I Became the Main Character’s Favorite

Chapter 4 - Tail?

Tail?

I crouched down and continued thinking about how to make a living.
At first, I prioritized studying hard and then getting a job at a company, but

‘I don’t want to study anymore…’
Perhaps because I had burned myself out too much in my previous life,
I seemed to have developed a condition (?) where my whole body trembled just hearing the word ‘study’, so I put that aside for now.
‘Then what’s left… what is there?’

The first thing that comes to mind is, of course, being a hunter.
Even at a glance, I think this body is optimized for working as a hunter, with its extremely fast natural healing ability.
Of course, if I recall the descriptions in the novel, healing power alone isn’t enough, and I’d need to acquire attack-related skills, but
Still, it was an undeniable fact that I was one step ahead of others.

‘Hmm.’
I felt a bit better.
I spread my tiny hands on the floor and hummed a tune, then
Finally brought out the last option I had put aside.
‘Streamer…’

To be honest, I’m not sure about this one.
The reason I included it as an option in the first place was because TV introduced it as a ‘job that earns good money’, albeit going too far, and it was a relatively familiar job compared to others.
I pondered for a moment, recalling the internet broadcasts I used to watch occasionally during my school days, then shook my head.
No matter how I thought about it, I didn’t have any particular talent as a streamer.

‘I’m not particularly funny, not particularly good at games, not particularly… cute… or am I cute?’
No, no, even if the exterior might be, the inside isn’t cute at all.
Rather than a manly man… well, that’s not quite right, so let’s compromise and say a medium man… no, anyway, I’m a man, so I was far from being cute.

As I was repeatedly shouting in my mind that I was absolutely not cute, someone entered the hospital room.
“Ha-eun, shall we go for a walk?”
Wondering who it was, I checked and saw Seo-rin with her eyes red and swollen.
At first, I was going to refuse because I had a lot to think about, but

Seeing her like that, my heart softened and I couldn’t help but nod.
“Big sister found some pretty places for Ha-eun while looking around the association yesterday. Shall we go there?”
“Yes.”

I successfully pronounced “yes” by forcibly swallowing the “ung” that almost came out due to my short tongue.
Feeling a bit proud of my success, I was feeling triumphant when
Seo-rin grabbed my armpits as if picking up a cat, lifted me up, and carried me like a princess while saying,
“Then shall we go?”

“Let’s go.”
With those words, Seo-rin stepped out of the hospital room with an awkward smile.

Although I had a rough idea of its size from the descriptions in the original work,
The association was much larger than I had imagined, far exceeding my expectations.

‘About the size of an entire apartment complex moved over?’
And that was just the size of the interior, not including the exterior of the association.
If you added the parks outside and external facilities, it would be too vast to estimate.
As I was blankly looking around, thinking that hunters must really earn a lot of money, Seo-rin smiled brightly and said to me,

“Ha-eun, did you know they sell ice cream over there?”
“Ice cweam?”
“Yes, ice cream. Do you like ice cream, Ha-eun?”
Feeling a bit embarrassed by my pronunciation, I quickly nodded to hide it.

Seo-rin patted my head and said,
“Then big sister will buy you some, let’s go eat!”
Similar to candy, I don’t particularly like ice cream.
Nevertheless, I nodded because I judged that pronunciation mistakes would be forgiven if I was eating something.

I decided to just swallow the ice cream I didn’t particularly like, and headed towards the ice cream stand being carried by Seo-rin.
*
“Delicious!”
It’s frustrating, but the ice cream was incredibly delicious.
Thinking I didn’t know it was such a delicious food,

I secretly added ice cream next to my favorite foods: spicy pork, soup with rice, and pork cutlet.
‘Perfect.’
I was trying to calm my rising smile corners while vowing to buy one every day when I earn a lot of money, when
Seo-rin, who was watching me from the side, smiled warmly and said to me,

“You know what, Ha-eun? Your tail wags every time you eat something delicious?”
“…?”
Tail? What does that mean?
I have a tail?

At first when I heard this, I thought it was a metaphor or a joke, but
I couldn’t help but pause when I saw Seo-rin pointing at a nearby glass.
‘Come on, no matter what, it can’t be true, right? Right?’

Surely I didn’t feel anything when I was lying down, and I didn’t feel like I had a tail at all, so there couldn’t be a tail.
Denying reality, I looked at the large glass panel, and there I saw a larger-than-expected tail swaying back and forth.
“Huh…?”

Unable to believe what I was seeing, I stared intently at the glass window, then rubbed the tail area with my palm, hoping the tail would disappear, but
The tail, whether knowing my feelings or not, started wagging even faster than before, fluttering rapidly.
“Meow!”

I was so surprised that I let out a sound characteristic of young children.
Embarrassed, I covered my mouth while glaring at the tail that was moving on its own, warning it to stop moving, but
The tail seemed to have no intention of listening to me and continued to move vigorously.

“Didn’t you know you had a tail? I thought you knew since you always hug it tightly when you sleep.”
Me? I was hugging this?
No, more shocking than that is the fact that I didn’t know I had been carrying this for over a week.

Wondering if some part of my senses was broken, I touched around my waist and hips, but the sensation was definitely there.
I blankly stared at the still wagging tail, then
Finally, not wanting to show any more vulnerability, I grabbed the tail and said inwardly,
‘Calm down!’

