I accidentally married to a Mafia

Chapter 4: The Message

Lena didn't even realize when her hand moved. It was instinct—pure survival. She grasped Alexander's hand, and in one effortless motion, he pulled her up.

Her body trembled as she steadied herself, her heart still hammering from the near accident. But as she looked around, her breath caught in her throat.

Lined up on the road, blocking every lane of traffic, were rows of black SUVs, their tinted windows reflecting the city lights. Men in black suits stood like statues, their eyes hidden behind dark glasses, exuding an air of quiet menace. They were everywhere—on the sidewalks, near the cars, standing guard like shadows of death.

A chill ran down Lena's spine.

This… this wasn't normal.

Her gaze snapped back to Alexander, who stood before her—silent, unmoving, his storm-gray eyes locked onto her.

Cold. Indifferent. Possessive.

He didn't ask if she was okay. He didn't offer a word of comfort.

He just… stared.

The weight of his gaze felt suffocating, as if he was peeling back her defenses layer by layer, seeing things she didn't want him to see.

Lena swallowed hard, her body screaming at her to run, but her legs refused to move.

Was this a warning? A display of power?

The realization hit her like a punch—she had just crossed a line she shouldn't have.

Alexander said nothing. He simply turned and walked away, his guards parting for him like shadows shifting with the wind.

Lena stood frozen, her fingers still tingling from where he had touched her.

She should have felt relieved that he left. She should have breathed.

But all she could feel was terror.

The deafening honks of impatient drivers, the screeching of tires against asphalt—everything hit her all at once.

The moment his guards stepped aside, the line of black SUVs sped past her, their glossy exteriors reflecting the streetlights as they disappeared into the distance. The sheer force of the wind they created made Lena stagger back.

Her heart pounded in her chest as she watched them vanish, as if they had never been there in the first place. Like ghosts.

She sucked in a shaky breath, but the feeling of his presence still clung to her skin.

What just happened?

One second, she was cursing his name, ready to burn the world down. The next, she was inches from being run over, only to be pulled back by the very man she despised.

The very man who now controlled her life.

Her fingers curled into fists, her nails digging into her palms.

This wasn't over. Not by a long shot.

Lena's phone buzzed in her hand. She glanced down, her heart skipping a beat as she saw the sender's name.

Mom: Come home quickly.

Her fingers tightened around the device. A deep sense of unease settled in her chest.

Her mother. The only person who had ever truly been there for her.

Memories flooded her mind—the hungry nights when no one cared, but she did. The times Lena had been shivering in the cold, and she had wrapped her in warmth. The day her own father had lifted his hand to strike her, and she had stepped in, shielding her with her own body. Lena's mother wasn't the woman who had given birth to her—she was the one who had saved her.

And now... Lena couldn't even do anything for her.

A sharp pain twisted inside her.

With shaky hands, she dialed her mother's number.

"Mom? What's wrong?"

"Lena, are you okay?" Her mother's voice was soft but full of worry.

Lena swallowed hard. Even now, she was only worried about her.

"I'm fine. But what about you? Are you feeling worse?"

A brief pause.

"It's nothing, sweetheart. Just come home soon."

Lena's grip on the phone tightened. The weight of helplessness settled over her like a heavy storm cloud.

"I'll be there soon," she promised, her voice barely above a whisper.

Without another moment's hesitation, she turned around and rushed toward home.

Lena stepped inside the house, her heart still heavy from the day's events. As soon as she entered, she saw her mother sitting on the couch, a weak yet warm smile on her face.

"You're finally home," her mother said gently.

Lena quickly walked over and sat beside her, taking her frail hands in hers. "Are you feeling okay? Did you eat anything?"

Her mother nodded. "I was just waiting for you."

Guilt washed over Lena. Even in her illness, her mother worried about her more than herself.

"You don't have to wait for me, Mom," Lena said softly. "You need to take care of yourself."

Her mother squeezed her hand. "I will, don't worry. You look tired, sweetheart. Go rest for a while."

Lena hesitated, but exhaustion was creeping in. After making sure her mother was comfortable, she finally made her way to her room.

As soon as she shut the door behind her, she let out a deep breath. The moment she lay down on her bed, the face of the man she had seen today flashed before her eyes.

Alexander Cain.

Her so-called husband. How was this even possible?

She had seen him today—stood face-to-face with the man the world feared. Yet, she had said nothing. She had been too stunned, too overwhelmed.

Could this be a mistake?

Maybe there was some kind of misunderstanding. Maybe she wasn't really married to him.

But… then why had he come for her?

And why was an ultra-rich, dangerously powerful man like him even a part of her life?

Her fingers clenched the bedsheet as an unsettling realization hit her.

Whatever the truth was… she wasn't ready for it.

Lena had just closed her eyes, exhaustion weighing down on her body like a heavy blanket.

But then—her phone buzzed.

She groaned softly, debating whether to ignore it. Her body begged for rest, but something told her she needed to check.

With a sigh, she reached for her phone. It was a message from Ryan.

Ryan: "Lena, you need to see this."

Below his message was a link.

Curiosity and a strange sense of unease prickled at her skin as she tapped on it. The moment the webpage loaded, her breath caught in her throat. Her vision blurred for a second as she stared at the screen in shock.

There it was. A news article. And right in the center of it— a picture of her.

With Alexander Cain.

Her heart slammed against her ribs.

The headline burned into her mind.

"Business Tycoon Alexander Cain's Secret Marriage Revealed—Meet His Wife, Lena Carter."

Her pulse roared in her ears as her trembling fingers scrolled down. They called her his wife. They had pictures of them together.

But how?

When did this happen?!
