Chapter 16: Bronya is coming to visit!
Nagazora City, Chiba Academy Outer Circle Area
Kiana, Raiden Mei, and Bronya, the three central figures of Honkai Impact 3rd, were initially set up as the last boss of this stage. However, against all expectations, they eventually joined the protagonist's group.
After half a day of relentless battle, the trio—armed with skills beyond reason in the face of the undead—forced their way out of Chiba Academy, carving a path through the blood-soaked battlefield.
As the white-haired heroine of the Honkai series, Kiana showcased the Kaslana family's signature gun-fu, using dual pistols to bring swift judgment to any zombie foolish enough to approach her.
"Tsk! These annoying things just won't stop coming!"
Kiana fired another shot, clean and precise. The bullet found its mark, piercing straight through the eyeball of an approaching zombie, leaving a gaping hole in its head.
But there were simply too many of them. Even Kiana's impeccable marksmanship couldn't make her bullets last forever. Before long, her magazines ran dry, and the temporarily cleared area was once again swallowed by an unending tide of undead.
Of course, Kiana had anticipated this moment.
With a swift motion, she kicked away a zombie lunging at her, sending it flying five or six meters. Then, without hesitation, she reached behind her and pulled out a metal bat—one that was clearly bent out of shape from excessive use.
The zombies seemed to pause for a moment, almost as if questioning her morality.
"You're already dead! Stop getting in my way!"
Switching to close combat, Kiana relied on the raw physical strength of the Kaslana bloodline. With a single, explosive swing—
Boom!
A zombie's head was crushed on the spot, red and white matter splattering like a burst watermelon.
Dripping with blood, Kiana swiftly retreated, temporarily passing the battlefield over to Raiden Mei, who wielded a heavy machine gun.
"Mei, I'm counting on you!"
"Leave it to me, Kiana!"
Raiden Mei took over the front lines, unleashing a storm of bullets. Under the relentless suppression of the machine gun, the zombies couldn't even get close.
While Mei held the line, Kiana quickly reloaded her pistols and seamlessly rejoined the fray, taking down zombies one after another.
Then, without warning, an elite-tier Honkai beast, impervious to regular firearms, burst through the surrounding buildings and charged into the battlefield.
But before it even had a chance to show off—
"Target locked... Reinstall Bunny 19C, wake up. Now is not the time for a nap."
Bronya, lying in ambush from an elevated position, activated her heavy-armored bunny, switching it to melee spear mode. In an instant, she executed a flawless aerial backstab.
The Honkai beast, arrogant just seconds ago, now had a fresh hole in its head.
With the biggest threat eliminated, the remaining zombies—though numerous—were nothing more than obstacles in their way.
The three weren't here to wipe out every single enemy. Their objective was simple: break through.
After all, the zombies in this world weren't the result of some unsolvable virus. They were merely ordinary people who had failed to adapt to Honkai energy, their bodies succumbing before they could even transform into proper undead soldiers.
Thus, the so-called zombies here were nothing more than incomplete, defective remnants of the Honkai's corruption.
As for the real threats—the true Honkai creatures with terrifying abilities—only those with exceptional adaptability to Honkai energy could be transformed into them.
In short, as long as one's Honkai energy adaptability was high enough, even a direct bite or scratch from a zombie wouldn't automatically lead to infection or transformation.
And as the elite among elites, the trio had no fear of turning into zombies, no matter how many times they were bitten.
That said, they were still normal, beautiful girls—not self-destructive masochists.
Who in their right mind would willingly get bitten by zombies for no reason?
Fighting while retreating, they finally managed to escape the relentless horde by dusk.
Once they confirmed that they were no longer being pursued, Bronya deactivated the Heavy Armored Bunny, returning it to its quantum state.
But before the group could relax, a minor dispute broke out—Kiana, ever the reckless one, had almost been caught in Bronya's crossfire.
"Paramecium, do you ever think before acting?" Bronya accused, her cold expression unwavering.
"Tch! It's not like I got hit! You're worrying too much!" Kiana retorted.
Mei sighed, watching the two bicker. The day had been exhausting, and rest was now their top priority.
"Kiana, Bronya, let's stop arguing. It's getting late, and we need to find a place to rest for the night. We didn't get much sleep at the academy, did we?"
As the most composed and beloved among them, Mei understood the importance of settling down for the night.
Yesterday, they had been forced to spend the night in fear, trapped inside Chiba Academy.
Now that they had escaped, the thought of finding an actual house to rest in was incredibly appealing.
But in today's Nagazora City, where zombies roamed freely and Honkai beasts lurked around every corner, finding a safe resting spot was easier said than done.
"Pfft, what's the big deal? There's barely anyone left in this city besides us. We can just kick open any empty house and claim it for the night, right?" Kiana suggested, puffing up with confidence.
"Kiana is such an idiot," Bronya said, expressionless. "Chiba Academy is at the heart of Nagazora. If we settle down anywhere nearby, we'd be practically inviting the zombies and Honkai beasts to come for us."
Bronya wasn't just being contrary—her reasoning was sound.
The central district, where Chiba Academy was located, had once been densely populated. That population had now transformed into an overwhelming horde of zombies, making it one of the worst possible places to seek refuge.
Staying here overnight? That was just asking for trouble.
"If Mei-sister wants to find a safer place to rest, Bronya suggests we head to the outskirts of Nagazora. It's not far from here, and though it will take some time to get there via back roads, it has the lowest population density. The probability of encountering danger is significantly lower compared to staying here."
Bronya pulled out a map, pointing to a suburban residential area she deemed the safest option.
Yet, unbeknownst to her, the very location she had chosen...
Was the same place where Lunelle was currently hiding.
Fate, as always, had its own plans.
