Chapter 296
He glanced at the address and key in his hand and couldn't help but grip them tightly.
Kurapika wasn't particularly concerned about Hisoka's situation.
However, Hisoka was a man who had left a significant mark on his life during the Hunter Exam, which made Kurapika feel a bit nostalgic and contemplative.
"Whirr... beep beep... whirr?"
At that moment, Kurapika's phone rang again.
"The boss has woken up, has she?"
Upon learning the situation from Melody, Kurapika immediately said,
"You all wait there for me. For now, don't tell the boss about her father and the mafia.
Keep her emotions stable, and if you can get her to rest and fall asleep again, that would be best. I'm heading over right away!"
After hanging up, Kurapika left without looking back, as if signaling his entry into a new environment and bidding farewell to Hisoka and past collaborations.
When Kurapika returned to the Nostrade family's hotel base, Neon was already sound asleep.
"How is the boss?" Kurapika asked Melody in the outer living room.
"Overall, her emotions are stable, mainly because we haven't told her about her father," Melody replied honestly.
"Did you reveal anything else to the boss?" Kurapika pressed further.
"We informed the boss that Captain Dalzollene died in the line of duty during a fight with the enemy, and that the auction items are irretrievable," Squala added.
"The boss was very disappointed upon hearing the auction items couldn't be recovered; she seemed quite fond of that mummy."
Basho, arms crossed, spoke in a deep voice, "And how did she react to Captain Dalzollene's situation?"
Kurapika wanted to gauge Neon's emotions.
"No reaction whatsoever," Baise said with a light chuckle, brushing her hair.
"Our boss seems to care only about her auction items and is indifferent to everything else.
If we told her that her father is no longer in this world, she might not react differently."
Kurapika's eyes narrowed slightly, then he continued, "Does the boss have any other instructions?"
"No, she said she'll ask properly when her father, Mr. Nostrade, returns," said Linssen, a bodyguard with little presence, in a low voice.
Inquiring of Light Nostrade was essentially impossible...
"So, what should we do?" Kurapika pondered, looking around at his colleagues.
"With Mr. Nostrade and the captain gone, and the boss unable to take charge, I think our immediate priority is to elect a spokesperson.
This way, we can respond to situations promptly, stabilize the family's internal affairs, and have a protocol when dealing with external mafia families."
At this point, Kurapika looked at Squala, who had dark skin. "I think you should be the spokesperson, Squala."
"Huh?! Why me?!" Squala exclaimed in shock, pointing at himself.
"You're the most senior among us," Linssen interjected. He, Squala, and Dalzollene were all originally hired bodyguards by Nostrade. Kurapika, Melody, Basho, and Baise joined later.
"Even so, I'm not suited to be the captain!" Squala quickly waved his hands in refusal. "Besides, I don't want to take care of that little girl!"
In his heart, he was strongly opposed to this. He knew well about Neon's capriciousness and didn't want to deal with the issues of a young girl's life. Moreover...
"The previous spokesperson, Captain Dalzollene, met a tragic end, not even leaving a complete body. I don't want to follow in his footsteps."
Thinking of Dalzollene's fate, Squala felt very apprehensive and was even more resistant to being a spokesperson. He had a fiancée and many dogs to care for; he couldn't just die carelessly.
"How about this? Let's vote to elect a new spokesperson and stabilize the situation promptly," Melody suggested. "I nominate Kurapika!"
"He's calm, composed, has strong analytical skills, and his judgments are often accurate. I believe he's the most qualified to be the captain!"
Melody stood firmly on Kurapika's side, feeling he was the most suitable person for the role.
"I agree too!" More than one person shared Melody's view.
---
"I agree with the reasoning, I vote for him too!" Basho nodded in support.
"That's right!" Linssen had no objections. "Please be our captain!"
Even Squala, who was relieved to find someone else to take the lead, quickly chimed in. "I have no problem with it either."
Baise added, "I don't see any reason to oppose, especially since Kurapika knows Morin."
Seeing the unanimous support from his colleagues, Kurapika fell silent for a moment. "Alright, I'll temporarily take on the role of captain," he said softly. "Once the boss wakes up, she can make the final decision."
The opportunity came faster than expected!
Kurapika's goal had always been singular: to connect with the V5, reach their leaders, and find the true culprits behind the Kurta Clan massacre, bringing them to justice and retrieving his clan's eyes.
This was Kurapika's unwavering pursuit and wish.
He believed that one way to approach the V5 was to first become a spokesperson for the underground forces, thus gaining the qualifications and means to contact the V5.
Suddenly, a crisp round of applause echoed in the room. "Congratulations, Kurapika," a man's gentle laughter filled the space.
"Congratulations..." The other five bodyguards instinctively began to clap as well but quickly realized something was amiss. The voice wasn't from any of them.
"Who is it?!" Basho spun around, a sheet of haiku paper appearing in his hand.
Squala was startled, Linssen's face turned even paler, and Melody's pupils contracted. "When did an extra person appear? I couldn't even hear his heartbeat!"
Melody could discern different voices, confirming it wasn't any of her colleagues speaking.
However, she hadn't noticed when an extra person had entered the room, nor detected an additional heartbeat.
Their reactions were startled, but Baise and Kurapika merely paused, revealing different expressions.
"You've arrived?" Just from hearing the voice, Baise knew who it was. She turned around with delight, seeing the person she missed, and immediately leapt towards him.
"What?!" Baise's actions left Basho and Squala momentarily stunned.
"It seems the person isn't an enemy," Melody noted, hearing the genuine joy in Baise's heart. She turned to Kurapika, whose expression was slightly complex, revealing a mix of emotions.
"Why are you here?" Baise beamed with the happiness of a young girl, a stark contrast to her mature and sophisticated demeanor.
"I missed you, so I came to see you," Morin said, wrapping an arm around Baise's waist. The fragrance from her body filled his senses, bringing a sense of peace and contentment. "I've wrapped up my affairs, so I came here as soon as I could."
As he spoke, Morin casually produced a small, ornate box with a Gilt edge, looking quite valuable. "This is a gift I prepared just for you."
Opening the box, Baise's eyes sparkled with happiness as it revealed a cat's eye-shaped emerald.
"Is that... the legendary royal treasure, the Glacken Ring, once worn by Queen Glacken?!" Basho exclaimed, recognizing the gem immediately.
"I've heard of it too..." Linssen swallowed hard. "I heard this ring was auctioned on the black market for 150 billion Jenny, and no one dared to buy it."
