Chapter 23: Chapter 23: Stomping Charm
"Re'em Bulls are an extremely rare magical creature. Their blood can greatly increase the drinker's strength, which is one of the reasons for their rarity."
"They generally live in the wilderness of the Americas and the Far East. They look like giant wild oxen covered in golden fur, but even the largest wild ox is only half the size of a Re'em Bull."
Standing on a grassy field far from the castle, Evans flipped his palm, and several pieces of parchment flew out of his pocket, floating in front of Hermione. Since the Stomping Charm was to be taught, it was certainly not suitable to do so in the Library. Madam Pince allowing him to study and teach there was already a blessing; he couldn't push his luck any further.
He had chosen a lawn far from the castle because if they were too close, a certain tabby cat might randomly appear during his demonstration. This would greatly affect the quality of his teaching.
"The Ministry of Magic rates Re'em Bulls as XXXX, which means they can threaten a wizard's life. Only wizards who are familiar with their habits and powerful enough can handle these creatures," Evans explained. "But this rating is actually very rigid. It only considers whether the creatures' abilities can pose a threat to wizards, without considering their habits."
As he spoke, a hint of helplessness flashed in his eyes. He had always felt that the rating of magical creatures should not be so casually divided into five categories, but changing the deeply entrenched system was not something that could be achieved by publishing one or two books; it required a series of complex reforms.
In the short term, this rating would not change. However, he had discussed this matter with his senior a few years ago, and he believed that in the future, such ratings would undergo some changes.
Shaking his head, Evans continued his narration. "Re'em Bulls are very gentle creatures. They are timid and never actively attack anyone."
"However, although their temperament is gentle, their abilities are not so gentle."
"Every Re'em Bull is a darling of the earth. They gain strength far beyond their own when they touch the ground. In this state, every attack they make will trigger a small-scale earthquake. This is also the origin of the Stomping Charm."
"So the essence of this spell is to enhance strength?" Hermione asked, raising her hand.
Evans shook his head. "A simple Stomping Charm can only cause an earthquake effect, just like I demonstrated to the other students—cracking the ground and making it impossible for people to stand steady."
"The difference between the Re'em Bull's ability and the spell I reverse-engineered is that their power is enhanced by their bloodline. Only by obtaining this enhancement can the spell be fully unleashed. Otherwise, it's just a control spell."
It was precisely because of this that he could confidently offer this spell as a reward to his students. Otherwise, if he taught a bunch of young wizards who could cause the world to collapse with a single stomp, he would definitely be in trouble if they caused any incidents later.
"So without the Re'em Bull's bloodline, this spell cannot be fully unleashed?" Hermione concluded.
"No." Evans shook his head, refuting her words.
If it was a reward for being first in the year, the pure magical version of the Stomping Charm was enough. The purpose of that spell was to arouse curiosity, not to let them truly master it.
But his little witch who graded homework had said she chose this spell to protect herself. Naturally, he had to teach her the complete form.
"I know a potion formula. Once you master the basics of this spell, drink it, and you will have the opportunity to learn the true Stomping Charm of the Re'em Bull."
That was a potion formula he had worked on for a long time before successfully concocting it. With its help, even a human wizard could grasp a trace of the Re'em Bull's bloodline power and try to release the full version of the Stomping Charm. This was also the first reward he had obtained from the seal.
"Let me give you a brief demonstration of what the true Stomping Charm looks like."
With that, Evans drew his wand. But before the demonstration, some small protective measures were needed, including an enhanced Silencing Charm to prevent any strange tabby cats from appearing.
"Muffliato." His wand waved, and an invisible ripple spread out, quickly covering everything within a hundred-meter radius. Then, he pointed his wand at Hermione, and a translucent light flashed. Her body floated up a few meters, suspended in the air. She opened her mouth in a panic, wanting to ask what kind of spell this was, but was astonished to find that no sound came out.
It was only then that she noticed the abnormality around her. The sound of the wind, the rustling of leaves, and even the sound of the Black Lake in the distance had vanished.
But Professor Kahn's voice seemed unaffected. He waved his wand again, lifted his right foot slightly, and took a step forward.
"Terra Firma."
An invisible airflow swept across his body, converging behind him into a huge bull's horn. The next second, a jaw-dropping scene appeared before Hermione's eyes.
The ground instantly caved in as if struck by a meteor, forming a large pit with a radius of five meters. Around the deep pit, countless cracks spread outwards until most of the lawn was filled with ravines deep enough to swallow a person. The ground where the cracks passed trembled violently, and the strong shaking even shattered the rocks and vegetation into fragments, which floated down into the cracks.
Even without sound, this exaggerated scene touched Hermione's nerves. If Professor Kahn hadn't muted the sound, she believed the noise caused by this spell would have been enough to deafen her.
The intense tremor lasted for more than ten seconds before slowly subsiding. Evans's figure floated above the deep pit. After confirming the tremor had ended, he drew a circle in front of him with his wand.
"Reparo."
Unlike the exaggerated destruction, the restoration was effortless. After more than ten seconds, the cracked ground had completely returned to its original appearance, and even the deep pit was refilled, leaving no trace. He waved his wand, allowing Hermione to descend back to the ground. The feeling of solid ground beneath her feet finally brought her back from her shock.
Looking at the perfectly intact ground, Hermione recalled the astonishing scene from before. Even the trees had been shattered into pieces by the violent tremor. If someone had been standing on the ground just now, even if they didn't die, they would have been severely injured. And if this spell were cast directly at close range…
Imagining the scene, Hermione's body involuntarily trembled, but her eyes brightened. If she learned this spell, she wouldn't be so helpless when she encountered monsters like that large dog again.
Letting the parchment pieces float in front of Hermione again, Evans lightly tapped his wand, and another one flew out of his pocket.
"This is the incantation and wand movement for the Stomping Charm, as well as some insights I left when I created it. Once you master the basics, I can concoct a potion for you, allowing you to unleash the true Stomping Charm."
"Keep practicing! And remember not to forget to grade my homework!"
"Mmm!" Catching the parchment pieces, Hermione nodded earnestly.
By the way, why did she agree to help Professor Kahn grade homework in the first place? Looking at him, who showed no signs of embarrassment or discomfort and appeared completely unharmed, Hermione's little head spun for a long time. But her mind was filled with the professor's spell, and she couldn't remember what had happened before.
Never mind, she thought. Since I promised the professor, I must do it! Not just this time's homework. Professor Kahn has helped me so much; I also have to do more things to help him!
