Mount Ōeyama, Ancient Forest.
Once again, the leaders of the youkai gathered beneath the vast shade of Shigeru's towering true form.
"Come, drink!"
Seated on the ground, they raised their sake cups and downed the contents in unison.
Shigeru refilled their cups, his deeply lined face wearing a benevolent smile. "My friends, the war we have awaited for a thousand years is finally upon us. Once more, this old man wishes you all… glorious fortune in battle!"
"Hoorah!!"
"Glorious fortune in battle!!"
They drank again, their voices ringing through the forest.
Meanwhile, Uchiha Kaito's paper clone sat apart from the revelry, unable to partake in the drinking.
He had originally wanted to sit beside Yūrei, but she had mercilessly shooed him away.
Ever since an incident where he had angered her, Yūrei had treated his paper clone with outright disdain—a stark contrast to her attitude toward his true self.
'Sigh… It's still me, just a different form. Why the discrimination?'
Propping his chin on his hand, Kaito sulked as he stared at Yūrei's back.
As if sensing his gaze, she turned her head and shot him a cold glance before resuming her cheerful banter with Kiei.
"I've been waiting for this day… for so long."
After several cups of sake, Kamaitachi Santarou's eyes reddened.
"Kaito!" He suddenly turned toward the paper clone.
"Here." Kaito raised his left hand in response.
"You… you tell me!" Santarou stood up, his face flushed as he staggered toward Kaito.
"What's wrong, Santarou?"
Kaito quickly reached out to steady him, taking the opportunity to rub the soft, furry ears on his head.
"Tell me…" Santarou looked up at him with watery eyes. "We're definitely going to defeat Kaguya, right?"
"Yes." Kaito smiled, ruffling his hair.
"H-hey! What are you doing?!" Santarou smacked his hand away, puffing up in anger. "I… I'm your elder!"
"Right, right." Kaito humored him but couldn't resist giving his head another affectionate pat.
Who could blame him? The guy looked like a four- or five-year-old kid—adorable.
"Hic!"
Santarou hiccuped, then dissolved into a gust of wind, reappearing at the banquet and collapsing onto Yuuta's plush belly.
"Tell me!" He pointed accusingly at Kaito from across the gathering. "Are the legends of the Kamaitachi brothers popular among humans? Hic… Can my big brothers still be revived?"
"That day will come eventually." Kaito's voice was gentle.
"Hic… Waaah…" Santarou suddenly burst into loud, drunken sobs. "Liar… hic… Their… their youki flames haven't even been reignited yet…"
His crying intensified until he reverted to his true form—a small, furry ball curled up pitifully.
"It's alright, it's alright." Yuuta quickly scooped him up, soothing him with gentle pats.
Kiei suddenly shot Kaito a sidelong glance, her crimson lips parting. "Ah, speaking of which, lately, it's been this one alone guarding the castle tower. Certain people haven't shown up in ages."
"Ah, well, Kaito's been busy outside lately," Yūrei quickly interjected, shielding Kaito from Kiei's glare. "Don't complain so much!"
Kiei poked Yūrei's forehead with a slender finger. "Hmph! Spineless!"
Kaito raised his hands defensively. "No need to worry, Lady Kiei. Though I haven't visited in a while, I'm fully aware of the situation."
"Then enlighten us," Kiei said, pushing Yūrei aside. "From what this one has observed, those fools haven't made any progress at all!"
The moment Kiei brought up the topic, the atmosphere shifted.
The Resurrection Plan was of paramount importance to the youkai—after all, the revival of the great youkai meant the restoration of Mount Ōeyama's full strength.
"It seems everyone is concerned."
Kaito smirked mysteriously, letting the anticipation build before finally explaining under their impatient gazes.
"Rest assured, we are still in the stage of accumulating power. It's simply that the critical point hasn't been reached yet."
Onikiri cut straight to the point. "Explain."
"It means the plan is nearing success," Kaito said, still enigmatic. "In fact, this war might serve as a crucial catalyst."
Kiei's eyes narrowed dangerously. "Ara~ This one doesn't understand~"
"That's because you're slow," Yūrei muttered under her breath.
"Hmm?" Kiei turned to her with a dangerously sweet smile.
Yūrei quickly averted her gaze, pretending to sip her sake with exaggerated elegance.
"Still don't get it?" Kaito pondered for a moment. "Then let me put it this way—the vessel is nearly full. And in this war, I will do everything in my power to ensure the plan's completion."
"So then…" A vein pulsed on Kiei's forehead. "Could you kindly explain what exactly this 'catalyst' is, and what the plan entails?"
"No need to rush."
Kaito smoothed his sleeves.
"It's not yet time for a full explanation."
"Unbelievable!"
Kiei turned away in frustration, downing another cup of sake in one gulp.
Still unsatisfied, she spun back and spat a web of spider silk straight at Kaito.
"Oh my, no need for violence." With a flick of his finger, a shimmering talisman sliced the web in two, sending the strands fluttering to the ground.
"Hmph." Kiei lost all interest in further conversation.
Shigeru, watching the exchange, simply chuckled. "Kaito, as long as you have a firm grasp on the situation, this old man trusts in your abilities."
"I appreciate your faith, Lord Shigeru." Kaito bowed slightly.
"Come, come!" Yuuta raised his cup again. "Let's have another round!"
"Cheers!!"
Once more, the cups were emptied.
"Ah, right." Kaito turned to the silent Higanbana. "Lady Kaori."
Kaori tilted her head slightly, her cool eyes questioning.
"I've successfully contracted with Enma Daiō and the Court of Judgment," Kaito said. "Once this war concludes, the Land of Yomi can be rebuilt."
"Thank you, Kaito." Kaori's lips curved into a faint, almost imperceptible smile.
"Kaori…" Yūrei wrapped her arms around Kaori's, pressing her cheek against the other woman's shoulder. "If Yomi is restored… will you leave Mount Ōeyama?"
Kaori nodded. "Yūrei, I am the Higanbana of Yomi. That is my home."
"I know… I just don't want you to go." Yūrei nuzzled against her.
Kaito interjected, "As a youkai, you can visit Yomi, Yūrei."
"W-who said I wanted to?!" Yūrei immediately bristled. "This lady is a butterfly of Mount Ōeyama!"
Seeing her resistance, Kaito quickly backtracked. "Of course, it's entirely up to you."
Yet for some reason, Yūrei seemed even angrier.
Shrugging it off, Kaito blinked and moved to sit beside Onikiri, discussing the finer details of the war.
The youkai would be participating in the battle, with Onikiri—the strongest warrior among them—leading the combat units. Having once been a warrior's blade, he was well-versed in strategy and command.
The banquet lasted well into the night before the group finally dispersed, thoroughly sated.
On the way back, Yūrei followed silently behind Kaito.
No matter how much he tried to engage her in conversation, she refused to respond—yet she maintained a steady distance, trailing him all the way to the Uchiha residence.
"Coming in?" Kaito pushed open the gate.
"Hmph." Yūrei sniffed haughtily and strode past him.
Amused, Kaito shook his head and followed, closing the gate behind them.
"What's this about?" As he walked, a faint golden mist began to swirl around him.
Yūrei slipped off her sandals, stepping barefoot onto the engawa before turning to look down at him.
"Ah, I see."
Kaito clasped his hands together.
"I'll summon my real self right away."
"Mmm." Yūrei nodded, a small, satisfied smile gracing her lips.
