Hunter x Hunter: War of the Anime Worlds

Chapter 158: Guarding (VI)

We're finished… there really is a monster!

That identical thought flashed through Orban's and Pigeon's minds at the same moment.

Another psycho just like Xiang Nan.

Satotz is a One‑Star Hunter recognized by the Hunter Association; even among major canon characters his strength is something ordinary players would never dare compare themselves to.

Remember, players only gain the right to spar with top‑tier story characters after they have cleared ten rounds of the "Extinction Game," and a right is no guarantee of victory.

Even if Orban and Pigeon fought together, they still couldn't say with confidence that they could kill Satotz.

They certainly didn't dare compare themselves with Xiang Nan. After Xiang Nan dragged them into his extermination squad the two of them learned his real name—and this is only the first placement match. The Hunter storyline has barely begun, so any players that have descended can only be true rookies.

Along the way Orban and Pigeon had already eliminated quite a few intruders. Some looked troublesome—vampires, werewolves, or people carrying high‑tech weapons with terrifying damage—but overall this batch of invaders was still within expectations.

They had been thinking: sure, a "monster rookie" like Xiang Nan might exist, but the odds of running into one right away were astronomically low.

And yet…here one was.

"What do we do?"

Orban's hand slipped quietly to his sword hilt and he whispered the question.

Judging by the aura of these two newcomers, they were out of their depth; Satotz was dead, so what chance did the two of them have? Should they retreat—run for it?

Xiang Nan had told them plainly: if they ran into players who broke common sense, they were to put their own safety first.

On the opposite side, the two magicians saw Orban and Pigeon appear full of murderous intent only to "stall out" and hesitate. Smirks appeared on their faces.

"What's wrong? Not going to make a move on us?"

The chain‑wielding player taunted.

Orban said nothing.

"The system's already told us the mission's complete," the chain mage continued in a conversational tone, "but we have a bit of time before it ends. How about we kill them, collect some Sin Value and Dimensional Coins? They look like high‑level natives; could be worth something."

"Since they've seen our faces, we might as well," the red‑haired man replied. "If they run into us again in a future quest they'll recognize us anyway."

"Sorry, looks like you two are going to die here," the chain‑user grinned at Orban and Pigeon.

Smack!

Even before the words were cold, Orban and Pigeon wheeled around in perfect unison and bolted at top speed—self‑preservation first!

"Hahaha!"

The chain‑user burst out laughing at their panicked flight, then swung onto a broomstick with his partner and gave chase. From a safe distance he cast magic; ethereal chains erupted in mid‑air, targeting the slower, black‑robed Pigeon.

"Tch!"

Sensing danger, Pigeon glanced back—an iron chain was bursting from nothingness straight at him—and cursed aloud.

Meanwhile …

Xiang Nan had just hung up with Beishi and Manman and grasped the current situation. After wiping out a group of vampires, he'd immediately cleared several other intruders nearby. Farther across the battlefield Hisoka was at work, and the number of invaders was dropping fast; Xiang Nan guessed Illumi and some Hunters cooperating with the police were also active.

The city center, a mere five‑kilometer zone, was more or less under control. The police response had been quick, and because the players had started fighting among themselves their locations were exposed and easy to pin down.

Most of the stronger outsiders had already been tied up in fights; once the battlefield was sealed they wouldn't escape easily. The real headache would be the ones who had never shown themselves—those lurking silently since the start.

Beishi had spotted a trio doing exactly that—two men and a woman—and asked Xiang Nan for backup. Counting his own kills, Beishi's, and Manman's, they had taken out just over twenty intruders, about one‑fifth of the total. Add the ones shot by police, those killed by other players, plus Hisoka and Illumi, and there couldn't be many left—maybe enough to count on one hand.

Xiang Nan bounded from rooftop to rooftop toward the coordinates Beishi had sent.

"Hmm?"

A distant crash reached his ears—someone was still fighting. The city center had fallen quiet, most skirmishes already burned out. Xiang Nan curled his fingers before his eyes like a telescope.

"That aura…Pigeon."

His eyes narrowed and he changed direction, racing toward the noise.

