[Orphanage Rooftop – Early Morning]
Astro stared at me, waiting. His usual laid-back expression had shifted into something more serious. Not judgmental—just… curious.
"So," he said, breaking the silence, "are you gonna tell me why you suddenly feel off? 'Cause I know I ain't crazy. You weren't like this yesterday."
I sighed, rubbing the back of my head. "Yeah… you're not crazy. It's just—" I hesitated. How the hell was I supposed to explain this?
Astro raised an eyebrow. "Just what?"
I exhaled sharply. "It's my LV."
He blinked. "Your what?"
"LV," I repeated, shifting my gaze to the city skyline. "It stands for 'Level of Violence."
Astro's posture straightened a little. "Okay… that sounds metal as hell, but I'm guessin' it ain't a good thing."
"It's not." I rolled my sleeve up, glancing at my palm as if the answer was written there. "LV isn't like a game level. It's not just about getting stronger. It's a measure of something else… something worse."
Astro frowned. "Go on."
I clenched my fist. "The more you kill, the higher it gets. And the higher it gets… the easier it becomes to do it again."
Astro didn't say anything for a second. His expression was unreadable. "So… wait. This LV thing actually changes you?"
I nodded. "Yeah. It messes with your head. Makes you care less. The first time's hard, but every time after that? It just gets easier." I swallowed. "And that's what scares me."
Astro whistled low. "Damn…" He ran a hand through his hair. "That explains it."
"Explains what?"
He looked at me, serious now. "Why you feel different."
I stiffened. "I'm sometimes surprised by how perceptive you are Astro."
He nodded. "Yeah. It ain't something I can explain in words, but… when I first met you, you had this vibe. Kinda like… I dunno, a storm that hasn't hit yet? It was intense, but contained. You were holdin' back." He crossed his arms. "But now? Feels like somethin' in you shifted. Like a door cracked open, and I got a peek at what's behind it."
I looked away, gripping my wrist. "…That's what I was afraid of."
Astro studied me, then shrugged. "Welp, guess that means we gotta make sure you don't turn into a murder machine, huh?"
I snorted. "That's the plan."
Astro smirked. "Good. 'Cause I really don't wanna have to kick your ass."
---
[Curiosity Strikes – Checking Astro]
For a moment, the conversation hung in the air. But something was nagging at me.
I'd never really checked anyone before..
But now? I wanted to see something.
I narrowed my eyes, focusing on Astro. The check button flickering to life.
> CHECK
---
[Astro Kugisaki]
Titles: Brother, The Angel
Quirk: None
Soul Status: Awakened
ATK: ??? | DEF: ???
LV: 1
An unpredictable fighter with a sharp instinct. Always ready to throw hands.
---
Huh.
His LV was still at 1. That was good. It meant he hadn't killed before.
But the fact that his ATK and DEF were unreadable? That was interesting.
"You're checkin' me right now, aren't you?"
I flinched slightly. "What—?"
Astro grinned. "Dude, I dunno how, but I felt that. It was like my skin got itchy for a sec."
I stared at him. "You felt me checking you?"
"Yep." He looked way too amused by this. "What'd you see?"
I hesitated before answering. "Your LV is 1. That's good."
He gave me a lazy thumbs-up. "Nice. That means I'm still a good boy, right?"
I rolled my eyes. "I guess."
"But what about the rest?" His grin widened. "I bet my stats are busted, huh?"
I frowned slightly. "Your ATK and DEF were unreadable."
That wiped the grin off his face. "Wait, for real?"
"Yeah."
Astro leaned back, looking up at the sky. "Huh. That's… kinda weird."
"You got any idea why?"
He tapped his chin. "Dunno. I have been trainin' a lot lately, but nothin' crazy. Maybe it's 'cause I don't fight the way normal people do? I don't actually have a quirk, just...magic."
I considered that. "Could be."
Astro smirked again. "Or maybe I'm just built different."
I sighed. "Yeah, yeah, you're special, I get it."
He laughed, clapping me on the back. "Damn right."
The morning sun was climbing higher now, casting a golden glow over the orphanage. The city was waking up.
