Chapter 39 – Comfort, Affection, and a Sincere Wish

Aoi and Midnight had just arrived home. However, before he could even touch the doorknob, the door swung open with force.

"Aoi!" Rei exclaimed, pulling him inside abruptly, her eyes wide with worry. "Are you okay? Where does it hurt? Do we need to go to the hospital? Did you break anything?"

Before he could even respond, Aoi found himself being examined from head to toe, as if he were about to faint at any moment.

"Mom…" he muttered, a bit embarrassed as he tried to gently stop her fussing. "Calm down, I'm fine! With my quirk, there's no way I could really get hurt."

Rei paused for a second, took a deep breath, and then shot him a stern look that made Aoi swallow hard.

"Just because you can heal doesn't mean you can go around being reckless! You're my son, and that will never change!"

Aoi sighed and lowered his shoulders, defeated by the overwhelming sincerity of his mother's love.

"Alright, alright… I promise I'll be more careful next time."

Meanwhile, Midnight was in the living room recounting the incident to Ryuko and Mirko, who were both listening intently. When the explanation ended, the two heroines approached Aoi, visibly affected by the story.

Ryuko, looking especially guilty, was the first to speak.

"Aoi… I'm sorry. I couldn't help you when you needed it most. I feel like I failed…"

Aoi, surprised by the intensity of her emotion, gently touched her hand and said softly:

"You don't have to blame yourself, Ryuko. It was something no one could've predicted. And you already do more for me than you realize."

Mirko, always blunt and direct, stepped forward with serious eyes.

"I failed you too. I promised I'd smash the face of anyone who dared to threaten you, but… I wasn't there when it really mattered. That was my mistake. So if there's any way I can make it up to you… just say the word."

Aoi looked at her for a few seconds, thoughtful. Then, with a small smile, he stepped closer and asked:

"Can you lean down a little?"

Mirko raised an eyebrow, confused, but obeyed. When Aoi whispered something in her ear, her eyes widened and a faint blush appeared on her cheeks.

"You've got some nerve, huh…" she murmured, smirking slightly.

A few minutes later, Rei, Midnight, and Ryuko were sitting at the dining table, silently watching the scene unfold in the living room.

There, Aoi was resting his head on Mirko's lap, asleep, while she gently stroked his hair — a surprising image to anyone familiar with the tough, no-nonsense heroine.

Midnight, always quick with a teasing remark, grinned and leaned over to Rei.

"So, Rei-san… what's it like seeing your future daughter-in-law being so tender with your son?"

Ryuko quickly tried to intervene.

"Nemuri! Seriously, behave…"

But Rei simply laughed softly, her eyes filled with affection.

"Mirko is an amazing girl. I'd love to have her as a daughter-in-law." She then glanced at the other two and added, "And the same goes for both of you."

Ryuko and Midnight immediately blushed and looked away, clearly flustered, though small smiles crept onto their faces as they glanced back at Aoi.

Meanwhile, Mirko continued to stroke Aoi's hair. Curious and a little embarrassed, she finally asked:

"Aoi… why did you ask for this?"

He slowly opened his eyes, then smiled up at her sincerely.

"From the first time I saw you… I thought: 'I want to make that woman my girlfriend.'"

Mirko's eyes widened for a second. Then she playfully tapped his forehead, smiling in amusement.

"If that's your goal, kid… you're gonna have to work really hard."

Aoi responded instantly, eyes full of determination:

"If it means having you… of course I'll work hard."

Mirko crossed her arms, pretending to consider.

"Hm… then let's see how hard you're willing to work, you bold little brat."

And in that living room, surrounded by teasing, quiet laughter, and unspoken promises, the bond between them grew deeper with every gesture, every word — making it clear that, no matter what dangers the future might bring, Aoi would never be alone again.
