Chapter 14: Chapter 14: The Sword Without a Master
Echigo Province – Kasugayama Castle, Year 8 of Tenbun (1539 AD)
For the first time in his life, Yuki did not have an answer.
"Then who do you fight for?"
Uesugi Kenshin's words echoed in his mind.
Takeda Harunobu had never asked him such a question.
Because to Harunobu—
Yuki was simply a blade.
A tool to cut down his enemies.
But here, standing before the Dragon of Echigo—
For the first time, he was forced to ask himself:
"Am I just a sword?"
"Or am I something more?"
"You hesitate."
Kenshin studied Yuki carefully.
"That means you already know the truth."
Yuki remained silent.
Because he did know.
But he did not want to admit it.
A sword without a master is meaningless.
A warrior without a cause is already dead.
And he—
He had left his master behind.
So what did that make him?
Nothing.
"I do not hesitate."
Yuki's voice was cold.
"A sword does not think. It simply kills."
Kenshin smiled faintly.
"Then prove it."
"Raise your blade against me."
Yuki's hand instinctively went to his sword.
His body moved before his mind could object.
Kenshin stood completely still.
Unarmed.
Defenseless.
He was giving Yuki the first move.
"Strike me down, demon child."
"Show me if you are truly nothing more than a weapon."
The air grew heavy.
Yuki tightened his grip.
His blade whispered through the air—
And stopped.
Kenshin did not move.
Did not blink.
He simply watched.
Yuki's blade hovered inches from his throat.
But he could not swing.
Not because of fear.
Not because of weakness.
But because, in that moment—
He had hesitated.
For the first time in his life.
He had chosen not to kill.
Kenshin's eyes softened.
"So you are not just a sword after all."
The words struck deeper than any blade.
And in that moment—
Yuki felt something he had never felt before.
Doubt.
Kenshin turned, walking away.
"I will not force you to stay."
"But if you truly wish to find your own answer…"
"Then walk with me for a little longer."
The candlelight flickered.
Yuki's grip on his sword loosened.
And for the first time—
He did not know whether to sheath it or let it fall.
Because for the first time—
He did not know who he was.
And so—
He followed Kenshin.
Not as a sword.
Not as a weapon.
But as something else entirely.
[Fated Death: Progressing.]You have hesitated for the first time. You have begun to question your own identity.Your fate has changed… but death still looms ahead.
