's robust vitality and tendency to explode with potential, it would lead to even more of his life force being drained. Once Lupin returned to human form, the curse would cease affecting him.
With all preparations complete, Regulus Black stabbed the wand directly into the head of the Patronus stag.
The wand, disrupted by magic, immediately began to fracture. But this was expected. The broken wand materials settled at the base of the stag's antlers, forming two distinct rune patterns.
"Go on now! Live in the Forbidden Forest for a while. If Harry Potter comes looking, you can meet him—let him believe you're something James Potter left behind."
Regulus Black spoke to the stag, thus wrapping up the matter.
"Regulus, you really are a good person."
Hermione hugged Regulus Black's arm. She had seen everything that had just happened, and it only confirmed her belief that her lover was a soft-hearted man at his core.
"Oh right! I haven't given you a name yet. How about... Fireworks?"
Regulus Black made the suggestion just as the stag prepared to leave. The noble creature gave a nod in agreement.
The silver firework-like figure, resembling a silver elf, stepped into the Forbidden Forest. Its purpose was to suppress Lupin's werewolf transformation.
"Let's go back! The Headmaster and the others are still waiting for us!"
Regulus Black wrapped an arm around Hermione and pulled out a wand—an unusual one crafted from a white caudal vertebra and silver strands of hair. This was one of the four wands Regulus Black had purchased, known as "Silver Thread and Jade Bone."
This Silver Thread and Jade Bone wand was best suited for summoning spells, corresponding to the necromancer skill category.
Summon Skeleton: Revives a skeleton from a dead body to fight for the caster. The summoned skeleton can be equipped with armor and weapons.
The Forbidden Forest was certainly not lacking in dead creatures. Regulus Black easily summoned a skeleton from nearby. This skeleton, however, was quite large, and it was clear there was a reason for that.
Hermione's eyes widened when she saw the approaching skeleton. But when she saw Regulus Black waving his wand beside her, she realized it must be connected to him. Since when could Regulus use such spells? Could this be dark magic?
The skeleton walked over to Lupin, then suddenly collapsed into pieces, adhering to the surface of Lupin's body.
Moments later, the unconscious Professor Lupin, now wrapped in skeletal armor, swayed unsteadily but stood up on his own.
"With this kind of transportation tool, there's no need for us to carry him ourselves. Hermione, you must always remember—you are a witch."
Regulus Black stowed away the Silver Thread and Jade Bone wand and began to lecture Hermione.
You see, when Ron was previously brought back to Hogwarts, it was Hermione and Professor Snape who had to support him physically. And it wasn't like Professor Snape was without a wand—Hermione definitely had hers on her. If you have a wand but don't use it, can you still call yourself a witch?
Hermione, of course, understood what Regulus Black meant. Thinking back on how she had struggled so hard to carry Ron back, she realized just how foolish she had been.
"Things were chaotic back then, and I panicked for a moment... Ron's as heavy as a pig."
Under Regulus Black's gaze, Hermione, who had wanted to defend herself, ended up shifting the blame to Ron instead.
Seeing Hermione quiet down and reflect on her mistake, Regulus Black chuckled silently.
One had to admit—many of the witches and wizards here lacked self-awareness. Often, when they could have used spells, they acted like ordinary people instead. Sure, there were cases where young wizards couldn't fully control their magic, but with enough practice, proficiency could be improved. The fact that no professor ever addressed this issue with students… Regulus really couldn't understand what the school was thinking.
"Hmm… Could it be that the professors did mention it, but the students just didn't bother to practice? If that's the case, then they're just lazy!"
Pondering the issue, Regulus Black continued walking toward Hogwarts Castle.
Back at Hogwarts, the group first went—per routine—to the infirmary.
The earlier version of Regulus Black from this timeline had already arrived, having brought Sirius Black and Harry Potter.
Now the later version of Regulus Black appeared again, delivering the still-unconscious Professor Lupin via the skeletal armor walking method.
With Ron, who had been brought back earlier by Hermione and Professor Snape, all the key players from tonight were finally accounted for.
"What a tiring night! But at least, everyone's safe and sound."
Looking at the unconscious, wounded, and disheartened group, Hermione let out a comment that wasn't exactly comforting for the patients.
Naturally, she was promptly kicked out by the infirmary's fierce matron, Madam Pomfrey.
"Alright, now we need to face the Headmaster again and give a full report of everything that happened tonight."
Regulus Black, along with Hermione, walked toward the Headmaster's office—only after making sure the other Regulus Black and Hermione from earlier had already left. Then, he stepped up to the door.
