Chapter 470: Story 470: The Doorway of No Return
The wooden door swung shut behind the team with a deafening thud, sealing them into a narrow corridor of raw stone. The air was damp, thick with the earthy scent of moss and decay. At the far end of the corridor, another door stood, nearly identical to the first, but this one was more ornate—its surface adorned with carvings of twisting vines and ominous faces.
"We're locked in," Viper said, testing the door behind them. "No turning back now."
Shadow moved to examine the new door, her flashlight casting erratic beams of light across the carvings. "This one's different," she murmured. "The symbols are… reactive." As she traced a finger over one of the faces, its eyes glowed faintly, and a faint hum filled the air.
Rook stepped forward. "We don't have time to admire the craftsmanship. Shadow, can you figure it out?"
"I think so," she replied, pulling out her notebook. "But this door is more than just a lock. It's a test."
Ghost scanned the walls and ceiling, his suppressed pistol at the ready. "Tests down here don't usually come without a price. Stay sharp."
As Shadow worked to decipher the symbols, the corridor began to tremble. Fine dust rained down from the ceiling, and faint whispers seemed to echo from the stone itself.
"What was that?" Bulwark asked, his grip tightening on his weapon.
"Not good," Shadow said without looking up. "These carvings are part of a mechanism. If I make a mistake…" She trailed off, her brow furrowing in concentration.
Rook glanced back at the team. "Stay on high alert. Whatever's waiting for us, it knows we're here."
Shadow pressed one of the glowing faces, and the hum grew louder. The door began to shift, its carvings rearranging themselves into new patterns. Suddenly, the ground beneath their feet shook violently, and sections of the walls slid open, revealing skeletal figures clad in rusted armor.
"They're waking up!" Viper shouted, raising her blade.
"Defensive positions!" Rook barked. "Hold them off while Shadow finishes!"
The skeletal guardians moved with surprising speed, their hollow eyes glowing a spectral blue. Bulwark unleashed a volley of gunfire, shattering several of the figures, but more emerged from the walls. Ghost moved with precision, taking out targets with silent efficiency, while Viper engaged in close combat, her blade flashing in the dim light.
"I need more time!" Shadow yelled, frantically pressing symbols on the door. Each correct press seemed to slow the guardians, but a single mistake caused them to surge forward.
"Shadow, hurry!" Rook growled, slamming one of the skeletal figures into the wall.
With a final press of a glowing symbol, the ornate door emitted a deep, resonant tone and swung open. The skeletal guardians froze mid-attack, their glowing eyes dimming as they collapsed into piles of dust.

The team rushed through the doorway, and the door closed behind them, sealing the guardians out.
In the next chamber, a massive stone staircase spiraled downward into the darkness. Rook looked back at his team, their faces weary but determined.
"Whatever's at the bottom of this," he said, "it's not going to let us take it without a fight."
