Chapter 11 - The Legendary Goblin Race
The time to burst open the questions that had been dammed up until now.
As that time arrived, I poured out all sorts of curiosities and questions to her as soon as Yeon-ah finished saying she would answer any question to the best of her ability.
And it wasn’t a lie that she was the head of the General Management Team that held the entire city in her hands, as Yeon-ah gave perfectly clean answers to each question I asked.
Thus, the time of questions and answers continued, with me asking and Yeon-ah answering.
The questions that had piled up due to my ignorance as a different race that had crossed over to this world in the past and the changes over 70 years endlessly extended that time, and so after a very long question and answer session… After 3 hours of consumption, I was finally able to get answers to all my curiosities.
“…I see, I understand everything now. It really has changed completely from the world I remember.”
Information about this place called the defense city, the coexistence of surviving different races and humans, the five forces controlling the defense city, the exact existence of gates and hunters… and finally.
The event called the ‘Gate Rampage’ from 70 years ago, which was the identity of the blue light that day and a great calamity.
Of course, I learned countless other minor pieces of information besides these, but if I were to extract only the important ones, they could be summarized like this.
It was truly a time when I could cram everything I didn’t know into my head.
Although it was confusing to have so much information enter my head at once, it was better than not knowing anything, so I just slowly sorted the new information in my head.
“It really has changed completely… If I had tried to investigate this information on my own, it probably would have taken years.”
“…Thank you for the praise.”
At my sincere words, Yeon-ah bowed her head, her mouth twitching as if embarrassed.
I almost burst into laughter at her appearance, which seemed about to jump for joy at receiving just one word of praise, but I swallowed my laugh with effort, as it seemed like it might poke at an embarrassing part if I did.
And instead, what I did was spin Hwa-gon in my hand and fall into thought.
It was an inevitable time of contemplation that had to be spent, as even I couldn’t instantly organize all the information I had just obtained.
“Um… ancestor?”
“Hm? What is it?”
However, before I could even organize half of the information I had obtained, I raised my head again at Yeon-ah’s voice calling me.
Yeon-ah, who had only been answering my questions until now, had an expression as if she had a question of her own this time.
At that, I stopped spinning Hwa-gon, and perhaps interpreting that action as meaning to speak, Yeon-ah opened her mouth with a slightly nervous expression.
“If you have no more questions, would it be alright if I… asked a few questions as well?”
“Hm? Of course. Although it’s vexing that you arbitrarily took my genes while I was sealed… You’ve protected me until now with that power and even said you’d be my sponsor, right? You can ask as many questions as you want.”
“A-ahem! I truly feel sorry about that part… And thank you for giving me the opportunity to ask questions.”
Yeon-ah broke out in a cold sweat and coughed at my slightly thorny words, but although I said it like this, I didn’t view Yeon-ah and her family too negatively.
I had already heard everything her family had done for me from her words.
I also learned the reason why the scent of our goblin race, which was said to have already gone extinct, emanated from Yeon-ah was related to this.
Yeon-ah’s family, who had taken genes from me while I was sealed in amber and used them as their own power.
Although that fact was certainly vexing, they said they would use the highest position, wealth, and power in this defense city, the ‘General Management Team’ that they had built up using my power, solely for me, so this was rather something I should be grateful for.
I thought I would undoubtedly start from nothing after waking up in an unfamiliar future, but thanks to Yeon-ah’s family, I was able to gain such benefits.
‘Moreover, she didn’t think about lying at all and told me only the truth from the beginning.’
『And with that, we also confirmed that she is offering us clear loyalty.』
Moreover, when telling me these facts, Yeon-ah showed no signs of lying and only told me the truth, and because of that, my and Hwa-gon’s trust in Yeon-ah deepened even more.
Anyway, Hwa-gon and I judged that Yeon-ah and her family were undoubtedly trustworthy.
So I could answer as many questions as she wanted.
And Yeon-ah, having received the opportunity to ask questions from me, cleared her throat a few more times and then asked me with a very serious face.
“May I dare to ask… what your race is, ancestor?”
It was quite an unexpected question.
“…My race?”
At this truly unexpected question, I made a dumbfounded expression for a moment and then tilted my head.
“Didn’t you already know my race?”
I thought it was information she would have known long ago if she was so devoted to me, so why didn’t she know?