At my strong will, the tail momentarily paused, but
Then, as if throwing a 3-hit combo of ‘Me? Why? I don’t want to!’, the tail started wagging rapidly again.
Looking at the tail like this, I sighed, letting it go as if giving up.

‘I don’t know.’
Judging by the fact that I didn’t know I had a tail all this time, it seems I instinctively thought this tail wasn’t uncomfortable.
Deciding to just leave it be, I stared blankly at the tail.
‘I’m troubled, but the tail is excited.’

Thinking ‘Well, at least you’re happy’ and about to shrink back,
Seo-rin picked me up again and continued speaking.
“By the way, we need to buy you new clothes, Ha-eun. These have become so ragged we should throw them away now. How about trying on some new clothes?”

As she said, the condition of the clothes is certainly not good.
As I was pondering, looking at the clothes with not only the neck area all stretched out but also slightly torn,
Seo-rin looked at me and carefully said,

“Do you dislike it if it’s not those clothes? Originally, I tried to change you into different clothes when you were sleeping, but you strongly refused so I couldn’t.”
I don’t remember this either.
Thinking that although it’s my body, it’s full of questionable things, I looked at it and

Shook my head, saying it was okay to wear different clothes.
“Really? Then shall big sister choose clothes for you?”
Thinking anything would be better than these ragged clothes, I nodded and asked her to do so.

“Then shall we rest in the room for a while, eat, and then go? As much as I’d like to choose for you right away, I have to go for training soon, so I don’t think I can go now.”
“I understand.”
“Good, good. You’re so good.”

Seo-rin patted my head and then picked me up again.
I looked up at the sky blankly while being carried by Seo-rin, dangling.
‘I’m dizzy.’

My mind can’t handle so much information coming at once.
‘And with worries about the future adding to my concerns,’
Thinking my head might just explode, I was sighing inwardly when

Seo-rin hugged me tightly and whispered softly,
“Ha-eun, I’ll protect you no matter what happens. You don’t need to worry.”
Seeing Seo-rin trembling, I realized that

Although she’s pretending to be okay and cheerful, the trauma from prison still remains,
So I patted her shoulder, meaning that everything will be alright.
‘I hope she gets better soon.’

Having developed an attachment after spending a week together, it’s hard to see Seo-rin so heartbroken.
After comforting her by patting her head for a while, Seo-rin once again pretended to look okay and smiled brightly.
“Shall we go then?”

Looking at Seo-rin like this, I thought that now was a time when she needed time rather than comfort, and nodded.

As I was rolling around in the hospital room for a while, I noticed someone staring at me intently through the crack in the door.
Startled by that gaze, I bristled my tail, hugged it, and trembled, but

Judging that it wasn’t right to show such a weak appearance when my mind is that of a man, I straightened my back proudly.
Of course, there was a big problem in that I shrank back again in 5 seconds, but
Anyway, I mustered up courage and gently opened the door, speaking in a confident voice,

“Who is it…?”
I’m sure I spoke confidently in my mind, but the voice that came out was infinitely weak.
As I was pouting, thinking I might need to practice vocalization,
The pervert… no, suspicious person hiding behind the door flinched and said to me,

“Ah, hello? Big sister is not a suspicious person.”
“I see.”
You look obviously suspicious.

I quickly closed the door before something scary could happen.
I remembered Seo-rin’s words to be careful because there might be strange people even inside the association.
So I was about to go back to bed pretending not to have seen anything, when someone gently knocked on the door and shouted something.

“I said I’m not a suspicious person!”
That made it even more suspicious.
Still, thinking it might be good to check, I prepared to press the emergency button and opened the door,

A seemingly haughty woman wearing sunglasses sighed in relief and said to me,
“Haa. It seems we can finally communicate. You know me, right?”
I blinked blankly at that voice asking out of the blue if I knew her.

She crouched down on the floor, took out a puppy doll and all sorts of snacks, and said to me,
“So I’ll give you these.”
The flow of conversation is very strange.

For now, since you shouldn’t accept things from suspicious people, I tried hard to ignore the tempting snacks that were coming at me.
As I was trying to act like a scary person with the most solemn and serious expression I could muster, she kept reaching out blankly, trying to pat my head.
“No!”

I shouted strongly that it wasn’t allowed, but despite my struggle, she kept trying to pat my head, so
I had no choice but to bring out the logical talk I had sealed away because of my speech.
I started to speak to the woman standing in front of me in a somewhat serious voice about this matter.

“Even if that’s the case, it’s not okay for a stranger to pat someone’s head. That’s something you do when there’s trust built between people. So please stop touching me.”
(Although I had to modify the words a bit as I got a little out of breath while speaking,
I included all the important content, so it should be fine.)

I looked ahead thinking she would understand with this, but she didn’t seem to have any intention of listening.
“Mmm, I see. Then how about this? It’s a new product that just came out, and I heard young children really like it.”
I was getting sulky because she wasn’t listening at all, when

Someone rushed in and urgently shouted,
“Hunter Han A-rin! You’re not supposed to go in there!”
Han A-rin?

That’s a name I’ve heard a lot somewhere.
I soon realized that Han A-rin was the name of the 7th ranked hunter appearing in the original novel, and couldn’t help but flinch.
‘If I remember correctly, Han A-rin is a genius magician, but someone who doesn’t take interest in anything.’

I stepped back again, thinking I couldn’t understand at all why such a person would be interested in me.
