Ch. 43
Chapter 43: The Two Great Weapons of the Investigators
“Training is over, get back here now!”
The so-called grouping up, cooperating, and looking out for each other was only a tacit glance, quickly interrupted by a gruff voice:
“You’re not investigators yet, don’t act so lazy!”
Everyone hurried back to the training room and saw that the staff had already placed black leather cases one after another on the table.
The instructor stood with his hands behind his back, speaking coldly to everyone:
“Now, your training is complete, and your team assignments have also been arranged!”
“From this point on, each of you only answers to your own operations captain or to the investigator who requisitioned you. Always stand by for orders.”
“Each group has different arrangements.”
“Groups D1 and D2 have no operations captain. They form independent teams, do not need to remain at the base, and will return to society after training. They will receive orders directly from the Disaster Management Bureau and will be independently evaluated based on the tasks they complete.”
“Groups D3 and D4 will work in pairs. They are to serve at the Disaster Management Bureau for four days each week. The rest of the time, they do not need to stay at the base, but must remain alert and respond immediately when assigned a task.”
“Groups D5 and D6, after training, may not leave. They must remain at the base and stand by for orders at any time.”
“But whether you stay at the base for centralized training or are allowed to leave and act freely, none of you may leak any information about the base.”
“Each violation of the Operational Code will result in demotion—first to Groups D5 or D6, remaining at the base, or directly to Group D7, permanently losing your personal freedom.”
“Is that clear?”
“……”
The reaction below was far less enthusiastic than expected.
Every face showed a strange expression—why were the treatment differences between groups so drastic?
Was there already such a clear hierarchy right after entering the Disaster Management Bureau?
Especially for Groups D5 and D6—they immediately lost their right to move freely. How was this any different from being imprisoned?
Was one’s status in the Disaster Management Bureau directly tied to their freedom?
“Very good.”
The instructor nodded in satisfaction and then swept his gaze across the black cases on the table, saying, “Operations personnel can be considered half-investigators. Especially Groups D1 and D2, who are already regarded as intern investigators.”
“And now I can tell you this:”
“Investigators are those responsible for eliminating all the unnatural entities that shouldn’t exist in reality, cutting off their spread. Even those who believe in the existence of these entities are considered part of that spread—and must also be eliminated.”
“And as investigation personnel, you each carry two great weapons at all times.”
“Inside these cases are those two great weapons, which will soon be issued to you. Consider them your graduation gift from the training institution!”
“……”
“Weapons—are they guns?”
Recalling the items that had been taken away after the assessment mission, Han Su’s heart stirred slightly.
At that moment, the instructor casually opened one of the cases and turned it toward everyone, displaying its contents one by one: “This is for protecting your safety and, when necessary, subduing enemies or other such supernatural entities…”
While speaking, he picked up a black object and pressed a button. Instantly, crackling sounds erupted from the tip.
Even his voice carried a hint of excitement: “Thunder 101 High-Voltage Baton, delivering a restricted-class 20,000KV electric shock to instantly paralyze the target, combined with 4W high-intensity lighting and 110dB deterrent alarm.”
“Three-in-one self-defense design, suitable for residential security guards, slum families, wilderness freight drivers, and bizarre investigators. Constructed with relic-metal composite structure, only 700g and easy to carry, fully charged it can last 36 hours.”
“From now on, I require you to carry it with you at all times!”
“……”
Hearing this, everyone’s expressions collapsed instantly—Damn it, after all that talk, you’re giving us an electric baton?
“We finally get to see it…”
Amid the stunned expressions, Crow beside him muttered in awe, “The exclusive weapon of investigators—the so-called Sword of Mystery, a high-lethality weapon.”
“This crap is the investigators’ exclusive weapon?”
Han Su glanced at her.
They had just returned together, and she was now standing beside him. “In the assessment mission before, they at least gave us a gun. Now that we’re officially hired, they hand us a baton?”
“I don’t really get it either...”
Crow seemed a bit embarrassed as she softly explained, “My aunt once told me, true investigators disdain the use of guns. They believe guns are an outdated and brutish weapon based on low logic.”
“First, guns are too noisy. Even with a suppressor, the sound is still too conspicuous.”
“Second, when you use a gun against an enemy, it usually means you’ve also exposed yourself to their line of sight. That’s a massive flaw in battles on the mysterious side.”
“So among the investigators I know, very few are regularly armed with guns.”
