Chapter 465: Story 465: The Spiral of Shadows
The team stood at the bottom of the ladder, their breaths misting in the damp, frigid air. Above them, the distant light from the surface was now a faint memory, swallowed by the endless spiral they had just descended. Before them lay another challenge: a tunnel carved into the rock, its walls slick with moisture and etched with cryptic symbols glowing faintly in green.
"Looks like we're right where they wanted us," Viper muttered, scanning the walls with suspicion.
Bulwark's heavy boots echoed ominously as he stepped forward. "This place screams trap."
"It's always a trap," Rook said, his voice steady. "But we don't have the luxury of turning back. Stay close and stay sharp. Shadow, take point."
Shadow nodded, her sniper rifle at the ready as she moved into the tunnel. The walls seemed to pulse faintly, as if alive, and the symbols glowed brighter the deeper they went. The air grew colder, and the faint sound of dripping water was joined by something else—soft whispers, too low to make out but persistent enough to set their nerves on edge.
Ghost slowed his pace, his keen eyes scanning the shadows. "We're being watched," he said, his voice barely above a whisper.
Rook's grip on his weapon tightened. "Anything concrete?"
"Not yet," Ghost replied. "But it's close. Too close."
The tunnel opened into a massive, cylindrical chamber, its walls rising impossibly high into darkness. A spiraling staircase made of rusted metal wrapped around the chamber, leading up toward an unseen exit. At the center of the room was a pit, glowing with the same sickly green light they had seen throughout the catacombs.
"What is this place?" Shadow murmured, her voice echoing faintly.
"It's ancient," Bulwark said, his voice uncharacteristically subdued. "Older than anything we've seen so far. Whatever's at the top of that staircase… it's important."
Before anyone could respond, the pit began to pulse, and the glow intensified. The whispers grew louder, forming incomprehensible chants. From the green light, figures began to rise—distorted humanoid shapes with translucent skin and glowing eyes.
"Contact!" Viper shouted, her blade gleaming as she prepared for combat.
"Hold the staircase!" Rook barked. "Bulwark, keep them off us! Ghost, cover Shadow as she climbs. Viper, you're with me."
Bulwark unleashed a torrent of gunfire, his heavy weapon mowing down the creatures as they advanced. Shadow moved swiftly up the spiral staircase, her steps silent despite the rusted metal groaning under her weight. Ghost followed close behind, picking off enemies with precise shots.
Viper and Rook held the line at the base of the stairs, engaging the creatures in brutal close combat. Rook's strikes were calculated and powerful, while Viper's movements were a blur of speed and precision.
"Shadow, what do you see?" Rook called out as the battle raged below.

"I'm near the top," Shadow replied. "There's a doorway… but it's sealed. I'll need time."
"Make it quick!" Rook shouted, slamming a creature into the ground.
The team fought with everything they had, knowing that the key to their survival lay at the top of the spiral.
