Chapter 90: Chapter 90: Slaking's Strike
"Hahaha!"
Kankurō burst into laughter, then his expression turned cold as he glared at Konohamaru. "Brat, you must have a death wish."
Without wasting any more words, he raised his kunai and stabbed toward Konohamaru.
Even Temari was momentarily stunned. Is he really going to do it without hesitation?
"You—stop!"
Naruto arrived just in time, eyes wide as he shouted.
But before he could even finish his sentence, the Slaking lying beside Konohamaru suddenly sprang up and threw a punch at Kankurō.
The speed of the attack was so fast that Kankurō couldn't even react. He could only watch in shock as the fist closed in on him.
BAM!
In the next instant, Slaking's fist landed squarely on Kankurō's face.
Kankurō released Konohamaru as he was sent flying backward, slamming onto the ground and remaining motionless for a moment.
Meanwhile, Slaking, having completed its attack, lazily flopped back onto the ground, completely ignoring Konohamaru, who fell to the ground with a thud.
"Ow—"
Konohamaru rubbed his backside but grinned. "Slaking, you're amazing!"
He felt incredibly lucky that he had secretly taken his grandfather's Poké Ball before heading out. Otherwise, he would have been in serious trouble.
Hearing Konohamaru's words, Temari snapped out of her shock. She quickly stepped back, gripping her fan tightly as she eyed the situation warily.
"What… what the hell is that?"
She couldn't believe that the seemingly lazy creature had sent Kankurō flying with just one punch.
Cough, cough—
Kankurō slowly got up, his face contorted with anger. "Damn brat, you're dead!"
He reached for the bandaged box on his back.
"Who are you people, and why are you in Konoha?"
Naruto and Sakura stepped forward, positioning themselves in front of Konohamaru. Their eyes were serious as they faced Temari and Kankurō.
"Naruto-nii-san, you're here! That guy was going to kill me!"
Seeing Naruto, Konohamaru was first relieved, then immediately burst into tears, crying and sniffling dramatically.
Cough, cough—
At that moment, Temari lowered her fan and coughed lightly. "Wait, this is a misunderstanding. We're from the Sand Village, here for the Chūnin Exams."
"The Chūnin Exams?"
Naruto and Sakura were momentarily taken aback.
"Temari, why are you explaining so much? Let's just kill them."
Naruto's expression darkened with anger as he glared at Kankurō. "Damn it, I'm going to teach you a lesson!"
He reached for his Poké Ball.
Seeing this, Temari frowned slightly. She hadn't forgotten that Slaking had emerged from a similar ball just moments ago.
She turned to warn Kankurō—
But before she could say anything, a voice rang out.
"What are you doing? Do you want to die?"
The moment they heard that voice, both Temari and Kankurō froze in place.
Kankurō quickly turned around. "I-I'm sorry! I was just handling something! I'll kill them right away!"
Naruto and Sakura noticed his sudden shift in attitude and turned toward the source of the voice.
Perched on a tree in the distance was a boy with a kanji for "love" carved into his forehead, a gourd strapped to his back.
Upon seeing him, Naruto and Sakura's expressions became grave.
Even from a distance, Gaara's presence radiated bloodlust—he didn't feel like a person, but a beast driven by an insatiable thirst for killing.
Whoosh—
Suddenly, from another tree, Sasuke appeared, tossing a small rock straight at Gaara.
Gaara didn't move an inch.
Just as the stone was about to hit him, the sand from his gourd shot out like it had a will of its own, effortlessly blocking the attack.
"Interesting. What's your name?"
Sasuke remained silent, staring coldly at Gaara.
But before he could respond, Naruto blurted out, "Hah! The great me is Uzumaki Naruto! Remember that!"
The moment he said that, the entire area went silent.
Everyone turned to stare at Naruto like he was an idiot.
Gaara's interest instantly faded. He cast a glance at Temari and Kankurō before looking back at Sasuke.
"I'll remember you. During the Chūnin Exams, I'll kill you."
With that, he vanished.
Temari and Kankurō didn't dare linger and quickly followed.
As she left, Temari glanced back at Slaking and the Poké Ball in Naruto's hand, her mind filled with curiosity.
"Tch, I'll make sure to deal with you later," Naruto muttered as he put his Poké Ball away.
"Idiot!"
Sakura rolled her eyes and smacked Naruto.
"Why did you even introduce yourself?! That was so embarrassing!"
Naruto scratched his head, unsure what he had done wrong.
At that moment, Kakashi appeared.
"Ah, good, you're all here. I was just about to go looking for you. Come with me—I have something to discuss."
Naruto and the others nodded and left with Kakashi after saying goodbye to Konohamaru and his friends.
—
Meanwhile, at a lodging house, Gaara and his team regrouped.
Sitting on a chair, Temari looked serious. "Konoha isn't as simple as it seems."
Kankurō scoffed. "What's so special about it? If we hadn't left, I could've killed those guys easily."
The room suddenly turned ice-cold.
A moment later, Gaara's voice rang out.
"Are you questioning me?"
Kankurō immediately tensed. "N-No! I wouldn't dare!"
Gaara merely scoffed and turned his gaze toward the village outside the window.
Creak—
At that moment, the door opened, and Baki walked in.
"Well? What do you think of Konoha so far?"
The three turned toward him.
Temari was the first to speak. "We don't know much yet, but… those creatures that come out of those balls—they seem unusual."
"Tch."
Kankurō crossed his arms. "What's so special about them? If you hadn't called out to me, I could've dodged that hit easily."
Even though he said that, his expression remained wary.
Baki nodded, then looked at Gaara.
"And you? What do you think?"
