Chapter 105: Chapter 107: Damn You!
An IMAX camera is not cheap. A 3D IMAX digital camera costs $1 million. Due to the immature technology, a 2D IMAX film camera costs even more.
However, the million-dollar equipment was now disassembled into neatly arranged parts on the research table of the Type-Moon company.
Shinji had a simple reason for doing this: he wanted to test whether the technology developed by Touko and Medea could be used in the IMAX camera.
During the filming of UBW and HF, Touko and Medea developed many strange film projection technologies.
Some were useful, some were not, and some seemed useful but couldn't be applied to filmmaking.
For example, Medea created an AR-like projection device based on her own crystal ball.
This was novel but impractical for movies.
AR projection required a large venue, causing significant differences in the viewing experience from different seats.
Unlike current theaters where most seats provide a similar viewing experience, AR projection would make the distance differences between the front and back rows too significant, leading to audience complaints.
However, the technology wasn't entirely useless. Shinji believed it could enhance gaming experiences in the future, so he patented it.
Ultimately, among the various technologies invented by the two magicians, Shinji selected two: naked-eye 3D technology and vibration technology.
He chose these two because both 3D movies and 4D vibration had been proven feasible in his previous life.
The magical versions of 3D and vibration technology were far more advanced than their technological counterparts.
Before Shinji's time travel, 3D technology had become widespread, including glasses-free 3D.
However, the limitations of glasses-free 3D meant that successful products were rare, with Nintendo's 3DS series being an exception.
Even then, the 3DS wasn't overwhelmingly impressive, and Shinji usually played with the 3D feature off.
There were rumors that James Cameron's "Avatar 2" would use glasses-free 3D, but by the time Shinji transmigrated into this world, it remained just a rumor. Cameron still planned to use traditional 3D glasses, and given his tendency to delay projects, Shinji doubted "Avatar 2" would be ready by 2028, let alone the fifth installment.
Shinji felt that having his technicians develop glasses-free 3D technology already surpassed Cameron's achievements. Technically, the naked-eye 3D technology developed by Touko and Medea was vastly different from the glasses-required 3D technology.
All technological 3D methods rely on the visual disparity between the two eyes to create a sense of depth.
Without 3D glasses, viewers see a double-image 2D picture. However, the magical 3D technology was different.
It recorded magical fluctuations during filming and projected them in a stereoscopic way through a special projector and screen.
This made the images themselves three-dimensional, allowing viewers to see them directly with the naked eye.
The vibration technology was similar, recording magical fluctuations during filming and replaying them through a special method.
This wasn't physical vibration but a mental impact from the magical fluctuations, creating the illusion of vibration.
Comparing the two technologies, Shinji couldn't decide which was better. The technological version processed the final film, while the magical version required special handling during filming, increasing production costs.
Filmmakers can't guarantee which scenes will be used until the final cut, and Shinji, having deleted numerous scenes himself, knew this well.
However, the magical version had its advantages. It didn't require frame-by-frame processing like the technological version.
"Well, at least my technology doesn't need 3D glasses. Those who already wear glasses will definitely appreciate it," Shinji said cheerfully, shrugging his shoulders.
"It's us," Touko, with a cigarette in her mouth, reminded. "Shinji, you didn't contribute anything to the invention."
Shinji shrugged and responded, "So, how should we calculate the consumption of magical energy for shooting and playback?"
Unlike technology that works by plugging it in, magecraft consumes mana. In this world where mystery is continually declining, ensuring the longevity of Projection is key.
"There shouldn't be any problems," Medea, who was checking the IMAX camera parts, lifted her head and replied, "As long as the projection equipment is connected to the local leyline, even the weakest leyline can support the magical energy needed for movie playback."
"Do you have specific data?"
"Although we haven't conducted experiments, according to my calculations..." Medea thought for a moment before answering, "Even the lowest-grade leyline can support at least 80 magic films being projected simultaneously without depleting the leyline itself."
"That many?" Shinji raised his head in surprise.
"Modern magecraft's efficiency in utilizing leyline mana is too poor. Most mana is consumed during conversion," Medea said disdainfully. "I don't know if it's because Age of God Magecraft is lost or because modern magecraft's development is too weak."
In other words, Medea meant: "No offense, but all modern magus here are trash."
"What about the shooting aspect?" Shinji asked another question. "Since we need to record magical fluctuations, the camera needs mana too, right?"
"Even less," Medea picked up a part of the IMAX camera in one hand and opened a folding fan with the other. "Even for this IMAX camera, three of the artificial gems you made to store mana are enough."
Touko, having finished her cigarette, chimed in, "The biggest issues limiting the promotion of this technology are twofold. First, the installation of projection equipment requires a professional magus. Second, the actors need to have mana to record the fluctuations."
"Do the actors have to be Heroic Spirits?" Shinji asked curiously.
"At least they need to be a Magi," Touko lit her second cigarette.
'It seems the magic world will continue to head down the path of entertainment.'
Shinji felt that after promoting his technology, the old men in the circle would hate him even more. But he didn't care about their feelings.
He was more concerned about something else.
"Is there no way for ordinary actors to use this technology? It's not conducive to the widespread adoption of this technology in the circle."
Medea thought for a moment and suggested, "Actually, Master, the slime you developed might work with some modifications. But its magical fluctuations are single, and the projection would just appear as a protrusion, which is very abrupt."
"Then let's proceed with that for now. You two should focus on studying the slime to see if it can be used for filming," Shinji concluded by patting the table.
"By the way, there's one more thing."
"What?"
Shinji pointed to the pile of parts on the table and said, "We need to put this thing back together now."
Touko suddenly yawned. "I've been working overtime for several days. I need to take a break."
Medea took out a scroll of parchment. "Master, I have other technologies to handle. I'll be leaving now."
Then, Medea and Touko left the research room one after another, leaving Shinji staring at the pile of parts in dismay.
"Hey! You two! Don't go!"
The next day, Shinji, in his role as a company consultant, met with the leader of the technical team sent by IMAX and demonstrated the naked-eye 3D and vibration technology.
Of course, Shinji wasn't going to admit it was magical technology.
He simply told the leader that this was a new technology developed by Type-Moon, perfectly suitable for IMAX.
This was true because the larger the screen, the more magic arrays could be inscribed, enhancing the viewing effect.
In this regard, the technology developed by Touko and Medea was inherently suited for IMAX screens.
When the leader heard that Type-Moon had naked-eye 3D technology, he was bewildered.
But after seeing the effect in the temporary screening room, he became immediately excited.
This leader wasn't stupid.
He knew the benefits of applying this technology to IMAX, especially since it was naked-eye 3D.
In a world where even standard 3D with glasses was not fully mature, obtaining a technology that could lead the market was an opportunity IMAX couldn't miss.
"Director Matou, rest assured, IMAX will fully cooperate with you. We eagerly anticipate the birth of a naked-eye 3D IMAX movie." The leader smiled broadly. "If you have any requests, feel free to ask. I will fulfill them."
"Requests? I do have one," Shinji nodded, slightly embarrassed.
"What is it?"
"I dismantled one of the two IMAX cameras I rented. Can you rent me a new one?"
"...Damn you!"