I slipped the cracked wristwatch back into my pocket.
Astro stretched, letting out a satisfied sigh. "Welp, I dunno about you, but I need some food in me. You comin'?"
I stood up, shoving my hands into my hoodie pockets. "Yeah. I'll be there in a sec."
Astro nodded. "Cool. But hey—one more thing."
I raised an eyebrow. "What?"
He looked at me, his expression serious again. "You're not alone in this, y'know."
I stiffened slightly.
Astro smirked. "So don't go pullin' any 'tragic lone wolf' crap, got it?"
I snorted. "No promises."
"Uh-huh. We'll see." He gave me a lazy salute before heading inside.
I stayed behind for a few more moments, letting the wind carry away some of the weight on my shoulders.
LV 2.
It wasn't much. But it was the start of something.
And I needed to make damn sure it didn't climb any higher.
[A few days later]
[Toga's Apartment – Late Afternoon]
Me and Astro stood outside the apartment door, bags of ice cream in hand. We had spent a good amount of money on this place after finding out about Toga's situation. No way were we letting her live in some with ungrateful parents or in a rundown hideout when we had the cash to fix that, hence our side jobs and a certain clean freak. We can thank Astro and his big mouth for that one.
Astro knocked on the door. "Oi, Toga! Open up before your ice cream melts!"
There was a brief silence. Then—
THUMP THUMP THUMP—the sound of someone sprinting toward the door.
It slammed open, revealing a very excited Himiko Toga. Her golden eyes sparkled when she saw us, and her mouth curled into a mischievous grin. "You brought me ice cream? Awww, you guys are the best!"
She reached for the bag, but I smirked, lifting it just out of reach. "Not so fast, kitty. You gotta earn it."
Toga's smile twitched. "What?"
I snapped my fingers, and the bag of ice cream vanished, reappearing behind me in a little cloud of blue aura.
Toga blinked. Then her catlike grin returned. "Oooooh, magic tricks now, huh?"
Astro groaned. "Oh no. Here we go…"
Toga crouched slightly, eyes glinting with playful menace. "Gimme!" She lunged at me.
I teleported behind her. "Too slow."
She spun around, swiping playfully, but I dodged effortlessly, teleporting every time she got close. "C'mon, Toga, is that all you got?"
Her fangs flashed as she pouted. "You're so annoying!"
Astro shook his head, stepping past us into the apartment. "I'm grabbin' a drink. Y'all can flirt—I mean fight—out here."
Toga and I both paused.
I narrowed my eyes. "What was that, Astro?"
He smirked. "Nothin'~"
Iruma: "Says the one that mmph!?" Astro clamped my mouth shut. His eerie smile saying to 'Shut the hell up' before he removed his hand from my mouth and went inside.
Toga giggled, her pout vanishing. "Hurry up and gimme my ice cream, dummy!"
I sighed, snapping my fingers again to make the bag reappear in her hands. "Fine, fine. But next time? You better be quicker."
Toga stuck her tongue out before happily skipping inside.
[A few mins later...]
[Ice Cream & A New Sister]
Not long after, we were sitting in the living room, eating our ice cream when the door burst open.
"MIIIIINNNAAAAAA'S HERE!"
A pink blur tackled Toga in a hug.
Toga yelped, almost dropping her ice cream. "Wha—?! Who—?!"
Mina grinned at her. "Hi, new sister!"
Toga's brain short-circuited. "S-Sister?! But we just met!"
Mina waved a hand dismissively. "Pfft, details! Any girl cool enough to hang with these two idiots is automatically my sister!"
Toga blinked, looking at me and Astro as if to confirm this was actually happening.
Astro just shrugged. "She's serious."
I grinned. "Congrats, Toga. You're officially part of the family now."
Toga hesitated, staring at Mina. "You're… okay with me? Just like that?"
Mina tilted her head. "Uh, yeah? Why wouldn't I be?"
Toga fidgeted, rubbing her arm. "Y'know… 'cause of my fangs and my… uh… quirk. People usually freak out when they see me."
Mina scoffed. "Pshh, girl, please. I'm pink. You think I care about stuff like that?"
