Chapter 28: Chapter 28: Brewing Potion
After afternoon tea, Kael did not rush to begin his potion-making experiments. Instead, he summoned a magic book. Its cover proudly displayed the title: "Beginner's Guide to Transfiguration."
When Kael had returned to Hobbiton from Buckland, he had taken a detour north, visiting Hardbottle and Long Cleeve in the Northfarthing to check in. At Long Cleeve, he had obtained History of Magic, and at Hardbottle, he had acquired the Beginner's Guide to Transfiguration.
History of Magic was largely useless to Kael, serving only as a means to pass the time and learn about the wizarding world's past. But the Beginner's Guide to Transfiguration was different. As the primary Transfiguration textbook for first and second-year students at Hogwarts, its contents primarily covered basic Transfiguration, such as transfiguring everyday objects. What pleased Kael even more was that, besides Transfiguration spells, it also contained useful Charms like Aguamenti (the Water-Making Spell) and Orchideous (the Bouquet-Conjuring Spell), as well as Vanishing Spells.
Transfiguration, Kael knew, differed significantly from Charms. Charms could often be successfully cast with firm belief and raw magical energy. Transfiguration, however, was a delicate discipline that heavily tested imagination and magical control, making it inherently more difficult to master. The beginner stage primarily involved transfiguring inanimate objects into other inanimate objects, and, secondly, transforming living objects into inanimate ones. At the intermediate stage, one learned to transfigure animals, turning inanimate objects into living ones, or living objects into other living objects. The advanced stages even delved into human Transfiguration, culminating in the highest achievement: Animagus Transfiguration.
The Beginner's Guide to Transfiguration Kael now possessed only basic concepts, but for him, who was hungry for knowledge, it was a timely treasure. With the aid of his new wand, Kael found it surprisingly easy to cast some of the simplest Transfiguration spells. For instance, he successfully transfigured a small matchstick into a needle on his very first try. However, as the volume of the transfigured object increased, the difficulty and magical consumption also rose significantly.
"Feraverto!"
Kael cast a spell on the small guest room bed. The small wooden bed rapidly expanded and transformed into a luxurious, over-two-meter-long bed. The bedding on it also changed, becoming soft, comfortable velvet and silk. Kael nodded in satisfaction; now he no longer had to worry about his feet sticking out when he slept. He then turned to ask a gaping Bilbo, a smile playing on his lips, "Do you want me to transform your bed and bedding too?"
"Yes!" Bilbo snapped back to reality, his eyes sparkling as he nodded eagerly. This was even more wondrous than any magic he had witnessed before.
In the days following his return to Hobbiton, after mastering basic Transfiguration, Kael began preparing for his potion-making task. Potions, Kael knew, were a discipline unlike any other. As Professor Snape had so famously stated:
"You are here to learn the subtle science and exact art of potion-making. As there is little foolish wand-waving here, many of you will hardly believe this is magic. I don't expect you will really understand the beauty of the softly simmering cauldron with its shimmering fumes, the delicate power of liquids that creep through human veins, bewitching the mind, ensnaring the senses... I can teach you how to bottle fame, brew glory, even stopper death—if you aren't as big a bunch of dunderheads as I usually have to teach."
Kael wasn't sure if he was the "dunderhead" Professor Snape spoke of, but he knew that potions were incredibly important. If he could master this discipline, he would possess an invaluable means of self-preservation in Middle-earth. After all, potions possessed unique effects that spells could not always achieve. Many injuries that would be fatal to ordinary people could be instantly cured by taking a potion, making them lively and vigorous once more. There were also potions like Polyjuice Potion, which allowed one to transform into others undetectably; Veritaserum, which compelled truth; Felix Felicis, which brought luck; and even the fabled Elixir of Life.
The only challenge was that many ingredients for these magical Potions were not naturally found in Middle-earth. To create these miraculous concoctions, one would need to find suitable substitutes, a task usually reserved for a true Potion Master. However, these were advanced problems, too far in the future for Kael, who was, at present, barely a beginner in the art.
Magical Draughts and Potions contained only basic potion recipes, and the ingredients required for these were not overly specialized, meaning most could be sourced in Middle-earth. Kael's first true attempt at potion-making would be the simplest Potion for Boils, chosen as practice for a novice.
Inside the storeroom, Kael set up his silver cauldron and preheated it with a kerosene lamp placed underneath. He then carefully measured out six snake fangs and ground them into a fine powder with a mortar and pestle. After the cauldron had preheated for exactly one minute, he poured the powdered fangs into the cauldron to stir and boil. Waving his wand, the flame of the kerosene lamp under the cauldron swelled into a large fire. He heated it for ten seconds, then reduced it to a medium flame, and added four prepared slugs for steaming. Throughout this precise process, Kael followed the instructions in the book step by step. Only when the liquid in the cauldron boiled and began to emit thick steam did Kael extinguish the flame, allowing the concoction to stand for a moment. He then added two porcupine quills, stirring exactly five times clockwise with his wand. As he stirred, magic evenly and continuously diffused into the cauldron's liquid through the wand. The liquid gradually changed color, eventually turning a vibrant blue, while a stream of delicate pink smoke rose from its surface. At this step, the Potion for Boils was complete.
The Potion for Boils was not a complicated brew, but Kael was immensely satisfied with his immediate success. Using Transfiguration, he conjured a delicate crystal bottle, into which he carefully poured the brilliant blue potion.
"Is that it?" Bilbo, who had been quietly observing from the side, finally asked. He had been curious about Kael's potion-making process, and Kael had given him permission to watch. Now, seeing Kael miraculously create a blue potion from snake fangs, slugs, and porcupine quills, he was greatly astonished.
"Of course," Kael nodded with a smile, then handed him the potion bottle. "This is the Potion for Boils. It has a miraculous healing effect on boils. You can take it to someone with boils and try it." The Potion for Boils was a single-purpose potion, and Kael had only used it as a practice piece for his potion initiation, so he gave it to Bilbo without hesitation.
He then began to prepare for his next potion, once again choosing the Potion for Boils. This time, however, his purpose was different. For this next attempt, he used an unwanted iron pot from Bilbo's kitchen as a cauldron. He meticulously followed the Potion textbook step by step until he reached the stage of adding the porcupine quills. Instead of extinguishing the fire, Kael directly threw the quills into the violently boiling liquid. Instantly, the liquid in the pot erupted, emitting sour-smelling green fumes, accompanied by a sharp hissing sound. The green liquid reacted violently, rapidly corroding the bottom of the pot and splashing everywhere.