They had run barely two minutes before a chain punched through Pigeon's shoulder. He screamed as more chains wrapped him like a cocoon and hoisted him into the air. The enemy's magic let them attack from range, keeping a safe distance so Pigeon had no chance to bring his grudge‑energy techniques to bear.

Orban had been a shade faster, yet a field of light‑magic mirrors disoriented him. He was in the same predicament Satotz had faced. He ducked and parried, sword flashing to sever incoming chains, but they moved like extensions of the mage's own limbs—swift, heavy, relentless. He could defend for a while, but the drain on stamina and Nen was obvious; sooner or later he'd fall.

It's over, thought Pigeon, his heart turning to ice.

"Interesting…your aura feels different from Satotz's. Are you also a On user?" The chain‑wielder, riding his broom, could casually talk while harassing Orban with magic.

"Relax. I've decided not to kill you right away. If you can create value for our world, I don't mind letting you two crawl on in Hunter x Hunter World a little longer—provided you help us unlock this storyline and harvest its resources."

"What world are you from?" Pigeon rasped. The enemy clearly respected the danger of his grudge power; though they had captured him, they kept him suspended at a cautious distance.

"Isn't it obvious?" The mage laughed. "You Hunters really gather pathetic intel on the multiverse. I'm literally riding a broom—what does that tell you?"

He sighed in mock disappointment.

"Black Clover. Ever heard of it? We're from the Diamond Kingdom."

Pigeon fell silent.

The red‑haired mage activated light magic. The rainbow‑hued prison vanished, replaced by seven or eight mirrors hovering around Orban, including above his head. A beam of light shot from one mirror, ricocheted erratically between them, accelerating each time until—thud!—it punched through Orban's ankle, spraying blood. Chains seized the opening, binding him like Pigeon; even his dropped blade clattered to the ground.

Satisfied, the two mages descended.

"This is the calibre they send to intercept invaders? Colour me impressed," the chain mage sneered. With a tug of his finger the chains constricted, crushing flesh and bone; agony twisted the captives' faces.

"So, think over my offer. Become our Diamond Kingdom's insiders here in Hunter x Hunter World and I'll spare you. When Hunter becomes our farming world you'll enjoy privileges far beyond native players."

Pigeon kept his mouth shut. Orban met his eyes, clenched his teeth, and squeezed out a reply.

"What do you mean…be your insider?"

"Clearly you guys aren't the highest‑rank hunters if you don't even know about this stuff," the chain mage sighed, then gave the briefest explanation: every world has different rules, players fight for their own nations back home, and Hunter x Hunter was destined not to become Black Clover's vassal dimension but the property of the Diamond Kingdom. Their undercover operation was just one experiment in the Reincarnation Dimension game.

"Now—answer me!"

His patience thinning, his voice turned frosty.

"…Fine," Orban said after a moment's hesitation. With his life in their hands, lofty ideals meant nothing.

Pigeon looked at him, words sticking in his throat.

"Smart people live longer," the chain‑user said approvingly. "Your world's top‑rank players didn't dare show themselves so they shoved trash like you forward—pathetic. Frankly, Hunter's power scale is nowhere near Black Clover's; becoming our livestock is a blessing for you."

"But don't try any tricks. If you bow now and stab me later, I will come back here and hunt you down."

The two Black Clover players radiated absolute confidence. The chain mage stared at Pigeon and Orban as if they were moths.

"Oh? Is that so?"

Before the captives could answer, an unfamiliar voice sounded behind the invaders. Both mages froze, pupils shrinking as if they had plunged into an ice bath.

Someone? How had anyone approached them? Why hadn't their mana‑sense alerted them? When?

They tried to flare their mana, but Xiang Nan's arm flicked out—two massive heads arced through the air. He never gave them a chance.

A spray of blood filled the sky.

Xiang Nan, black coat fluttering, expressionless, murmured:

"Such a powerful world… I'm sincerely looking forward to your invasion."

Above him the two heads spun, the expressions of these Black Clover elites forever frozen in disbelief. They had planned to make a glorious debut in this placement match.

And yet, in the blink of an eye, everything was over—absurdly, abruptly, over.
