Chapter 137: Protagonist Death x Goodbye
"Die."
A rare ripple stirred in Xiang Nan's heart.
He realised that if he killed Kusanagi Kyo—the protagonist of The King of Fighters—the boost to him as a player could be huge, even unimaginable.
A chance this irresistible was about to come true!
Boom!
He felt his fingertips pierce skin, but in the next instant a dazzling, searing flame exploded between them.
Scorching heat and agony erupted as tongues of fire rose like magma from a volcano, carrying the crushing reminder of how small humans are against the forces of nature.
In a blink, Xiang Nan was swallowed by the blaze. His whole body became a burning fireball and was hurled nearly ten metres. He smashed down hard, feet first.
Now he looked like a man of fire: hair, skin and clothes all ablaze. A vivid blister, shaped like a fist‑mark, blossomed on the arm he had raised to shield himself.
With icy eyes he stared at Kusanagi Kyo, striding forward through the drifting ashes.
Just moments ago Kyo had been drained and barely able to move, but now his entire bearing had changed. Panic and hesitation were gone, replaced by unshakable resolve. An orb of crimson fire burned in his open palm.
The ancient martial art of the Kusanagi clan—
At the critical moment Kyo had awakened and mastered his ultimate move: Orochi Nagi.
The flames and power it unleashed reached a terrifying realm, and Kyo's own strength seemed to leap to a whole new level in a mere instant.
According to the original plot, this move was meant for Rugal—but now Xiang Nan was the one to receive it.
Yet both the Orochi Nagi and Kyo's current state clearly differed from canon. The destructive force of the technique, and Kyo's overall combat power, far surpassed what he had shown when defeating Rugal.
"It's happening…"
Xiang Nan lowered his eyes. Even with a Nen barrier, the crimson flames still clung to him, refusing to die out.
He willed his mind to act. To stop Kyo from "powering up," he had wrapped himself in the high‑level Nen technique Ken—a form that drains Nen at a tremendous rate—yet it still couldn't withstand Kyo's onslaught.
While fighting the white‑haired woman from Nura: Rise of the Yokai Clan, Xiang Nan had noticed a key issue: energy interference across worlds.
Some energies are stronger, some weaker…
The ice element the white‑haired woman used was nowhere near as fearsome as Kyo's crimson fire, so countering it with Nen had been manageable. But the fire bursting from Kyo melted his Nen almost instantly, burning straight through to flesh and blood.
Still—
Xiang Nan forced his thoughts away from pain and looked at the advancing Kyo. Something about this King of Fighters hero was "off." He was far stronger than in the original story, and the look in his eyes was wrong—not the fury or battle lust a normal person would show, but the gaze of a sovereign looking down on ants, ready to judge.
Xiang Nan raised his injured arm, face blank.
His Nen pressure clearly no longer worked on this Kyo.
Nen ability—"Hands of Love"—activate!
He delivered his diagnosis to Kyo.
Although he had been blasted back and injured by Orochi Nagi, his own strike had landed. A gash on Kyo's neck spilled blood that soaked his collar.
"Whether it's the power of your Kusanagi ancestors, a primal instinct triggered by the shadow of death, or the main world's destiny meddling… the moment I saw you, your death was already decreed."
Xiang Nan spoke calmly.
As his words fell, Kyo suddenly halted. His expression did not change in the slightest—he simply stopped.
"…"
Xiang Nan remained silent.
His Nen ability had taken effect…but given how tangled KOF power systems and backstories are, he couldn't be absolutely sure it would kill Kyo. In KOF, as long as a fighter's soul power endures, even if the body dies the spirit may still attack. Nothing was guaranteed.
The air grew heavy.
Xiang Nan stared at the motionless Kyo, outwardly composed but inwardly taut. In a world this absurd, you prepare for every impossibility.
If his Nen failed and he had to keep fighting Kyo at this strength, Xiang Nan would have to go all out—risking his life. His Nen was already weakened against those crimson flames.
Puff!
After a moment and a soft sound, Kyo finally collapsed.
Xiang Nan's eyelid twitched. Only when the system's voice echoed in his mind did he exhale slowly, muscles loosening a fraction.
[System: Ding! Congratulations, player—important plot character eliminated. Current world completion: 27 %!]
[System: Ding! Your actions have disrupted the core storyline, causing undefined losses. All players in this world will be notified!]
[System: Ding! World completion exceeded 20 % and first‑kill achievement unlocked. Rewards granted.]
[System: Ding! …]
System notices flooded his head, but he had no time to read them.
Kyo's death had weakened the flames on his body, yet they had not gone out. Pain still gnawed at him.
He dashed to Kusanagi Saisyu—Kyo's father—and finished him off, eliminating another plot figure.
Almost simultaneously, every player in the King of Fighters world received the special announcement: Kusanagi Kyo is dead.
Though the notice didn't explain what it meant for future events or the Reincarnation Dimension, every player felt the same chill—this was a catastrophe that would affect them all.
The sky had fallen in the KOF world.
The story had barely begun, and disaster was already here.
"Bastard!"
Elsewhere, the King of Fighters player who'd first suspected Xiang Nan finally arrived, too late. The moment he entered the hall his predatory gaze locked on the executioner.
Seeing Rugal, Kyo and Saisyu lying motionless, he let out a howl. The weapon in his hands shifted like modular blocks and snapped together into an oversized, flamboyant cannon pointed straight at Xiang Nan. The muzzle glowed as it charged.
From Xiang Nan's arrival to his fight with Rugal and the killing of Kyo, his timing had been perfect—far faster than this player expected. Unsure what hidden quest Xiang Nan pursued, he had frantically checked every cabin to be sure nothing was amiss, losing precious minutes.
In his judgement, with Rugal, Kyo and others present, even if Xiang Nan's target was one of them, success should have been nearly impossible—certainly not this quick. The KOF world was facing large‑scale invasion for the first time; any intruders should be low‑level, not capable of such feats.
So when the system broadcast hit, he froze in disbelief.
Unacceptable! Their KOF world had only just started…
"I'll bury you with them!!!"
Roaring, the player's teeth ground. Meanwhile, Xiang Nan—his clothes burned away, flames finally extinguished—stood wreathed in wisps of blue smoke. He looked at the man calmly, then suddenly smiled. "Good‑bye."
Boom!
A blinding pillar of cannon‑light, as thick as a water barrel, ripped through the hall—but as it neared, the man wreathed in residual fire vanished, streaking away like pure light.
"AAAAAHHH!!!"
The King of Fighters player shrieked, hysterical and helpless.
