Chapter 5 - First Class (1)
First Class (1)
“So this is the dormitory.”
The dormitory wasn’t anything special, just like in the game.
You could say it was just a slightly upscale officetel?
While the interior would be quite spacious for single occupancy, most rooms would probably feel cramped within days as students acquire more belongings.
Right now, the room feels empty with only the basic items provided by the Academy, but that won’t last long. When living alone, isn’t it natural for a home to become cluttered and cramped over time?
Especially since we’re supposed to be curious 20-year-olds right now.
‘Though I won’t have much to buy.’
I’m not particularly materialistic anyway.
Even if I do buy things, they won’t be leisure items taking up space, but rather elixirs and items to invest in for the future.
“This is quite interesting when you actually use it.”
I activated the black smartwatch provided by the Academy.
Whirr.
A hologram appeared in mid-air upon activation.
It was cutting-edge technology rarely seen in reality.
It had various functions, including communication and a linked bank account that could be used instead of a card, and you could also record monster data and take notes.
By the way, the account linked to the smartwatch had a much larger amount than I had expected, enough that I wouldn’t have to worry about money.
“Let’s do some organizing.”
I took out the notebook and writing supplies from the room.
These were also among the items provided by the Academy along with the smartwatch.
Now I plan to write down the game’s story that I remember, character traits, various artifacts’ locations, and how to obtain them.
“I should get this around this time, and leave that alone since it’s not time for it yet.”
I would have preferred to write everything conveniently in the smartwatch, but unfortunately, there were some individuals skilled in machines and hacking, so I had to write in the notebook to minimize information exposure.
Scratch. Scratch.
One side of the pristine notebook gradually fills with black letters and drawings.
The handwriting wasn’t particularly pretty since I was more used to typing on a phone than writing in books, but it was still legible, so well.
‘It doesn’t matter since I’m the only one who’ll see it anyway.’
As I wrote in the notebook, checking here and there to make sure I hadn’t missed any information, evening had fallen, and I had filled nearly half the notebook.
“Whew, this must be everything I remember.”
I massaged my arm a few times – though it didn’t particularly hurt thanks to my real stats – and reviewed what I had written.
The basic main story and ending.
And the artifacts that appear in or after the main story.
I paid particular attention to the artifacts section.
“I have quite a lot to collect.”
Since the main story is called a tutorial, there are quite a lot of uncovered artifacts.
Especially considering the ones added through updates, I could significantly lower the difficulty.
“I need to get this one first.”
Among these artifacts, the one I need to prioritize.
An artifact that can only be obtained at the Academy, and only during the first year.
Growl.
“…But what about food?”
I’m hungry after being focused on the notebook since arriving at the dormitory.
In the game, you didn’t really get hungry, so you didn’t need to eat anything.
Occasionally you’d eat simple things like bread to fill the satiety meter, but since the sensations weren’t implemented as vividly as reality, you’d just make do with cheap, tasteless items that filled you up.
But here, where I could actually taste and feel hunger, my taste buds wouldn’t allow such methods.
“Since I have money, should I go out?”
The Academy’s dinner time has already passed, so I might as well go out to eat.
I hadn’t changed clothes since arriving at the dormitory, so I could go out just as I was.
Once you leave the dormitory and Academy, there’s a street lined with various shops to welcome you.
Among them, my attention was drawn to some chicken skewers that stimulated my sense of smell.
Glossy chicken skewers coated in sweet or spicy sauce.
“One chicken skewer, please. I’ll pay with this.”
“Please tap it here.”
I decided to try one since it wasn’t expensive.
When I brought the watch to the machine in front, there was a beep sound followed by confirmation of payment.
The chicken skewer I received had a subtle charcoal aroma along with a sweet soy sauce fragrance.
“Looks like it’s chicken thigh meat.”
The tender chicken that went down smoothly was thigh meat with some fat content, not breast meat.
Step. Step.
It’s been a while since I’ve eaten food while walking like this.
The game lacked realism and held little interest, and in reality, I couldn’t leave the hospital room.
Beep.
“Huh?”
