Chapter 141: Chapter 139
Chapter 139: Is This Also Potions?
"Is this really potions? This is also considered potions?" Harry couldn't help but mutter in disbelief.
The potions curriculum in The Academy was fundamentally different from what was taught at Hogwarts. Harry found it hard to believe that the class they just attended could even be categorized as Potions.
Back at Hogwarts, potion-making resembled cooking. Harry had gotten the hang of it quickly. The general Hogwarts process was straightforward:
First came ingredient preparation. Unless the potion was meant to be used immediately or was a semi-finished extract, the components needed to be ground, chopped, crushed into puree, or had their juice extracted.
Next came the heating phase. The color of the liquid in the crucible had to be closely observed, and ingredients added at precise times.
Then came stirring — this part diverged from regular cooking. Magical potions required exact stir counts in specific directions: clockwise or counterclockwise.
Finally, the wizard's own participation. For Muggles, even performing the first steps perfectly would only result in a useless mess. Some potions even demanded wand involvement, accompanied by consecration spells — incantations that imbued the mixture with intent and identity.
However, the Academy textbook began differently. Right in Year One, it emphasized that a potion was a ritual, a mystical combination of material essence and magical resonance.
By contrast, their first-year potion classes barely used crucibles. While some potion ingredients overlapped with Hogwarts, the core of the process was radically different: the wizard's personal connection to the material.
Here was the Academy's approach:
Step One: Magical Immersion.
No wands involved. The wizard stared at the material and mentally pictured it as part of their own body. When they felt a slight warmth or loss of magic, the immersion succeeded. For beginners, direct touch was recommended to better connect physically and magically.
Step Two: Extraction.
This was where magic was directly applied — using a foundational spell that separated the material's essence into juices, crystals, or concentrated spirit. It was a key stage in every potion, and the most critical magical action in the process.
Step Three: Mixing and Assembly.
This was often delegated to Muggles or squibs living in Atlantis. Since no magic was needed beyond the extraction, many common potions could be completed without a wizard. For more complex brews, the wizard might still need to mix the components in a certain sequence or chant consecration spells.
The consecration spells themselves were richly documented in the textbooks, often rooted in Old English, ancient Norse, or other lost languages. These chants weren't just for theatrics — they gave the potion identity, allowing it to recognize its purpose before the magical spirit dissipated.
Harry was still stunned when Alexander Smith (previously known as Ryan) leaned over and smiled. He remembered his own reaction when he first opened the book years ago — a mix of awe and embarrassment.
Back then, Alexander had been cocky. He had traveled to Atlantis with Kate, thinking their "secret" magical knowledge and traditions from the surface world were superior. But one day, while exploring, he discovered a potion shop with a basement full of squibs and Muggles — not magical folk, but ordinary people mixing ingredients and mass-producing basic potions.
At the time, Alexander was preparing to construct the new Smith Castle. The project was draining both magical and financial resources. Seeing the efficient, assembly-line potion production of Atlantis shook him. If Muggles could do this with a bit of guidance, why had he spent so much energy and Galleons maintaining a struggling alchemy workshop?
That was when a lightbulb went off. Why not outsource the production of basic potions? Set up enchanted workshops in less-regulated countries. A few Confundus Charms, a supervising witch or wizard, and voilà — supply potions to the magical world at a fraction of the cost.
It was revolutionary.
And so began Alexander's long series of "visits" to Atlantis. After persistent efforts, he forged a strategic partnership: Atlantis would provide personnel and workspace, and Alexander would supply resources, channels, and magical formulations from the Smith family archives.
Everyone gained something.
Alexander earned Galleons.
Atlantis gained magical materials.
The wizarding world got cheaper and more accessible potions.
A win-win, all thanks to modernized magical economics.
Even Moon City, a magical research outpost on the far side of the world, began ordering potions through this supply line. Under Alexander's influence, they placed a huge order — a signal that even distant magical enclaves were starting to integrate.
And so, Alexander declared with pride: For the unity and future of the magical world — I, Alexander Smith, accept the responsibility!
Unknowingly, night had fallen.
Harry was still reading, reluctant to leave. But Alexander sternly reminded him, "Harry, maintaining a split consciousness between two bodies for too long will exhaust you. If you go now, you'll make it back in time for Hogwarts dinner."
"Alright," Harry grumbled. "Luckily, I got away from Ron for a bit today. My other body's been lounging in the Ravenclaw dorm. Otherwise, I'd have missed this chance."
He reluctantly closed the floating textbook. It shimmered briefly, then shot back into the air like a meteor to rejoin the "starfield" of the library.
Hermione, who had been silent for a while, spoke up. "Alexander, are we going to pass by the Staff of Poseidon on our way back?"
"There's no need," Alexander replied with a smirk.
He lightly touched the pendant on his necklace. In the next second, the four of them vanished — reappearing inside their other bodies back at Hogwarts.
Harry gasped as the familiar sensation of gravity returned. He opened his eyes, lying in his Ravenclaw bed, as if he had never left at all.
