Chapter 25: 26
The sun shone on the Quidditch pitch, dyeing the grass a golden green. Kevin and his roommates had just finished flying practice, and the stadium's spectator seats were gradually filling up. Hufflepuff and Gryffindor students poured in in groups, and the red and yellow scarves intertwined into gorgeous patterns on the stands.
The audience in the stands sat in their respective college sections. Most of the seats for Hufflepuff and Gryffindor were occupied, while there were fewer people in the other two colleges, especially in the Slytherin stand, which had only a few dark green figures.
"There are more and more people," Fabian pushed up his glasses, a hint of surprise flashing across his bronze face. "I thought it was just an ordinary practice match, and not many people would come to watch."
Ernesto elegantly adjusted his robes that were disheveled by the wind, his gray eyes fixed on the sky. "Charlie Weasley's games are always full of spectators. He is the best Seeker at Hogwarts in the past ten years."
Just then, a familiar figure flew towards them on a broom. Cedric Diggory landed in front of them, his brown hair shining golden in the sun, and a gentle smile on his face.
"Kevin! I didn't expect to see you here." He glanced at the brooms in the hands of the four, "Are you practicing flying?"
Wesley waved his arms excitedly, "Cedric! Are you a Hufflepuff?"
"I'm the Seeker of our team," Cedric said modestly, but his eyes were shining with confidence. "This is my first time to officially become a Seeker. The captain asked me to practice more before the official game starts."
Then he looked at Kevin and Wesley's awkward broom-holding postures and said, "You can relax your wrists a little more and don't hold the broom handles too tightly… Yes, that's it."
Under Cedric's guidance, Kevin was surprised to find that he could control the broom more steadily. His gray-blue eyes looked up into the sky, and the dizziness he had felt before seemed to have eased a lot.
Cedric then said goodbye to Kevin and the other three and returned to the Hufflepuff team.
"The game is about to start!" Ernesto suddenly shouted, pointing to the entrance of the stadium. The two teams lined up to enter the stadium, the scarlet of Gryffindor and the bright yellow of Hufflepuff particularly eye-catching in the sun.
Kevin and his roommates hurriedly climbed up to the audience seats and found a seat near the front. On the commentary stand, a dark-skinned boy with dreadlocks was adjusting the magic loudspeaker. It was Lee Jordan from Gryffindor.
"Merlin's beard!" Wesley's eyes widened, "That commentator looks about the same age as us!"
"Lee Jordan, sophomore, seems to be roommates with George and the others," Fabian explained in a low voice.
Madam Hooch flew to the center of the court on her broom. She tapped her throat with her wand, and the sound spread throughout the court:
"Welcome to watch the practice match between Gryffindor and Hufflepuff! The rules are the same as the official match. Dangerous actions are prohibited, and friendship comes first."
The captains of the two teams, Charlie Weasley, and Albert Spencer, a fifth-year Hufflepuff student, shook hands in the air. Fourteen brooms rose into the air at the same time, forming two neat square formations above the field.
"The game begins!" Madam Hooch's whistle pierced the sky.
Lee Jordan's passionate voice rang out: "The Quaffle was caught by Gryffindor's Chaser, Alicia Spinnet! She made a quick breakthrough and passed the ball beautifully to Angelina Johnson! There was a gap in Hufflepuff's defense—"
Kevin's "Eye of Truth" was activated unconsciously. In his vision, the Quaffle dragged a blue magic trail, passing rapidly between the players. The two black Bludgers were hit back and forth by the Beaters.
"Look! The Golden Snitch!" Ernesto suddenly pointed to the northeast corner of the court. A golden light flashed by, and Charlie and Cedric also apparently discovered the Golden Snitch. They turned their brooms at the same time and rushed out like two arrows.
"Gryffindor leads 10-0!" Lee Jordan continued to commentate, "Oh! Wonderful interception! Hufflepuff goalkeeper Heinrich blocked a sure goal!"
The game went on smoothly, and unlike what Kevin had imagined, it was more like an elegant aerial ballet than a brutal fight. Gryffindor's chasers worked well together and scored points in succession, while Hufflepuff's defense gradually stabilized and they began to organize a counterattack.
It seems that the intensity of the game depends on the relationship between the two sides. I wonder what the match between Slytherin and Gryffindor will be like? Kevin thought to himself.
"70 to 40, Gryffindor is leading!" Lee Jordan's voice trembled slightly with excitement. "Wait—the Golden Snitch appears again! It's near the Slytherin stand!"
The audience gasped at the same time. Charlie and Cedric spotted the target almost at the same time, and the two brooms rushed in the same direction at an astonishing speed. Charlie was experienced and his flight trajectory was more direct; while Cedric's turning skills were amazing, and he could still remain flexible at high speed.
"They're going to collide!" Wesley grabbed Kevin's arm nervously.
Both rushed to the Golden Snitch, but it was obvious that Charlie was ahead of Cedric. However, in the current situation, even if Charlie got the Golden Snitch first, he would be hit by Cedric. At the critical moment, Cedric suddenly pulled up the broom and passed over Charlie. This beautiful dodge won the applause of the audience, but also made him lose the best pursuit angle.
"Charlie Weasley dives!" screamed Lee Jordan. "Is he gonna catch it?—He's caught it! Gryffindor wins!"
The whole place erupted in deafening cheers. Charlie held the struggling Golden Snitch high in the air, drawing a triumphant arc. Although Cedric was defeated, he still smiled and gave his opponent a thumbs up.
The two teams landed in the middle of the court and shook hands with each other. Charlie strode towards Cedric and patted him on the shoulder:
"That last dodge was so beautiful! Even though you're only a sophomore now, you'll definitely surpass me in no time."
Cedric smiled shyly: "Not even close, your dive angle is incredible…"
In the audience, all the students were still immersed in the excitement of the competition.
"It's so exciting!" Wesley gestured excitedly, "That turn! That dive! It's a hundred times more exciting than football!"
Ernesto rarely paid attention to the Muggle words in Wesley's words, his gray eyes sparkling: "Charlie's flight trajectory is perfect… Wait, they are coming!"
Charlie and Cedric walked towards the stands together, followed by the Weasley brothers and the rest of the team.
"How about it, future Ravenclaw members?" Charlie laughed heartily, the sweat on his forehead sparkling in the sun.
"I'm going to join the Quidditch team!" Ernesto announced immediately, his voice trembling slightly with excitement.
"Count me in!" Wesley jumped up. "I want to be the batter! Hitting the ball with a bat is so cool!"
Fabian also changed his usual gentle attitude and excitedly expressed his desire to join Quidditch.
Looking at his excited companions, Kevin couldn't help but sigh at the charm of Quidditch.
