Chapter 72: Chapter 72: The Reason Has Arrived
A voice echoed in everyone's mind, drawing their curiosity.
In front of Old Feng and Feng Tian, where there had previously been nothing but empty ground, a slender figure now stood.
The figure glared at the shinobi, hands radiating a translucent yet visible energy.
Old Feng and Feng Tian let out a sigh of relief at the sight. Their bodies, no longer able to hold up under the stress, collapsed onto the ground as they gasped for breath.
Just moments ago, they had truly believed they were about to die. The kunai had been only a few meters away—at a shinobi's speed, they would have been dead in the next instant.
Thank goodness, thank goodness Gardevoir had arrived in time.
Meanwhile, the expressions of the opposing shinobi changed dramatically. Unlike Old Feng and Feng Tian, their faces were filled with tension.
They widened their eyes in shock as they watched Gardevoir easily block their attacks and even speak. A hint of fear crept into their expressions.
However, there was no time to dwell on it. The lead shinobi scowled at Gardevoir and spoke in a grave tone. "Are you really going to stand against us?"
"Hmph!"
With a cold snort, Gardevoir swung her arm, sending the shinobi flying. Her expression darkened. "That's what we should be asking you. Ryo already said that if you don't give him a proper explanation, he'll personally pay Root a visit."
Previously, Ryo had been waiting for a valid reason to make a move. And now, the reason had come.
Yet, these Root shinobi still dared to act as if they had the upper hand. Even Gardevoir couldn't contain her anger.
The shinobi who had been flung away slowly picked themselves up from the ground, their eyes filled with disbelief.
They had known they weren't a match, but they hadn't expected the gap to be this enormous.
After all, they were all Jōnin.
To be struck down so easily upon their arrival—how could they accept this?
But now wasn't the time for pride. The squad leader among them stepped forward once more. "Lady Gardevoir, this was our mistake. We will leave now. I will also relay your words to Lord Danzō."
They had no choice. With Gardevoir present, completing their mission to eliminate Old Feng and Feng Tian was impossible. Their only option was to withdraw for now.
However, just as they turned to leave, an invisible wall appeared in their path, blocking their retreat.
Then, Gardevoir's voice rang out once again.
"I can't let you go just yet. You'll have to wait here until Ryo arrives."
"Lady Gardevoir, we—"
The shinobi tried to protest, but before he could finish his sentence, a tremendous pressure suddenly weighed down on him.
Boom!
With a loud crash, he was forced to the ground, unable to speak another word.
"Hmph."
Gardevoir let out another cold snort. "Wait until Ryo arrives before saying anything else."
The surrounding crowd watched in stunned silence, their jaws practically hitting the ground.
Even Old Feng and Feng Tian struggled to believe what they had just witnessed.
The shinobi had been so fast that they couldn't even track their movements.
Yet Gardevoir had suppressed them effortlessly?
"Wait a second—"
Suddenly, Old Feng snapped out of his shock, his eyes widening in disbelief. "You—you—did you just talk?"
Moments ago, he had been too focused on surviving to process anything else.
But now that he had time to think, he was utterly stunned.
Pokémon could talk? That was something he had never even imagined!
Gardevoir shot him a glance before rolling her eyes, clearly uninterested in responding.
Old Feng, however, was unfazed. He turned to his son. "Son, did she just speak?"
Feng Tian nodded but didn't say a word. Instead, he gazed at Gardevoir with an expression filled with admiration.
That overwhelming power had left a deep impression on him.
"Rattata!"
"Teddiursa!"
At that moment, Rattata and Teddiursa slowly approached Gardevoir, looking up at her with pleading expressions.
They gestured toward the shinobi who were still pinned down by Psychic energy.
Gardevoir chuckled at their reaction and gently patted their heads. "Alright. Once Ryo arrives, we'll get revenge for you."
Hearing this, the two Pokémon nodded in satisfaction, their pitiful expressions quickly vanishing.
Whoosh!
Boom!
The next second, a gust of wind howled through the air as something crashed into the ground, sending a shockwave through the earth and kicking up a cloud of dust.
"Cough, cough! Dragonite, could you land a little softer? If I had known, I would've just come with Gardevoir."
"Roooooar~"
As the dust settled, Ryo and Dragonite emerged, revealing themselves to the crowd.
"Ryo, you're here!"
"Boss Ryo, you finally arrived!"
"Rattata!"
"Teddiursa!"
Hearing the commotion, Ryo turned toward the voices.
Gardevoir greeted him with a nod, while Rattata and Teddiursa ran up to him excitedly.
Meanwhile, Old Feng sat to the side, sniffling and looking pitifully at Ryo, as if he had suffered the greatest injustice in the world.
Cough, cough!
Ryo caught the two Pokémon mid-leap and let out an awkward cough. "Old Feng, aren't things just fine now?"
He hadn't expected Root's shinobi to target Old Feng and Feng Tian so soon after they had left his place.
Even he had almost failed to react in time.
Old Feng shot him a speechless look but chose not to say anything more.
"Wait a second!"
Suddenly, a voice from the crowd rang out. It was Old Wang, his eyes lighting up in realization.
"That's the guy from a few days ago! The one who told us about Pokémon!"
"Yeah! I remember now—I actually went to check it out back then!"
"That's right! And that Pokémon next to him is the same one he had before!"
"I remember too! Back then, I didn't believe it. I thought, 'How could something that looks so human be a Pokémon?'"
As Old Wang spoke, the people around him gradually began to remember.
Ryo, hearing the discussion, smiled and nodded before turning his gaze toward the shinobi still trapped under Gardevoir's power.
"You lot…"
His eyes turned icy, his tone sharp and filled with fury.
"What you did just now… was far too excessive."
Hearing his words, Gardevoir removed her Psychic hold, allowing the Root shinobi to regain control of their bodies.
Cough, cough!
The lead shinobi coughed as he stood back up, looking at Ryo with a serious expression.
"Boss Ryo, if anyone is being excessive here, it's you. You should already understand the reason behind our actions."
As a shinobi, he knew exactly what consequences would arise if Pokémon became widespread among ordinary civilians.
