"Cough, cough, cough..." The chief elder clutched his chest, his aged body heaving with labored breaths like a bellows.
"Elder Brother!" The fourth elder rushed to support him, glaring at Tokuma. "Tokuma! We've always treated you well, and yet you betray us like this!"
The second elder, meanwhile, stood silently beside the unconscious Hiashi, supporting him.
No one moved.
The elders understood that in the current situation, any attempt to resist would be futile.
Tokuma ignored the fourth elder and turned his attention toward the darkened room in the distance.
"Lady Hinata," he called out loudly, "Lady Hanabi must be with you as well, correct?"
The door creaked open, and a trembling maid peeked out.
"W-What are you trying to do? Both young ladies are already asleep."
Tokuma pointed to two jonin among the gathered crowd. "Ippei, Teppei, ensure the safety of the two young ladies. Let no one take advantage of the situation."
Hyuga Ippei and Hyuga Teppei stepped forward silently, taking up positions on either side of Hinata's room.
Raising his voice again, Tokuma declared, "Young ladies, you have nothing to fear. No one will harm you."
"Then, what about my father?"
The door suddenly swung open, and Hanabi stepped out boldly.
"Hanabi!" Hinata followed her out, her face full of worry as she placed herself protectively in front of her younger sister.
"Lady Hinata, Lady Hanabi!" The maid's voice quivered as she glanced at the stoic Ippei and Teppei stationed at the door. "Please, go back inside quickly..."
"Hinata, Ryouko, step aside."
Hanabi slipped between Hinata and the maid, standing barefoot on the corridor floor.
Her steady gaze swept across the courtyard and its gathered members before settling on Tokuma.
"Uncle Tokuma," she said in a composed tone, "you wouldn't do anything to harm my father, would you?"
"Of course not." Tokuma looked at the calm Hanabi with a trace of admiration. "You have my word, Lady Hanabi. As Homura said, we will not harm any of our kin."
"Then I'm relieved."
Hanabi suddenly broke into a sly smile. "I know what you're after, but if your plan is only to confine my sister and me, isn't that a waste of my potential?"
"What do you mean by that, Lady Hanabi?" Tokuma asked, his expression uncertain.
"Let me be direct." Hanabi placed her hands on her hips, her face brimming with confidence. "With my father indisposed, why don't I, as the heir, lend you a hand?"
She turned to glance at the stunned Hinata behind her.
"After all, I'm not a fan of the Caged Bird Seal either."
"Hanabi…" Hinata's voice trembled, her eyes welling with tears as she wrapped her arms around her younger sister. "No, you're too young. Don't get involved in this!"
Don't take risks for a useless older sister like me.
"Lady Hanabi!!"
The three elders looked at the small girl in Hinata's arms, visibly pained.
The courtyard fell silent as every eye turned toward Hanabi in shock.
Tokuma, equally stunned, collected himself and signaled to Homura and Iroha. "Let the clan head and the elders rest for now."
Homura nodded, gesturing to Iroha.
Iroha and a few others stepped forward, surrounding the three elders.
"Chief Elder, Second Elder, Fourth Elder," Iroha said with a respectful tone, "please come with us along with the clan head."
"Cough... This is treason! TREASON!!"
The chief elder pounded his chest, tears streaming down his face. "You fools! Are you trying to destroy the Hyuga clan?!"
"Lady Hanabi is still a child! Who has corrupted her?!"
His trembling gaze turned accusingly toward Hinata, and the other two elders followed suit.
"Lady Hinata!" The fourth elder rebuked. "How could you selfishly lead Lady Hanabi astray?!"
"I… I didn't!"
Under the piercing stares of the elders, Hinata turned pale, trembling uncontrollably.
"Stop it!" Hanabi turned to glare at the elders. "This has nothing to do with my sister. These are my own thoughts!"
Tokuma gave Iroha another look, and Iroha swiftly struck, tapping precise points on the three elders.
"Let the elders rest." Iroha motioned to the others as the unconscious elders were carried away along with Hiashi.
Hanabi gently patted Hinata's arm, freeing herself from her sister's embrace. She watched calmly as her father and the elders were escorted away.
"Uncle Tokuma, Uncle Homura, Uncle Iroha," she said with a mischievous smile. "With my support as the heir, won't your actions carry more legitimacy?"
Tokuma gazed at the eleven-year-old Hanabi, recognizing the seriousness in her eyes.
He walked to the corridor and knelt before her respectfully.
"Lady Hanabi," he said earnestly, "may you lead the Hyuga clan to a brighter future."
"Lady Hanabi."
Everyone in the courtyard turned and knelt in her direction.
Hanabi's smile widened as she clasped her hands behind her back.
"I'll do my best!"
Under the cold winter moonlight, the eleven-year-old girl stood at the forefront of the Hyuga clan.
From a rooftop near the Hyuga compound, a group of slightly intoxicated men watched the scene unfold.
"So, this is the Hyuga clan," Shikaku murmured. "They rebel against tradition, yet remain bound by it."
"That little girl…" Inoichi's gaze softened as he observed Hanabi, who was younger than his own daughter. "Can someone that young really bear the weight of an entire clan?"
"She's a kind child," Choza said, patting his rounded belly. "And this is her choice. Besides, the clan seems ready to support her."
"That child is indeed more suited to lead the Hyuga clan than Hinata," Asuma commented, shaking his head as he reflected on his student's demeanor. "Hinata is too soft-hearted."
"Ha…" Kakashi yawned. "This is their family matter. Let's head back and get some sleep."
"Let's go." Shikaku glanced toward another rooftop. "It seems there's no need for us to inform the Hokage."
"Yeah, yeah," Kakashi said, turning away. "And don't think the Hyuga clan hasn't noticed us."
"Ha…" Inoichi chuckled nervously. "I hope they'll forgive a few drunkards."
The group leapt off the roof and walked down the deserted street, arms around each other's shoulders.
"Shikaku probably won't get into his house tonight…"
"Your wife won't let you in either…"
"Ha ha ha, maybe I'll crash at your place."
Their laughter faded into the night as Aburame Shibi, still standing alone on the rooftop, let out a cold snort before heading home with an air of irritation.