While I was eating a hotteok I’d bought, I felt a vibration from my smartwatch.
Checking to see what it was, I found a message from the Academy.
[Notice to student Zeon. Zeon is assigned to Class 1-A tomorrow…]
The message sent to me contained information about the class Garein had mentioned and some precautions.
Class 1-A. Definitely the class where the protagonist would be.
Tomorrow, there were no special supplies needed, just wear the school uniform properly.
‘That’s right, they did that in the first class.’
The day I get my weapon to use at the Academy.
In the game, you got a random weapon based on the AI’s evaluation.
It was a growth-type weapon that evolved alongside the player up to a certain point, making it useful not only in the early stages but also potentially in the later stages if used well.
After filling my stomach with some snacks and returning to the dormitory, surprisingly, I fell asleep within 10 minutes.
Beep. Beep. Beep.
Morning begins with the watch alarm.
While heading to the Academy after getting out of bed, I realized something.
No matter how superhuman you are, mornings are always painful.
No matter how high your stats are, that doesn’t change.
“Yaaawn~”
“Ugh, so sleepy…”
Students showing similar or worse reactions than me started stumbling towards their respective classes.
While second and third-year students seemed somewhat adapted to the lifestyle, first-years weren’t.
“So this is student life.”
For someone like me who usually just ate and went straight back to sleep or played games after waking up, having to wake up this early for school was a very strange experience.
Arriving at Class A, where I’d belong for the next year, I saw the writing on the blackboard saying to sit anywhere since seats weren’t assigned yet, so I immediately took a corner seat and planted my face on the desk.
Alright, now I can get some sleep…
“Hahaha! Is that for real?”
“I’m telling you! So that day, I immediately used my phone to…”
“Wow, I’d be too nervous to even try that.”
“Hehe, would you like to join us later, Lady Kena?”
I frowned and covered my ears because of the noisy group at the back.
Hey, isn’t everyone supposed to be awkward and cautious around each other on the first day?
Why are they already so friendly!
‘Or maybe they’re not really friends.’
Looking at Kena who was at the center of that group, I quickly realized this wasn’t just a simple friendship.
I didn’t think highly of Kena while playing the game, and after yesterday’s unintentional mistake, I had quite a lot of complaints about this person.
‘What a delinquent.’
In the early stages, Kena is portrayed as a bully, what various media would call a delinquent.
Later, after getting beaten by Mir and going through certain events, she reforms and becomes an ally, but…
‘I’m not interested.’
I didn’t particularly like the washing machine incident either.
Well, it’s Mir’s decision, not mine.
Maybe the reformed Kena would be different, but right now, I don’t want to get involved with her.
“Then let me join in next time.”
“I’ll prepare everything nicely.”
Plus, if you listen carefully, their conversation contains quite uncomfortable content.
While there were others who frowned at their conversation like me, no one confronted them.
The status of the Freya family she belonged to kept their behavior in check.
Not to mention her skills were superior to others.
‘There are probably three people who could stop her?’
Reglia. Mir. And lastly, me.
Probably no one except us three could stop Kena.
“Keep it down. You’re too loud.”
And now Reglia spoke up with a frown, rebuking Kena’s group.
“I’m being plenty quiet.”
“In what way is that quiet? Lower your voice enough not to disturb others. And stop having such vulgar conversations in the Academy.”
However, Kena isn’t one to back down so easily.
From the start, the Freya and Einstro families were at odds with each other, from their elemental attributes to their family symbols, so their relationship wasn’t good.
Naturally, Kena twisted her lips at Reglia’s words and turned her gaze toward the other students in the class, shouting.
“I’m not being loud though? Hey! Does anyone here think my voice is loud?”
“You…”
“No one’s saying that? If someone thinks I’m being loud, of course I’ll be quiet…”
“Then be quiet. Because you’re being loud.”
“…Huh?”
Kena’s head turns with an almost audible ‘creeak’ sound effect as she looks toward the source of the voice.
Since Mir hasn’t arrived at school yet, there are only two people here who would act like this.
And since Reglia is already up ahead, naturally the person who just spoke is…
“I said you’re being loud.”
None other than me.
