Chapter 16: The Sokovian Shadow & Hydra's Reach

The grim news from Yelena had Adam pacing the small, tastefully minimalist apartment he now called his main safe house in New York. The intel wasn't just a whisper; it was a blaring siren in his meta-aware brain. 'The Castle' in Sokovia. Hydra. Human experimentation. He knew exactly what that meant: Baron Strucker, the Mind Stone, and the birth of the Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver as full-fledged, terrifyingly powerful threats. He had to accelerate their training, but also use their existing connection to the place.

Yelena's latest report had been chillingly precise. "The Castle isn't just a former Soviet-era stronghold, Adam. It's heavily fortified, deep underground, and the energy signatures Darcy picked up earlier? They're fluctuating, expanding. It's active. And I found Red Room insignias co-opted with a stylized octopus. Definitely Hydra. And based on what I overheard... they're calling it 'Project Insight' over there too. Not the helicarrier kind. Something... else."

Adam had felt a cold knot in his stomach. The Red Room, Hydra, Project Insight – the sheer audacity of it. Hydra truly was like a hydra, cutting off one head only for two more to grow.

He pulled up the Guild comms, specifically for Wanda and Pietro, who were still in their Sokovian safe house, undergoing their intensified training. "Wanda, Pietro. Status report. Are you ready for a field trip? A local one."

Wanda's holographic image appeared, looking more confident, her eyes clearer. Pietro, predictably, was a blur in the background before settling beside her. "We are ready, Adam. The new skills… they are powerful. What is it?"

"Good. Because this isn't just a training exercise anymore. Yelena's intel confirmed something major, right in your backyard. 'The Castle'. The old HYDRA base you probably heard whispers about, the one where… well, where they experimented on people. It's active. And it's worse than we thought."

Wanda's expression hardened, a flicker of that raw crimson power sparking around her fingers. Pietro tensed, his eyes narrowing. They knew what 'experimentation' meant. Their parents' deaths, the riots, the lingering fear in Sokovia.

"I need you two to investigate," Adam continued, his tone serious. "This isn't a direct assault. This is a recon mission. Get in, gather intel on what they're doing, who's there, what kind of tech. If you see Baron Strucker, or anything that looks like a glowing blue cube, you get out. No heroics. Understand?"

"We understand," Wanda said, her voice low. "For Sokovia."

"And for ourselves," Pietro added, a determined glint in his eye.

Adam nodded. "Exactly. This is about protecting yourselves, and protecting the world from what's festering in that place."

He opened the Guild Master Store. He didn't want them going in empty-handed, even if it was just recon. He still had a decent chunk of GP after the Maximoff training spree in the last chapter.

"I'm sending you some gear," Adam stated, the items appearing in their Guild storage. "An infiltration kit with some silent tools, mini-cameras, and wiretaps. And two custom stealth suits. They'll help you blend in, and give you a little protection. Remember, if you get caught, if it goes sideways, the mission is to extract. Your lives are paramount."

Wanda and Pietro acknowledged, the professional focus settling over them. They were still young, still raw, but they were learning fast. And the mission was personal for them, giving them an edge Adam couldn't give.

"Report back as soon as you have something," Adam concluded. "And be careful. Hydra plays dirty."

He watched their holographic images fade, a nervous hum in his chest. Sending them into a live Hydra nest, even for recon, felt like playing with fire. But it was fire they already knew, fire they understood. And it was essential. This was where the real fight began.
