Chapter 15: Chapter 15: The Unicorn and Buckbeak
"Woo…"
"I miss you too."
Deep within a pine forest in the Forbidden Forest, Evans knelt on the soft ground, gently wiping the long horn of the creature in his arms. The silver-white Unicorn, still young, whimpered aggrievedly, as if pouring out its long-unseen sorrow.
"Don't worry, I'm back," Evans soothed. "From now on, I'll come at least once a month… Twice! How about twice?"
After many more kind words, the little Unicorn finally stopped whimpering and rested its head in Evans's arms, seemingly intending to take a nap. Looking at the adorable creature, Evans couldn't help but stroke its head, an almost maternal smile on his face.
Once the little beast fell asleep, he raised his head and looked around. This was a beautiful pine forest halfway up a mountain, where green and red European pines stood tall among the slopes. Light and shadow dappled the forest floor, and a few emerald-green birds played among the pine needles, their wings refracting the sunlight into a colorful tapestry. And the Unicorns gathered around, either resting or playing, made the place seem even more like a fairyland.
Looking at the beautiful scenery, Evans leaned against a pine tree, comfortably narrowing his eyes. He had wanted to come here as soon as he'd returned to Hogwarts, but this place was not close to the castle, and even further from the seal. His mind had been consumed with breaking the puzzle that had eluded him four years ago, so he'd had no time. After finally breaking it, he had become immersed in studying history and had somewhat forgotten about this place.
It wasn't until today that he had time to see these lovely creatures again. And, most importantly, to comfort his good friend.
Looking at the silver-white head in his arms, Evans's lips curved into a soft smile. After four years, this little one had grown a lot.
As he combed the Unicorn's mane, his mind stirred, and he looked to the side. A fluffy head suddenly appeared in his line of sight, leaning against his arm with a tired and contented expression. Beside it, a large, blue-and-yellow bird looked at the approaching Unicorns and shyly burrowed behind Evans.
"Back from your adventure?" Evans pulled out a hand and flicked Nana's head.
After the last incident, he had learned a hard truth. From now on, whenever he left the castle for more than half a day, he had to bring these two with him. Alice was fine; she was just soft-hearted and wouldn't refuse others, so there was still hope for her. But Nana, this little devil, absolutely could not leave his sight again.
Thinking about how he had to run around the castle for two days straight to return all those stolen things, Evans couldn't help but flick the Niffler's head twice more. Perhaps it hurt, because Nana covered her head and, with an aggrieved expression, pulled out a few gold coins from her pocket and placed them in front of Evans.
"Did you just find these?"
Watching the little creature nod aggrievedly, Evans smiled and rubbed its head. "No need, just keep these for yourself."
At this, Nana, who had just been full of grievance, instantly broke into a smile and lay down on Evans's arm again. Evans closed his eyes, enjoying the rare tranquility.
Time passed, and after an unknown period, Evans was woken by the sound of leather boots stepping on pine needles. He looked to the side and saw Hagrid, holding a large bucket, standing behind him. Seeing him awake, Hagrid awkwardly greeted him.
"Good afternoon, Evans. Sorry, my footsteps were a bit loud."
"It's okay, it's time to wake up anyway." Stretching, Evans stood, waking the Niffler and Unicorn that had been leaning on him. "What are you up to?"
"I just got some fresh lamb, and I'm going to take it to Buckbeak."
"That Hippogriff?"
"Yes, when you saw him back then, he was just a child." Hagrid's expression grew emotional. "Now he's big enough to carry me for a flight around the castle!"
"Then he must be quite large," Evans said, picturing the scene. To carry Hagrid, the creature must have excellent stamina.
"How about it? Want to come and see him with me?" Hagrid asked, a proud look on his face, as if the Hippogriff named Buckbeak was a child he was very proud of.
"Then let's go together."
Patting the dirt off his pants, Evans glanced at the little Unicorn beside him. There was no need to ask. Looking at its teary-eyed expression, he knew that if he didn't take it, it would probably cry.
Evans looked at a tall, pure-white Unicorn not far away. "I'm taking Kelly out to play, and I'll bring her back before dusk!"
The tall Unicorn nodded gently. After getting permission from the parent, Evans patted the little Unicorn's head. "Let's go, I'll take you out to play!"
"You should know, when you meet Hippogriffs, you must first bow to them to gain their trust," Hagrid reminded Evans uneasily as they walked.
"Don't worry, I've seen this creature at my senior's place."
However, even though he had seen one before, Evans's eyes still held anticipation. At his senior's place, it had only been a quick glance; he hadn't interacted with one up close.
"Good that you know." Confirming that Evans understood the rule, Hagrid breathed a sigh of relief and focused on leading the way.
After more than ten minutes, they passed through some sparse bushes, and a flat rocky ground appeared before them. In the center of the rocks, a pure-white giant beast with a pair of huge wings and a bird's head was looking their way. Seeing Hagrid, it bowed slightly, offering a salute.
Hagrid, holding the large bucket, quickly bowed in return, then pulled Evans to his side and introduced him to Buckbeak. "This is Evans, you saw him when you were little, he—"
His words froze. Before Evans could even bow, Buckbeak had already extended his head and gently rubbed his cheek against Evans's.
Watching this scene, Hagrid had to admit, he was a little jealous.
To be acknowledged by a Hippogriff, one had to bow, not just out of etiquette, but because the act exposed one's neck, presenting a weakness to them. This gesture showed them you were harmless, allowing them to relax their guard. It was a racial instinct of Hippogriffs, and logically, it couldn't be changed. Even now, he and Buckbeak still had to symbolically bow when they met.
But why could Evans embrace him so smoothly? They had only met for the second time, and the first time, Buckbeak had been just a newborn.
I was the one who came first, Hagrid thought, feeling a pang of disappointment. I was the one who fed him and built our friendship…
Just as he was feeling secretly disheartened, another, even more incredible thing happened.
Evans, after getting Buckbeak's permission, flipped over and rode directly onto his back.
He can even be ridden now?!
Looking at Evans on Buckbeak's back, Hagrid felt his eyes welling up. He himself had only managed to get Buckbeak to agree to carry him for a flight after nearly a month of effort. He knew Evans had a magical talent that made magical creatures feel a certain fondness for him, but he had always believed that with effort and sincerity, he could compete.
But in the end… effort just can't compare to talent, can it?
