Chapter 45: Chapter 45: Hymn of the Stars
With the situation laid out so clearly, how could Robin possibly refuse? She pursed her lips. "What do I need to do?"
"Just sing. We'll take care of the rest."
Despite these reassuring words, the city lacked the kind of super-powered loudspeakers that could blanket its entire area. Fortunately, they didn't need everyone in Longcheng to hear Robin's song. Zhong Wanhong barked orders: "Find the most densely populated areas where the Fancheng People live. Retrofit some speakers—and hurry!"
Since the Fancheng People had been forcibly relocated to Longcheng, the city had proactively cleared space for them, resulting in concentrated settlements rather than scattered communities.
The plan was simple: identify these areas and lug the speakers there.
But this was a perilous task. Densely populated areas meant overwhelmingly large zombie hordes, made even more dangerous by carrying the speakers.
While a truly captivating song could transcend language barriers and convey its inherent beauty, even Robin's music, however enchanting, had its limits. It couldn't possibly sway zombies; it would only attract every nearby undead creature.
The Bureau of Anomalous Investigations moved swiftly. In less than five minutes, several modified wireless speakers were brought out, and five major Fancheng People gathering areas in Longcheng were marked on a map.
Earlier, a member of the Fuguang Society had suggested deploying the military to assist in clearing the zombies. But by the time the army arrived, countless Evolvers would already be dead. The only hope for rescuing the remaining Evolvers now lay in dividing the Bureau's small team and sending them to these five locations.
While zombies might only account for about one-sixth of the city's population, for the dozen Bureau agents facing this mission, that still meant confronting a massive zombie horde—one-sixth of an entire city's population.
This was undoubtedly an extremely dangerous mission, yet none of the agents showed any hesitation. Zhong Wanhong handed a microphone to Robin and said, "Wait for my signal. Start singing once we reach our destination."
Without further discussion or empty platitudes about the mission's difficulty or last chances, Zhong Wanhong hurried out of the Bureau, every second precious. The others followed closely behind, streaming out in a single file.
"Lü Heng and I will go to Site A."
"You two head to Site B."
"As for Site C..."
The only communication was the assignment of destinations. No one needed to ask for confirmation; no one standing here would ever back down. Their homes were here, their duties lay here, and their mission compelled them.
Even the Fuguang Society member in handcuffs shouted, "Is that even allowed? Untie me! I want to help too! Let me go!"
But clearly, no one paid him any attention. Everyone piled into the police cars, started their engines, and sped away.
In the end, only Robin and Bai Yuanju remained at the Bureau of Anomalous Investigations. Bai Yuanju, a member of Zhong Wanhong's team, was the serious-looking woman with glasses whose primary duty was logistical support. She had discovered the area where the Fancheng People had gathered earlier.
Now, Bai Yuanju stared intently at the computer screen, her gaze fixed on the map displayed there. After a moment's hesitation, Robin asked, "They... they'll really be okay, right?"
"What do you mean?" Bai Yuanju asked, her eyes glued to the computer screen, not even glancing at Robin. "They're the elite of the elite, especially Captain Zhong Wanhong. You know his nickname is the Ghost of Fancheng."
"The Ghost of Fancheng?" Robin asked.
"He's a native of Fancheng who faced the Dimensional Rift head-on. During that disaster, he reportedly killed thousands of zombies and countless special infected, even some Alpha Infected, single-handedly. It's no exaggeration to say he stabilized a large area and saved countless lives."
"When the rescue team entered the city, they found him standing atop a mountain of rotting corpses, drenched in blood," Bai Yuanju said calmly. "So rest assured. I can't speak for other types of disasters, but when it comes to zombies, that man has it covered."
Only then did Robin truly relax, turning her attention to Bai Yuanju's computer screen. Five red dots raced across the map, heading toward various locations within the city. They were expected to arrive at their destinations shortly.
Robin began to consider which song she should sing. After much deliberation, she finally chose the first song she had learned upon arriving in this world: "Hymn of the Stars."
Approximately ten minutes later, Zhong Wanhong's command came through. Robin gripped the microphone tightly, her cherry lips parted slightly. Without hesitation, her gentle voice rose into the air, simultaneously activating her ability to infuse the song with its power:
Glimmer bright — a meteor graced the skies,Through shadowed clouds, a hope shall rise.
Break the dark with a silver flame,And carve in starlight your eternal name.
Come — beneath this veiled, unyielding night,We vow to wait for dawn's first light.
When the heavens sing and sorrow parts,We'll rise again — led by the stars.
Under normal circumstances, being suddenly asked to sing might have overwhelmed Robin with embarrassment, making it difficult for her to even open her mouth. But now, with everyone else fighting valiantly on the battlefield, what kind of person would she be if she hesitated to sing while safe in the rear?
In a corner of Longcheng, Zhong Wanhong felt the power emanating from Robin's voice and clenched his fist. He had never felt so energized. Of course, the overwhelming volume had inevitably drawn the attention of nearby zombies, who could already be seen moving toward their position.
As the police car approached the target location, it slowed to a crawl, allowing nearby Evolvers to hear the song more clearly. If they sped past, Evolvers might only catch a few words before the car was gone. Calmness was essential, but a few seconds of composure wouldn't suffice.
Zhong Wanhong had no choice but to slow down. He watched the approaching horde of zombies, parked the car, opened the door, and stepped out. "Switch places, Lü Heng," he said. "You drive, I'll handle these guys."
Similar scenes were unfolding simultaneously at five other locations across the city.
Three minutes flew by. As the song neared its end, Robin knew her Ability would fade with the music. She immediately looped back to the beginning, starting the song anew. She would continue this cycle indefinitely, until the operation concluded.
