Chapter 109: Chapter 111: A Tenacious Hero's Indispensable Trait
"I've been looking forward to this episode for a long time,"
As always, it was a scene at the Kuonji residence, in the usual living room. Alice spoke to Aoko beside her.
"Today's episode is definitely going to be interesting."
"I agree with that." Aoko nodded. "After the Caster group's story ends, the plot will likely follow the movie version."
Since the last episode where Gilgamesh forcefully killed Heracles and seized the Lesser Grail, fans have discussed the subsequent storyline countless times online.
After nearly a week of back-and-forth discussions and various debates, fans finally arrived at a broadly accepted outline of the future plot of UBW.
According to predictions based on this outline, the protagonists should be able to defeat Caster and reclaim Saber with Lancer's help.
Then, Lancer would once again become an adversary, but soon Gilgamesh and Kotomine Kirei would show up and cause trouble.
Seeing their behavior, Lancer might betray his team and then get killed by Gilgamesh.
The final battle would mirror the movie version, with Saber and Shirou fighting against Gilgamesh and Kotomine Kirei.
Aoko agreed with this plot speculation; it was logical and reasonable without being excessive.
The only thing that puzzled Aoko was how the character Archer would be handled.
Caster's story had been fully explored—her identity, past, and motivations had all been revealed to the audience, leaving nothing but for her to exit the stage.
But Archer was different.
He was a crucial character in the TV series, with Matou Shinji dedicating plenty of screen time to him.
Aoko felt that Archer was likely to play a key role in the upcoming story.
"If only we knew Archer's true name,"
Aoko remarked, rolling her eyes.
With the series two-thirds through, Archer's true name had yet to be revealed, indicating its significant importance.
Revealing it would be a major twist.
"Initially, everyone guessed Archer's true name might be the ancient Chinese swordsmith, but from UBW's plot, it's clearly not the case."
Alice flipped through her notebook, reading out the recorded information.
"Some people currently speculate that Archer's true name could be the Japanese swordsmith Muramasa, because he's used a Japanese sword as a weapon several times."
Aoko shook her head. "But hasn't Archer mostly used Gan Jiang and Mo Ye? A Chinese swordsmith seems more accurate."
"I don't think it's Muramasa either," Alice expressed her thoughts. "But it can't be another swordsmith because if it were, there'd be no need to keep his true name hidden for so long. Archer's name must hold some significant secret."
Aoko pouted, complaining, "I really want to figure this out soon. That brat from the Matou family always likes to be mysterious."
"That's called creating suspense."
Alice was always tireless when it came to defending her idol.
But this time, Alice didn't insist for long because the TV show had started.
Aoko didn't continue arguing with Alice either; she wanted to watch the show too.
UBW was indeed a good TV series, and Aoko quickly got engrossed in it.
The episode began with the church battle.
In the last episode, the protagonist group had already made their plans.
Lancer was to deal with Archer, Rin was to handle Caster, and Shirou was to stall the Teacher while Rin dealt with Caster.
It was a risky plan, but Rin, having no better options, had no choice but to adopt this strategy.
As with most plans devised by the protagonist group in TV dramas, the operation started smoothly.
With just a few lines of dialogue, the enmity between Lancer and Archer reached its peak, and the two began their fight in the church courtyard.
However, Shinji cleverly avoided showing the highly anticipated battle between the two Servants.
Instead, the scene switched to the interior of the church, where a less spectacular fight was taking place.
Calling it less spectacular might be unfair because only Shirou Emiya was a rookie; his opponent, Kuzuki, was a formidable fighter.
Many viewers thought Shirou would be quickly defeated.
However, contrary to expectations, the seemingly weak protagonist managed to hold his ground against Kuzuki with his projection magecraft—or so it seemed.
In reality, Shirou was still getting beaten up, but he had the tenacity typical of hot-blooded protagonists: as long as he wasn't dead, he kept fighting.
Despite being repeatedly knocked down by Kuzuki, Shirou was undeterred and kept charging forward.
Just as the audience expected the church battle to be resolved first, the scene switched back to Archer and Lancer's fight.
Shinji didn't use a typical editing style but deliberately overlapped and interchanged scenes of Shirou and Archer.
"That shot was a hint, wasn't it?"
