After a short while, when the man finished speaking,
Xiang Nan was basically certain that the woman was a player from Nura: Rise of the Yokai Clan.
"Yōkai, deities, even onmyōji… Interesting."
Xiang Nan chuckled.
He had never expected that, after transmigrating, a player could actually become a yōkai.
Still, the "gods" in that world did not seem all-powerful; like the yōkai, they existed only because humans feared or worshipped them.
The biggest antagonist was the famous Japanese onmyōji, Abe no Seimei, and the setting featured many yōkai factions and camps.
The man from Basilisk: The Kōga Ninja Scrolls, however, remembered that anime only vaguely; his description of Nura: Rise of the Yokai Clan's power system—things such as Ranks and Arts—wasn't very detailed. Even so, it filled several gaps in Xiang Nan's intel.
Time slipped by.
The four of them kept hiding outside the city.
Soon the America's military arrived, right on schedule.
They sealed off the entire city and began a block-by-block sweep—including all of South Town on the ground—while reconnaissance aircraft patrolled the skies. The search force was massive.
Fortunately, the group had prepared for this and stayed well hidden.
A day and a half later, the system's first placement match finally ended.
[System: Ding! Congratulations—the surviving squad members have cleared Round 6 of the Extinction Game!]
[System: Ding! Your squad has inflicted resource damage on the hostile dimension. Scoring will begin based on performance…]
[System: Task complete. Players will now return to the main world. Please wait…]
"Thank you."
With the placement match over, the two anxious ninja finally breathed easier and thanked Xiang Nan and Beishi. Their simple camouflage jutsu could dodge soldiers, but not advanced sensors. Xiang Nan and Beishi, as Hunters, were fast enough to move them around constantly; otherwise, they might have been exposed during the last few dozen hours.
"Mm."
Listening to the system, Xiang Nan nodded at them.
Because those two had left the King of Fighters world earlier, settlement came quickly: they turned into two beams of white light and vanished.
Beishi noticed something odd—shouldn't the whole squad be teleported home together?
"Make a note of that world called Basilisk."
Without thinking too much, Xiang Nan spoke after the two disappeared.
"Huh?"
"It's a low-martial world—almost no real threat to Hunters like us. If we ever can, we should turn it into a resource farm… basically a pigsty for Hunter x Hunter."
Xiang Nan's voice was low.
Beishi had never considered that. He hadn't expected Xiang Nan to think so far ahead.
From the data on hand—including what they'd seen in Kengan Ashura—Xiang Nan realized that high-tier worlds can raise and exploit low-tier ones. He didn't yet know the method, but as the Reincarnation Dimensions unfolded, they would learn it sooner or later.
Now that they knew a world whose story hadn't even begun—and whose invasion risk was tiny—Xiang Nan would not let it go. He only hoped other players wouldn't grab it first.
"All right," Beishi nodded.
"I've finished settlement—"
The next second, Beishi vanished like the two ninja, leaving Xiang Nan alone.
[Player 1: 80 points — grade: Good.]
[Ding! Player 1 receives 735 Dimension Coins.]
[Ding! You killed an intruding player from another world and inherited a random 221 Dimension Coins.]
[Ding! The dead player's world now has a lower chance of invading Hunter × Hunter. You gain +1 Sin Value against that world; active invasion will unlock when enough is accumulated.]
[Ding! You have enough Dimension Coins to unlock a hidden quest. Execute?]
A burst of system prompts rang in Xiang Nan's ears.
"Hm?"
He opened the system screen at once.
He had only tried the Reincarnation Dimension once before, in Round 3 of the Extinction Game with Manman—earning an Excellent rating and 445 coins.
This time he got only Good, yet far more coins, proving the two missions had different difficulties.
And you even profited from killing another intruder?! The system was plainly encouraging players to compete and slaughter each other…
His coin balance had already risen from 445 to 1,401. Unlocking a hidden quest, as Orban had said, meant paying coins to stay longer in the current world—and even buying information that opened paths to power.
"No wonder that Yuki-Onna picked a fight…" Xiang Nan realized.
The dead player's world is less likely to invade Hunter × Hunter—so Nurarihyon-players are now unlikely to drop into Hunter × Hunter, and by killing one of them he earned Sin Value. Once he racks up enough kills from that world, he can invade it at will instead of waiting for a random matchup.
His expression grew serious.
He finally understood: in the Reincarnation Dimensions, information on the myriad worlds is vital. Invading blindly without knowing a target world's power system is suicide. Proper intel-gathering is essential before hostilities begin.
A glint flashed in his eyes. "Normal reincarnation is random pairing, but this… is targeted—two worlds squaring off. If I'd killed those two Basilisk players, earned more Sin Value, and stacked enough 'heads,' I could go to their world next."
"Brutal, really. A perfect example of the food chain."
Xiang Nan laughed. He also suspected there were more ways to invade than just randomness or open war.
"Execute."
With that thought, Xiang Nan confirmed the prompt.
[Ding! 700 Dimension Coins spent. Tourist mode unlocked: 10 days.]
[Ding! Hidden quest generated. Refresh?]
The hidden quest said that the South Town magnate Geese Howard's syndicate possessed several "Black Crystals" that could forcibly stimulate a fighter's body and mind, overdrawing potential for temporary power—like a berserker drug.
This King of Fighters tournament was Geese's field test, using the Team American Sports trio (Heavy D, Lucky, Brian) to gauge the crystals' effects.
"So it's tied to the current storyline… and it even marks the crystals' exact location."
Xiang Nan stared at the blinking red dot. Completing the quest would likely net him Black Crystals for his own use, but their nature didn't appeal to him.
"Refresh!"
He paid another 100 coins.
"Riot of the Blood?"
Seeing the new quest, his expression changed at once.