With such an expression and question, I looked at Yeon-ah, and at my gaze, she bowed her head as if embarrassed.
“Well… embarrassingly, we couldn’t find any information matching your genes… It seems it was lost in the city war I mentioned, so we still don’t know any proper information about you, ancestor.”
“Ah, the city war…?”
If that was the case, it made sense.
The ‘City War’ waged by humans who had once joined hands with a different race.
Although not as much as during the Gate Rampage, this City War had caused a tremendous impact on the interior of the defense city, and the amount of past information lost due to this was said to be innumerable.
And Yeon-ah had said that the government, which had already half-collapsed due to the Gate Rampage, completely fell at this time, and from then on, the five forces completely took control of the power in the defense city.
The currently living different races were their own past and living witnesses, so their information remained, but it wouldn’t be strange if the information about our goblin race, which was said to have already gone extinct, was lost in the city war.
Therefore, I nodded briefly, understanding Yeon-ah’s words.
And immediately after. As I couldn’t find any reason to hide the truth, I looked into Yeon-ah’s eyes and gave her the answer to her question right away.
“I’m of the goblin race. Do you know of it?”
“The goblin race… you say?”
Yeon-ah muttered the name of the race I mentioned in a low voice.
I didn’t expect her to know right away since information about the goblin race was lost, but seeing Yeon-ah’s dazed expression, I couldn’t hide my deflated feeling.
Although I deeply disliked the goblin race myself, it seems I had some pride in it, knowingly or unknowingly.
Therefore, I let out a small sigh, deciding that I would have to explain what the goblin race was from the beginning.
It didn’t even take 10 seconds to realize that this thought of mine was wrong.
“The goblin race?! Is that true, ancestor?!”
“Wh-what? Why suddenly?”
“Are you really asking because you don’t know?! Ah, of course, you wouldn’t know since you’ve been asleep for 70 years. I’m sorry!”
Yeon-ah suddenly slammed the table and stood up, starting to shout with a dramatically raised tension.
Judging by her expression, although she seemed to be thinking that she should calm down, her body was acting on its own.
I couldn’t understand why she was reacting like this.
And I was able to know the answer to that question from Yeon-ah’s shout the next moment.
“If you say the goblin race, that’s truly a legend of the defense city, ancestor!! Just as America has the vampire race and China has the jiangshi race, in our Korea, the goblin race remains as a legend!”
Yeon-ah shouted with an excited voice, like a child who had seen their admired cartoon hero in real life.
Then, as I listened to Yeon-ah rattling off the reason why the goblin race remained a legend, even though I hadn’t asked, I felt my own mind becoming distant this time.
On the day when the Gate Rampage broke out, although the government gathered survivors from across the country in one place, originally not even 10% of the survivors would have gathered at this place where the defense city was built.
This was because monsters were literally swarming and overflowing throughout the country on the way here.
The probability of ordinary people without abilities, children, or the elderly and weak reaching this place was literally converging to 0.
However, the reason why over 80% of survivors and different races were able to gather here without losing their lives was one.
It was thanks to the goblin race who came out from Mount Seorak where they lived and protected humans… and incinerated their lives to exterminate the monsters that were like an ocean.
“Although the goblins numbered less than 200, compared to the tens of millions of monsters that overflowed due to the Gate Rampage, the end was the extinction of the goblin race…”
Although all of the goblin race ultimately lost their lives at the end, they managed to block the monsters that were enough to densely fill the earth with their power alone, paving the way for survivors to gather.
There were countless different races that fought during the Gate Rampage incident, but was there any race that saved everyone while sacrificing their own lives like this!
It was no exaggeration to say that the foundation of the current defense city was entirely created by the goblin race.
This was why the goblin race remained an unforgotten legend until now, and why Yeon-ah was so excited.
“Apart from being large in size and wearing masks, the goblins had an appearance almost indistinguishable from humans, so I couldn’t recognize it, but you were of the goblin race, ancestor! If that’s the case, I can understand such strong power!”
“Uh…”
『Well, this is…』
I answered Yeon-ah awkwardly while listening to her words, which still showed clear signs of excitement although she had calmed down a lot.
After all, I was a mutant who extremely hated my own race, so how could I answer normally after hearing such words?
The deeds committed by the goblin race of the past, whom I had wished desperately to die, seemed to have been quite remarkable.
I couldn’t help but form a twisted smile.
