Chapter 249: Story 249: The Bridge of Shadows
Damien and Mira moved through the ruins of an old industrial town, following Bishop's lead along narrow alleyways and across broken bridges. The amulet, now in Mira's possession, cast an eerie glow that illuminated the shadows around them, making their path feel both haunted and surreal. This town was infamous for ambushes and traps laid by survivors—if any remained.
Bishop gestured for them to stop as they reached an old bridge overlooking a ravine. Below, stagnant water glistened under the moonlight. "The Zombie King's scouts patrol this area. We have to be quick," he whispered, but his tone carried an edge, a hint of impatience that Damien couldn't ignore.
"Where's this lead?" Mira asked, her fingers subconsciously gripping the amulet as if it were a lifeline.
"Across, there's a bunker where some survivors are hiding. They might have information," Bishop replied, but his eyes never met hers.
The three began crossing the bridge, but halfway, a low growl echoed from the shadows beneath. The sound was unmistakable—a pack of feral zombies, lurking below, waiting to strike. Damien tightened his grip on his weapon, his senses sharpened. "This isn't just scouts; it's an ambush."
Mira's eyes darted to the amulet in her hand, then back to Damien. "What if we used this to draw them away? It's a risk, but if the amulet controls them—"
Bishop intervened. "Or it could bring more of them right to us." His voice was a mixture of urgency and annoyance, as though he knew more about the amulet than he let on.
Without waiting for a response, Bishop yanked the amulet from Mira's grasp and held it above the bridge. The glow intensified, and suddenly, the undead below began to growl louder, clambering up the rocky sides of the ravine.
Damien pushed Mira behind him as the zombies drew closer. "What are you doing, Bishop?" he shouted, realizing too late that Bishop had his own agenda. The amulet's glow was a beacon, drawing zombies from every direction. Bishop grinned, a dark satisfaction in his eyes. "This is the only way to test its full power."
The first wave of zombies surged onto the bridge, teeth gnashing and claws scratching at the air. Damien fought furiously, each swing of his blade a desperate attempt to keep Mira safe. Mira, realizing the betrayal, grabbed for the amulet. Bishop snarled, holding it out of reach as the bridge swayed under the weight of the undead.
In the chaos, Damien managed to knock the amulet from Bishop's grasp. It clattered across the bridge, landing precariously on the edge. For a moment, everyone froze—then Mira darted forward, seizing the amulet.
With a powerful focus, Mira held it high, and the undead halted, their red eyes flickering. She whispered something inaudible, and the zombies staggered backward, retreating as if in response to her command. Discover stories at empire
When the last of them had vanished, Mira turned to Damien, her face flushed but resolute. Bishop was nowhere to be seen, having slipped away in the confusion. She handed the amulet to Damien, her voice calm. "If we're going to survive, we need allies we can trust. No more secrets."
Damien nodded, feeling the weight of her words. Their journey had just grown more perilous, but they now had something even more valuable than the amulet—trust in each other.
