Chapter 9
Chapter 9
When I came to, I was lying face down on a bed of green moss. I lifted my head and realized I was in the middle of a forest. Birds were chirping all around me.
There was none of that bright, cheerful atmosphere you’d find on a hiking trail. It was unnaturally dim, with thick foliage everywhere, and no sign of a path. The rustling sounds of animals moving about here and there filled me with unease.
“Is this… the Demon Forest…?”
What was I supposed to do in this situation? Chew on tree roots to survive? Being summoned here without warning and then abandoned like this—it’s insane. Why do I have to go through this alone—?
A sudden noise made me flinch.
It was the sound of birds taking flight all at once.
Dozens of them—flying away as if they sensed something.
——Whoooosh…
A large shadow passed overhead.
Something was coming.
I hid behind a giant, rotten fallen tree.
Gruel’s words echoed in my mind.
[It’s only fitting that you’ll be eaten by monsters and die.]
Cold sweat dripped down my back.
——Thud.
Something landed on the ground.
