Chapter 30
Chapter 30
“I can probably take one more hit…”
But if it uses [Stormwind], it’s over.
—Thud, thud.
The Cockatrice’s footsteps grew closer. Just like back then. No, there’s a slight, very slight difference. The blood-soaked Cockatrice reared its head back. The beak was coming.
—Thunk!
The beak pierced through the wound in my stomach. The fresh blood gushing from my abdomen mixed with its green blood. This is the final blow. The final one. But still—
“I can… take one more hit…!”
With the sword in my left hand, I skewered the Cockatrice’s eye from the side. The blade tip emerged from the other eye. I definitely pierced its brain.
—Screeeeeech!
The Cockatrice trembled, its massive body shaking the ground as it collapsed.
“Huff… huff… huff…”
Slowly, ever so slowly, I stood up. If I stayed down, I’d become food for other monsters. Checking my HP on the status screen, I saw a number so low I couldn’t even fight a mouse.
“…Really… just one more hit…”
Covered in the Cockatrice’s blood, I walked toward its twitching, massive head and pulled the sword out from its eye socket.
—Squelch…
The Cockatrice’s body jerked, shaking the forest, and then it stopped moving entirely.
A magic stone was spat out from its beak, and I picked it up.
“I need to get back…”
Using the sword, now sheathed, as a cane, I stumbled and fell multiple times but somehow managed to make it back to the cave. As I lay down inside the cave, a sudden chill ran through me, and my body began to shake. Blood loss and adrenaline. But I’m still alive. I got lucky.
For the next three days, I couldn’t move. I staved off hunger with the Rainbow Fruits I had saved and waited patiently to recover.
“…I was an idiot.”
I muttered to myself. I really was an idiot. I fought without fully understanding my opponent. I got carried away by the thrill of becoming stronger. This world isn’t that simple.
“Next time, I’ll be more careful, more precise…”
As I nibbled on a Rainbow Fruit, I engraved this lesson into my heart.