Toga stared at her for a moment. Then, slowly, a smile crept onto her face. A real one.
Mina beamed. "Sooooo, what do you do for fun? Spill the tea! I need to know everything!"
The two of them immediately launched into a chaotic conversation about girl stuff—something about fashion, blood types, and which pro heroes were the hottest.
Me and Astro exchanged glances.
He smirked. "Welp. That happened."
I chuckled. "Yup."
Astro stood up, stretching. "C'mon. Let's hit the field. I'm feelin' a spar."
I smirked. "Oh? You sure you can handle me?"
Astro grinned. "Oh, it's like that now? Alright, bet."
---
[Shortcut to the Training Field]
Rather than walking, I grabbed Astro's shoulder and snapped my fingers. In an instant, the cozy apartment vanished, replaced by the wide-open field of the park where we always trained. The smell of grass, the cool breeze, the faint sounds of distant city life—this was our spot.
Astro rolled his shoulders, already stretching. "Damn. Never gonna get used to how fast you do that."
I cracked my knuckles. "You better get used to it, 'cause I ain't stoppin'."
The sun hung low in the sky, casting long shadows across the field. The grass beneath our feet barely had time to settle before energy crackled in the air between us.
Astro took his stance, golden energy flickering around his fists. "No holdin' back, yeah?"
I summoned a set of blue bones, twirling them in my hands, my left eye flickering with raw magic. "Wouldn't dream of it."
The moment our feet touched the soft grass, the familiar energy of our usual battleground settled around us. The air crackled with anticipation, the golden hues of the late afternoon sun casting long shadows behind us.
Astro cracked his knuckles, rolling his neck. "You sure you're ready for this, Iruma?"
I smirked, spinning a glowing blue bone in my hand before making it vanish. "Always."
A brief silence. The tension thickened.
Then—
Astro moved first.
With a sharp exhale, his feet dug into the grass, and in an instant, he was gone—a golden blur cutting through the space between us. My eyes barely caught the movement before—BOOM!
A golden fist shot toward my gut.
I teleported a few steps back just in time, barely avoiding the shockwave that sent dust and grass flying. "Fast."
Astro grinned. "You ain't seen fast yet."
Before my feet could fully plant themselves, his golden energy flared again, and he appeared behind me in a flash step.
Damn, that's new.
I spun, summoning a bone to parry, but—CRACK!
His kick shattered it, sending fragments flying.
I skidded back, but before I could recover, he was already on me again, his movements seamless. Left jab—right hook—uppercut—I barely dodged each one, bending with inhuman flexibility, my reflexes pushed to their peak.
Then, my turn.
"My move."
I teleported above him this time, summoning a set of Gaster Blasters in a perfect arc. Their glowing blue maws opened wide, humming with immense power.
Astro looked up just in time. "Oh, shi—"
"Fire!"
The blasters unleashed a blinding barrage of magical beams, burning the air itself.
BOOM! The explosion of raw magic sent shockwaves through the field, grass flattened under its force. Smoke engulfed the area.
I hovered slightly in the air, my glowing blue eye scanning through the dust cloud. No way that took him down.
Then—
From the smoke, golden streaks shot out in a rapid spiral, each one cutting through the air like golden lightning bolts.
Golden Starburst.
Astro's counter.
Tch!
I raised a bone barrier, but his attacks weren't meant to pierce—it was distraction.
The real threat was him.
I saw it too late—Astro was already behind me.
His golden fist smashed into my back.
BAM!
My vision blurred as I rocketed toward the ground, slamming into the grass with a heavy impact that cracked the earth beneath me. Dust shot up in a circle.
For a moment, silence.
Then—
A chuckle.
"Damn, Astro. You really went for my spine, huh?" I muttered, sitting up with a smirk.
Astro landed a few feet away, stretching his arms. "Pfft. You'll live."
My turn.
I snapped my fingers.
In an instant, the ground itself glowed blue beneath him.
His eyes widened. "Wait—"
"Welcome to the Bone Zone."
A hundred glowing blue bones erupted from the ground beneath him, spiraling in unpredictable patterns. Each one homed in on his movements, forcing him into a constant dodge.
