Chapter 183: Great Glazed Temple and Glazed Buddha
Late Afternoon, the sky was completely dark.
To the west of Pingtan County, apart from a stretch of official road winding through small hills, both sides were desolate mountains and wilderness. Even as Lu Zheng squinted to observe, shadowy figures loomed, and the sounds of wolves howling and crows cawing faintly reached his ears.
About seven or eight miles west of the city, a dirt path branched off from the official road, extending northwards towards a mountain, leading directly to the long-abandoned Jiming Temple from over a decade ago.
"The official road west of the city makes a big circle. This small path also has an exit in the northwest side. For towns traveling to Pingtan County, it's actually closer by this path, with the nearest point to Jiming Temple being less than two miles away. This is why many locals experience strange occurrences at Jiming Temple," Yuan Jing explained.
The group arrived at the fork in the road and continued along the small path for two more miles until they faintly saw golden light emanating from the trees on the mountain peak ahead.
"Thus I have heard... And the White Buddha said... If not, there is thought..." Waves of chanting came through, sounds penetrating the ears.
"Buddha Light with golden shine, chanting the scriptures." Lu Zheng's eyes flickered and he invoked the "Nine Heavens Golden Palace True God Transformation Technique," guarding his spirit, unsullied by dust, and impervious to evil thoughts.
Yuan Jing also protected himself with Cloud Qi, while Guangyue's eyes shone with intensity, his lips slightly moving, seemingly reciting the Buddhist scripture silently.
The three continued without pause, quickly arriving within the three-mile range of Jiming Temple, as they turned the mountain path, no longer obstructed by rocks and trees, the source of the golden light and chanting immediately came into view.
"Good heavens!"
"Infinite Celestial Venerable!"
"Amitabha Buddha!"
It was an imposing temple, with golden gates, golden walls, and golden halls, everything seemingly forged of pure gold. Above the gate hung a sign reading "Great Glazed Temple," even allowing the three to see past the gate's eaves to layers of three-tiered pavilions within, with the rear-most hall being the highest, inscribed "Great Hero Hall," radiating golden light.
Additionally, the entire temple emitted golden Buddha Light, under its illumination, only a sense of peace and tranquility was felt. As they approached, the chanting from the temple grew louder, not reaching the ears but resonating directly within their minds.
"The grandeur is overwhelming..." Lu Zheng remarked.
"Truly audacious..." Yuan Jing commented.
"Amitabha Buddha!"
"Yet, it truly carries the aura of the Buddhist Sect. I sense no Demon Qi, Ghost Qi, or Nether Qi," Lu Zheng mused, stroking his chin, turning to Guangyue, "Master, do you notice anything?"
Guangyue replied in a deep voice, "Buddha Light is pure, translucent glaze, belonging to the lineage of Glazed Medicine Buddha's cultivation."
Oh my, even professionals sense nothing amiss?
"Let me try." Lu Zheng said, then casually cast an Exorcism Curse towards the temple gate.
"Buzz!"
Green light dissipated, Buddha Light blossomed, and the temple's Buddha Light suddenly flared brilliantly, while chanting turned swift and heavy in an instant.
The next moment, the temple gate opened wide, a Buddhist chant echoed.
"Amitabha, Eastern Pure Glass World's Great Glazed Temple opens the door of convenience widely, destined ones enter my Glazed World, ascend to my Pure Land of Ultimate Bliss, worship my Glazed Buddha, free of flaw and stain, the purest of purity, to rebirth in bliss, eternal peace, Amitabha!"
The next moment, waves of chanting ensued, but the specific content was unclear.
"Putting on airs!" Yuan Jing snorted coldly, slapping himself with a Golden Light Curse, then advanced using Cloud Gathering Technique to protect himself.
Lu Zheng and Guangyue exchanged a glance, then followed him inside.
Entering the temple, Lu Zheng stepped on the ground, paved with bluestone, yet faintly shimmering with golden light, with jade railings adorned on either side, Buddha Light peeking through, with side halls and temples all sealed shut. It was unclear where the chanting that permeated the air originated.
As the three walked together, they noted that even though the temple was magnificently grand and resplendent, it was entirely devoid of human presence.
They arrived at the Celestial King Hall, looking up.
"Huh?" Lu Zheng raised an eyebrow, noting that the Celestial King Hall was no different from other buildings, inscribed with "Celestial King Hall" on the plaque, with a divine throne at its center. The only difference was that the throne in the Celestial King Hall lacked a sculpture.
"Where are the Buddha statues in the Celestial King Hall?" Lu Zheng questioned, turning to Guangyue, "Who is typically enshrined here?"
Guangyue shook his head, "It depends on the Buddhist sect, either Fulong Vajra, Mountain Guardian Celestial King, or Future Buddha. Judging by the name, those enshrined are either Fulong Vajra or Mountain Guardian Celestial King."
"That's odd." Lu Zheng shook his head, as the three glanced at the Celestial King Hall without any intention to enter, choosing instead to bypass it on the left.
The left was the Bell Tower and the right was the Drum Tower, with the Golden Bell and Jade Drum inscribed in Sanskrit, flashing golden light, seemingly breathing, as waves of Buddha Light rippled outward like waves, merging into the pervasive Buddha Light.
The Bodhisattva Hall and Arhat Hall on either side of the path remained closed, unseen from outside, it was unclear whether they were as empty of statues as the Celestial King Hall.
The three proceeded to the second tier of the temple complex.
"Sunlight Hall?" Lu Zheng read the name of the hall, turning to look at Guangyue, with a mysterious gaze.
"Amitabha Buddha!" Guangyue explained, "My Rizhao Temple adopts the Great Sun Illumination concept, this Sunlight Hall of Great Glazed Temple likely enshrines the Sunlight Bodhisattva."
"But..." Lu Zheng pointed at the front of the hall.
"And still nothing..." Yuan Jing added.
The throne in front of the main hall of the Sunlight Hall was still utterly empty, nothing there.
"A temple, Buddha Light, and chanting, yet without people, ghosts, nor even clay or wooden statues." Lu Zheng pondered, stroking his chin, looking behind the Sunlight Hall, spotting three tiers of steps, leading to the Great Hero Hall situated atop a ten-meter-high platform.
"Let's go!"
...
Three tiers of steps, twenty-two on the first, thirty-three on the second, and forty-four on the third, as they ascended, the towering Great Hero Hall came into view.
"Hiss—"
The Great Hero Hall gates were wide open, with a Buddha seated on the main stage, bald from receiving vows, clad in golden robes, baring his chest, seated cross-legged, eyes half-open and chanting incantations.
Indeed, this Buddha emitted golden radiance all over, resembling a golden statue, continuing to recite scriptures!
Beside the Buddha, stood two Bodhisattvas on each side; the left appeared dignified, adorned in luxurious garments, while the right exuded a serene elegance, dressed plainly, also seated on the Buddha altar, sealing and reciting scriptures.
Though the three could not see the hall's sides, the intense golden light and the overlapping chant emanating from both sides implied more than these three within the hall.
"Amitabha, having entered the Glazed Pure Land, why not step into my domain, hear the Buddha's command, become a Buddha in a single thought, ascend to ultimate bliss!" a grand voice echoed in their minds, "Glazed Buddha is present, yet you do not enter to worship, pray with sincerity, Amitabha!"
