How To Hide The Tyrant's Child In The Apocalypse

Chapter 10: 10. I am loosing everything without you

AFTER A WHILE

EMPEROR LIANWEI POINT OF VIEW:

I sank into the cold marble chair in my chambers, heart hammering with a rage I couldn't release. How could she disappear? After everything… after us. Days turned into weeks. The castle felt colder, emptier without her. Every whispered rumor, every futile search report only twisted the knife deeper. I could barely breathe under the weight of not knowing.

A month later, the empress, my mother, came to my study. Her silk robes rustled softly, but she didn't bring the usual arrogant presence. Instead, she looked… concerned. Even worried.

"You can't carry this burden alone, my son." She said quietly, sitting opposite me. "The realm is unstable. The crops are failing, the people restless. You must show strength."

I clenched my fists.

"How do I show strength when the one I want is nowhere to be found?"I asked.

Her eyes softened, but her voice remained steady.

"She is gone, yes. But you must not lose yourself to despair. If you do, all of us fall."She said.

I stared at the floor, the emptiness echoing inside me.

"I feel like I'm already falling."I said and sighed.

The Empress reached out, briefly touching my arm.

"Then let me help you stand."Empress said.

I wanted to believe her. I needed to for myself and our people.

I stood at the edge of the map-strewn war room, staring at lines and shaded regions as if they were her face, so familiar, so achingly absent.

"Report." I rasped to the captain.

"Northern mountain trails are cold. No sign of her. Search parties found abandoned campfires, but-"He started.

"Just embers and ashes." I finished. I closed my eyes. All this effort… ends in nothing.

Crop disasters, rising unrest, my council demands solutions, but my soul is elsewhere. I pace corridors like a man chained to ghost memories. Each note, each rumor, each name, nothing brings her back.

At the evening the Empress Dowager enters my private chambers gently, unannounced. My head snaps up, eyes hollow.

"Son." She said, voice softer than silk. "The empire... it needs you fully. Not just your title, but your strength."

I lean back, rubbing temples tight.

"I'm half here, half lost somewhere she should be."I admited.

She studies me, eyes filled with unspoken empathy.

"You must carry the throne and the burden of her absence. Both halves of you must heal."She said and I nodded.

I stare into her eyes, seeing the depths of her loyalty. But my grief is deeper.

"How do I rule when my heart is broken?"I asked.

She places a steady hand on mine.

"By remembering why you rule. Your life, our empire matters beyond longing."She said and I had no other choice but nod in agreement.

At late evening, I am in the garden, alone, breathing in star-cold air. My hands ball into fists full of determination.

"I will find you. I'll bring you home."I whispered to the sky."Return to me Mei Shen."

AT THE SAME TIME

MEI SHEN'S POINT OF VIEW:

The morning sunlight crawled across the polished floorboards, spotlights on the dusty edges of the room. My belly had barely begun to round, but the life growing inside me pulsed with steady assurance, my secret, my hidden hope. I sat quietly by the window, sipping a morning tonic, when the soft chime in my mind sounded the familiar, mechanical note of the system.

"Warning! Apocalypse trigger detected. Protocol activation required."System said.

I nearly choked on the tonic. My heart thundered as the words spun in my head. "

"Apocalypse? System, explain yourself!"I shouted.

"Current era shift: civilization-level crisis initiated. Suggested response: immediate resource assessment & safe zone preparation."System said.

I swallowed, hands trembling. The world beyond this village was collapsing. The empire, his empire, was on the brink of ruin. It never happened in the book, so I had no idea how to help them even if I wanted to. My world shifted in an instant. A new fight had begun. Not for me, not for love, not even just for my baby but this was for survival.

A few months later I watched as mountains towering spines rose high above my cottage, cloaked in early snow and the quiet whisper of wind. I had come here for peace, for safety. For the baby still growing inside me. Each day was simple. Gather herbs, trade with the hidden villagers below, and write letters I never sent. My body had begun to change again, more than just the pregnancy. I was stronger in some ways, slower in others. The air here was thinner, but cleaner. Purer. And for a time… I almost forgot about him. Almost.

But the dreams returned. Visions of golden halls, of fire crackling behind red silk drapes, and a man I once knew standing in shadow, eyes sunken, voice cracked with something I barely recognized, grief. Then, it came. The moment I couldn't ignore.

"Vital status detected: Subject Lianwei. Health: critical decline. Warning: mental and physical deterioration progressing rapidly."System said.

I dropped the herbs I had been drying by the window.

"No." I whispered. "He was fine. He's strong. He's-"

"System suggestion: subject may require emotional or medical intervention. Proximity recommended."System said.

My heart twisted. I hadn't thought about going back. Could I even go back? Would he recognize me after all this time? Would he hate me for running? And yet… the memory of his arms around me, the kiss stolen beneath cherry blossoms and his little touches I liked even though I knew loving him was too dangerous for me. I looked down at my swollen abdomen.

"Your father's breaking, little one. And I don't know if I should help put him back together… or let him fall apart."I whispered to the wind.

The wind howled through the trees. It didn't answer. But the ache in my chest did. I didn't know what I was waiting for. A sign, maybe. Or permission to make a mistake.

"System." I said softly. "What… what would you advise?"

There was a pause. Then the familiar chime.

"Current parameters suggest risk to subject Lianwei exceeds 74%. Potential collapse of regional stability. Emotional distress. Self endangerment. Continued absence may intensify all factors."System said.

I blinked.

"So I should go back?"I asked.

'Caution: returning presents its own risks. Possible confrontation. High emotional volatility. Involuntary exposure of pregnancy."System said.

"That's not an answer." I muttered, pressing my knuckles to my lips."

"System cannot choose for you."System said.

Of course not.

"Wonderful." I sighed, eyes shut. "So either I go back and face the storm, or stay here and pretend it's not thundering."

Then the air shimmered lightly, and his voice curled through my thoughts in usual smug tone.

"Ah, decisions, decisions. My precious flame running away from the very drama that makes you interesting. Do you miss him yet, little dove? The way he looked at you like you held the stars? Or was it the kiss that broke your knees?"Zeyrith asked.

"Zeyrith, don't."I said.

"Don't what? Don't say that he's unraveling because you haunted him every night for three months? That he's dying to find you while you sit here nesting like a terrified forest spirit?"He asked.

"I'm not ready." I whispered. "I can't just walk back like that you know? Pretend like I didn't drug him and disappear?"

"No, no, no. Don't pretend. You should dramatically appear in the middle of his throne room in the middle of court while your belly is visible. Wearing red. Oh, the tension. I could sip wine off the awkward silence alone."Zeyrith said.

I groaned and buried my face in my hands.

"Zeyrith, for once in your eternal existence, shut up."I groaned.

"Fine, but if you let the man wither into madness without at least giving him a glimpse at your swollen belly, you're not running from love, darling. You're running from yourself."He said.

Silence. Just the wind and the mountains again. And the soft, steady heartbeat beneath my palm.

"System." I said quietly. "How long would it take to reach the capital unnoticed?"

"Estimated: 9 days. 6 if urgent."System said.

I stood.

"I think we'll make it in five."I said.