Astro flipped and twisted midair, barely evading the sharp projectiles, his golden aura flickering wildly as he tried to outmaneuver them.
I grinned. "Not bad. But let's turn it up a notch."
With a flick of my wrist, the bones turned orange.
Astro cursed.
"MOVE OR GET HIT!"
His body obeyed before his brain did—he dove forward, narrowly dodging an orange spike that shot up from the ground.
But I wasn't done.
I teleported directly into his path.
His eyes widened. "Oh, you bastard—"
I grabbed his wrist and twisted, flipping him midair.
With a controlled motion, I slammed him down—but he used his golden energy as a cushion, the impact barely affecting him.
He retaliated immediately, kicking off the ground and delivering a brutal elbow strike to my chest.
CRACK!
I staggered back, winded.
He grinned. "Gotcha."
Then—
I vanished.
His smirk faded. "...Shit."
"Behind you."
BAM!
My blazing blue fist connected with his jaw, sending him flying back.
Astro hit the ground, but he flipped mid-roll, landing on his feet, golden energy still flaring.
For a moment, we both just stood there, panting, grinning, magic crackling around us.
Neither of us had gone all out. But this? This was fun.
Astro wiped his mouth. "Alright. I'll admit it." He rolled his shoulders, still grinning. "That hurt."
I smirked. "You'll live."
We both burst into laughter.
A while later, we were lying on the grass, staring at the sky, completely exhausted. Our magic had dimmed, the golden and blue auras fading into the cooling evening air.
Astro let out a breath. "Damn. You really don't let up."
I chuckled. "Right back at ya, man. You're gettin' faster."
He turned his head toward me. "Yeah? You think so?"
I nodded. "Definitely. That golden flash step? That's new. And dangerous."
Astro grinned. "I gotta keep up with you somehow."
A comfortable silence settled between us.
Then—
"Toga and Mina are definitely gonna make fun of us for this, huh?"
I groaned. "Oh, absolutely."
Astro sighed dramatically. "Mina's gonna call us 'battle junkies' again."
I smirked. "She's not wrong."
We both chuckled.
Another day. Another spar. Another reminder that no matter how strong we got, we'd always push each other forward. Plus Ultra and all that jazz.
And honestly? I wouldn't have it any other way.
[Morning – Orphanage Room]
The soft morning light crept through the blinds, painting the room in a warm glow. I groggily opened my eyes, still half-asleep, when I heard a familiar hum.
Astro, still in his pajamas, was floating lazily around the room using his golden energy wings, avoiding the hassle of actually walking. His hair was a mess, and he had the tired look of someone who wasn't ready to face the day.
I, on the other hand, was using my telekinesis to brush my teeth without lifting a finger, my other hand scratching my head as I sat up in bed. Too early for this.
"Yo, Iruma," Astro mumbled, yawning mid-sentence. "Why do mornings exist?"
I spat out the toothpaste with a smirk. "To remind you that sleep is a luxury we can't afford."
Astro groaned, flipping midair before landing on his bed. "Let's just go back to sleep."
"Yeah, no. You're not skipping school again."
"Ugh, fine."
We forced ourselves up, got dressed (mostly using magic to make things easier), and finally dragged ourselves out of our shared room and into the common area.
Then we froze.
[Common Room]
The entire room was drenched in Valentine's Day decorations—pink and red banners, heart-shaped balloons, and an overwhelming smell of chocolates and roses. It was like Cupid himself had thrown up in here.
I blinked. "…Oh."
Astro stared. "Wait. Is it—?"
Then it hit us.
We totally forgot it was Valentine's Day.
I shrugged. "Eh, whatever." It wasn't like I had a Valentine anyway.
Astro, on the other hand, looked like he had just remembered something important.
His face lit up, and he muttered under his breath, "Shit, I gotta find Toga."
I smirked. "Love-struck dummy."
Ignoring me, Astro pulled out the gifts he had prepared in advance. A blood-red pendant and a cool-colored knife with glowing red cracks—the perfect combination for someone as skilled (and knife-obsessed) as Toga. He also had a few chocolates and teddy bears to round it out.