In the rest area of Type-Moon Company, Iskandar, sipping his drink, couldn't help but smack his lips as he watched the scene change.
"It's a pity. It would've been great if that kid could be my guard,"
Iskandar downed his drink and sighed.
Gilgamesh sneered, "King of Conquerors, are you after that fake's weapons?"
"I have no choice," Iskandar wagged his finger. "I can't beat you, Golden King, so I have to target Archer."
"His swords, combined with my soldiers, would create the most invincible army in the world! We could conquer the entire world!"
Perhaps envisioning himself leading conquests on horseback, Iskandar excitedly slammed his fist into the table, leaving a large dent.
"And then your invincible army would be wiped out by a single nuclear missile,"
Enkidu poured cold water on Iskandar's enthusiasm.
With the current strength of Iskandar and Archer's spiritual forms, even without nuclear missiles, modern military forces could probably defeat them with a barrage of missiles.
"Hey, Chain of Heaven," Iskandar tapped Enkidu's head with his finger, "Don't ruin my fun."
Enkidu laughed, "I'm just reminding you not to do something foolish. Don't cause trouble for Master."
"You're such a killjoy,"
Iskandar complained again, but it was just a complaint.
He knew that if he really angered the green-haired guy, Enkidu would probably tie him up with the Chains of Heaven.
'Why did I have to be divine? I wish I hadn't boasted about being Zeus's son in my past life.'
Unable to gain an advantage in the conversation, Iskandar returned his attention to the TV.
'A knight betrayed by his dreams, sticking to his path…'
Watching Archer fight bravely against Cú Chulainn on screen, Iskandar shook his head in regret.
A foolish guy.
But he didn't dislike him.
In fact, Iskandar admired Archer because, even though his dreams had betrayed him, he continued on his path.
After reading the UBW script, Iskandar immediately understood that Archer never intended to kill his past self.
What Archer wanted was to help his past self complete his ideals, so he wouldn't repeat the same mistakes.
Archer's aloof attitude was just because he was tsundere.
"A lovable fool."
Iskandar muttered to himself as he refilled his drink.
Compared to the well-informed Iskandar who had read the script, the two female magus at Kuonji's residence had a different feeling.
Aoko and Alice noticed the hint in the shot but didn't think much about it.
They didn't have time to think because the following scenes were fast-paced fights that demanded their full attention.
Feeling the superhuman battle atmosphere of the two Servants, Aoko even felt her adrenaline levels rising.
Once again, she had the urge to fight the Servants.
"I love this TV show,"
Aoko said, licking her lips.
Alice rolled her eyes beside her.
'Aoko's crazy side is acting up again.'
Alice immediately realized.
At that moment, a loud thunderous sound echoed in the living room.
It wasn't thunder from outside, but Lancer throwing his magical spear at Archer.
Lancer, leaping high like a divine warrior, threw his red magic spear with such force that it distorted the surrounding air.
"Gáe Bolg—!"
Faced with the inevitable death spear, Archer didn't sit idly by.
He extended his hand and projected a cherry blossom-shaped shield named—
"Rho Aias!"
The spear and shield clashed in mid-air, creating a storm and heatwave that shattered and scattered debris.
Even through the screen, Aoko could feel the fierce winds.
The collision, like a comet hitting Earth, ended in a draw.
Lancer's ultimate move didn't pierce Archer's heart, and although Archer blocked the spear, he was left with a battered body.
Seeing his ultimate move blocked, Lancer was furious.
"This is getting interesting. Who will win?"
Aoko's eyes shone with excitement.
The current situation seemed to favor Cú Chulainn, but his trump cards were exposed, while Archer still held some mystery.
This asymmetry in information made Aoko even more eager to see the battle's outcome.
However, just as Aoko thought the two Servants were about to reveal their trump cards, the two knights on the screen, after a brief exchange of praises, parted ways.
They stopped fighting!
"Too bad, their fight was interrupted again!"
Alice expressed her regret.
She thought this time they could conclude the battle at the school field, but it ended halfway again.
"That Matou guy did it on purpose!"
Aoko grumbled angrily, "He likes to leave things unfinished, always making people feel unresolved. I hope his girlfriend treats him the same way in the future."
Though not entirely in agreement, Alice nodded in affirmation.