“Of course, once you reach the level of an investigator, applying to carry a firearm is an easy task. It’s just that writing a report for every bullet spent is too troublesome.”
“……”
‘She’s actually being serious?’
Han Su felt slightly surprised.
At least for now, he still found it hard to grasp how an electric baton could outweigh a gun in importance.
However, putting himself in that situation—if he were still in the dark castle—it made a bit more sense. In that place, facing so many monsters, the role of an electric baton and a firearm didn’t seem so different.
Although, he still hadn’t experienced what it felt like to blast monsters with a machine gun.
“Then, what is the second great weapon?”
The other trainees wore expressions not much different from Han Su’s—somewhat confused and disappointed—but someone still mustered the spirit to ask.
“That would be this identification badge!”
The instructor above raised a black-covered ID and displayed it to everyone, speaking in a deep voice: “This badge carries the steel seal of the Disaster Management Bureau. You must carry it with you at all times, but also be extremely cautious—never let outsiders see it easily.”
“At critical moments—that is, when you receive an emergency mission or face a sudden situation requiring action—that’s when you present this badge.”
“Once this badge is presented, you will possess temporary legal immunity!”
“……”
At first, the group still looked somewhat disappointed upon seeing the badge. But upon hearing this sentence, someone finally showed interest and asked, “Legal immunity... what exactly does that mean?”
The instructor glanced at him and said, “Running a red light without penalty!”
Everyone was stunned: “Eh?”
“So that means...”
Below, a bespectacled trainee with golden frames spoke slowly, deep in thought: “By the same logic, killing wouldn’t be illegal either?”
The instructor exhaled slowly and nodded. “Correct!”
Upon hearing this, a buzz erupted below as the trainees broke into excited discussion, each with a look of astonishment on their face.
“But it’s only immunity from conventional societal laws!”
The instructor raised his voice, his expression serious as he cautioned: “Once this badge is presented, you are only bound by the internal regulations of the Disaster Management Bureau. Of course, you can run red lights or kill outside.”
“However, everything you do outside must be written in a report and explained upon returning to the Bureau. Only when approved by upper management will your actions be considered lawful.”
“If you exceed the tolerance of upper management, then even if you escape legal punishment outside, you will face much harsher punishment within the Disaster Management Bureau!”
“So don’t go thinking you now possess supreme authority. On the contrary, many eyes will be watching you.”
“……”
“……”
That final sentence sobered up many who had just gotten excited, as if a bucket of cold water had been poured over them. But in the crowd below, Han Su suddenly brightened and thought of a very reasonable question:
“So in other words, if you’re good at writing reports, you really do gain supreme authority?”
Putting it that way, he suddenly understood why that young master Zhang, who thrived in the underworld of Qinggang, had fought so hard to enter this department.
“So—pick up your cases, take your ID badges and weapons, and prepare to walk out through the base’s gates!”
The instructor’s words were nearing their end. “Your phones and communication devices will be returned to you. The encrypted messaging app developed by Miss Ai has already been installed. Just remember one thing—from this moment on, your life is no longer the same as before.”
“In principle, Miss Ai’s commands will supersede everything else.”
“Even your life!”
“……”
He spoke with great solemnity.
And as if to emphasize the weight of his words, just as he finished speaking, a soft notification sound rang from every trainee’s phone.
Han Su looked down and saw the first message sent through the app:
“Greetings, operations personnel. I am Miss Ai. Welcome to the First Operations Unit, D2 Team, of the Qinggang Anomalous Disaster Assessment and Management Bureau.”
“Codename: Butcher.”
“Initial Rating: C+”
“……”
“I’m only in the D2 Team?”
Han Su was slightly stunned. He had assumed that scoring five A’s would guarantee a spot in D1, but now realized he had been placed in D2.
However, glancing sideways, he exchanged a look with the Doctor and Hei Hu and understood—they had also been assigned to D2.
The only difference was that he had made it in with a leading score, while Hei Hu had barely scraped by.
Then D1 must have...
He looked toward Miss Crow in the distance, as well as several others who had received S-rank evaluations in the Encrypted Text and Incantation category—it seemed only they had made it in.
Of course, this wasn’t particularly important to him. He simply glanced instinctively toward other areas.
Where’s Old Zhang?
Now that he was a member of D2 Team, what new identity would Old Zhang assume to strike up a conversation with him?