I watched him fidget with the packaging and sighed. "Come on, let's just get to school before you pass out from nerves."
---
[Astro's POV – Entering Class]
Walking into class, I was immediately greeted by the overwhelming sight of students exchanging gifts, giggling, and gushing over love letters.
Valentine's Day fever was in full swing.
I casually made my way to my desk, hands in my pockets, when a few students waved.
"Yo, Astro! Happy Valentine's!"
I gave a nod. "Same to you guys."
A couple of my friends—Luke, Nino, and Daima—were already gathered at their usual spot. Nino was excitedly showing off the chocolates he got, Daima was laughing at a goofy Valentine's card, and Luke was just happy for everyone.
"Bro, you got anyone special today?" Luke asked with a grin.
I scratched the back of my head. "Uh… maybe."
Kami whistled. "Ooooh, sounds like someone's got a Valentine!"
Before I could respond, a few girls passed by and not-so-subtly placed letters and small gifts on my desk.
I sighed. "Here we go again."
I picked up one of the letters and read it purely out of boredom. They were all basically the same—gushing about how "cool" or "handsome" I was, how they admired me from afar, how they wished I'd give them a chance, blah blah blah.
Honestly? I wasn't interested, but the free chocolates and small gifts were a nice bonus.
Luke nudged me. "So? Gonna respond to any of 'em?"
I smirked, tossing the letters aside. "Nah. Got my eye on someone else."
The guys whistled and teased, but I ignored them.
I was too focused on the real Valentine I cared about.
---
[Iruma's POV – Dealing with the Letters]
Meanwhile, I was having my own problems.
I had barely walked into class when I was met with a mountain of letters.
Some were neatly stacked on my desk, some were stuffed into my bag, and some were even magically placed in front of me as I walked in.
…Seriously?
With a sigh, I sat down, grabbed the letters, and tossed them straight into the trash.
I wasn't in the mood for sappy confessions or dramatic declarations of love.
But the chocolates and gifts?
Oh, I kept those.
I unwrapped a chocolate bar and popped a piece into my mouth, leaning back in my chair. "At least they're useful for something."
A few students looked horrified at how casually I dismissed them. Others whispered to each other, probably calling me cold or heartless.
Did I care?
Not in the slightest.
---
[Astro's POV – Giving Toga Her Gifts]
Lunchtime rolled around faster than expected.
With my heart pounding, I made my way to Toga, clutching the carefully wrapped gifts in my hands.
She was sitting at her usual spot, lazily kicking her feet while sipping a juice box. The second she saw me approaching, her cat-like golden eyes lit up.
"Astro~!" she sang, tilting her head. "You look nervous. Something wrong?"
I swallowed hard. "Uh… no, just, uh… here."
I awkwardly shoved the gifts at her.
Toga blinked before eagerly grabbing them. "Ooooh~ what's this?!"
She unwrapped the pendant first, holding it up to the light. The deep blood-red color shimmered, and she gasped in delight.
Her fingers traced the knife next, eyes widening at the crimson cracks running through the metal. She held it like it was the most precious thing in the world.
Her face broke into a huge grin. "Astro! These are amazing!"
She immediately clipped the pendant around her neck before twirling the knife in her hands. "It feels perfect~!"
Then—
Before I could react, she stood on her tiptoes and kissed me on the cheek.
A soft, warm press of her lips.
I froze.
My brain short-circuited.
When she pulled back, she giggled at my stunned expression. That smile almost making me faint. "Happy Valentine's, Astro~!"
I barely managed to stammer out, "Y-you too."
Holy shit.
[Back at the Orphanage]
That night, back in our room, I was still in a daze.
Iruma snickered, arms crossed. "Dude, you've been touching your cheek for an hour."
I grinned like an idiot. "I'm never washing my face again."
Iruma burst out laughing. "Oh hell no, we're not doing this."
He grabbed me and physically dragged me to the sink.
I fought back. "NOOOO!"
"YES."
"YOU CAN'T MAKE ME."
"ASTRO, GET YOUR ASS IN THE SINK."
---
And so, my perfect Valentine's Day ended with a forced face wash.
But honestly?
It was totally worth it.
