What ascends is the elevator; what descends is the mood.

The current differential treatment has made Zhang Ge sense a whiff of something amiss.

Until the gate slowly opened again, what lay before his eyes was another ring corresponding to the one below, precisely another ring-shaped fortress.

If the upper hive was designed to keep enemies out, then this place was meant to trap them within.

It was not hard to imagine that, in order to avoid pushing the enemy to desperation and risking them resorting to demolition, the spire nobles might refrain from destroying the elevators. This would give the enemy hope of completely seizing the hive, thereby allowing this fortress to further impede their advance.

Though the outcome of a prolonged siege might be the same, time was never in excess. Waiting for reinforcements, evacuating supplies—more time meant more options.

Nor was it difficult to fathom the importance of this fortress as the last line of defense for the nobles. Stationed here were entirely PDF elites or remnants of the Astra Militarum's intact regiments. Zhang Ge even spotted a Macharius heavy tank through the vehicle window.

Zhang Ge was assigned to this very fortress, and the convoy finally came to a halt after entering its interior.

After he parked the vehicle in the garage, the temporary guard outside had already assembled. As Zhang Ge stepped out, the guard captain approached with several men in tow:

"Please continue to follow us."

Zhang Ge didn't mind, although it was somewhat uncomfortable to have three or four burly men sticking so close to protect him. Still, it was only for a short while, and everyone was just trying to make a living, so there was no need to make things difficult for others. Let it be.

Looking around, the interior of the fortress was devoid of any luxurious decorations, all in a uniform iron gray. Small lights were placed at intervals for illumination. In the wide passageway, spacious enough to accommodate three Leman Russ tanks side by side, one could occasionally see hurried columns of soldiers passing by.

This seemingly cyclical scene persisted for quite some time until the sound of engineering machinery gradually grew louder. The outer ring of guards gradually came to a halt, and the captain led Zhang Ge to an entrance.

Zhang Ge asked, "Is it here?"

"Yes, everything beyond this entrance belongs to you."

Walking forward for about ten meters, two Skitarii clad in red robes with radiation-resistant layers and armed with galvanic rifles stood in their path, stopping the escorting guards.

The longstanding grievances between the two sides could not be resolved by mere peace talks at the higher levels. Coincidentally, neither the family's private guard nor the Skitarii were known for their patience. The guard was the first to raise their weapons, and the situation quickly escalated as reinforcements from both sides surged forward.

"Please wait a moment, those metal shells..."

At a time like this, you're asking me to wait? Who's going to cover the danger I'm facing?

Zhang Ge didn't wait for the guard captain to finish his sentence. He pushed him aside and drew the plasma pistol that never left his side.

By the time he reached the front, he could already see fingers from both sides resting on their triggers.

"What's going on?"

Without fully assessing the situation, Zhang Ge kept his weapon lowered, refraining from any aggressive actions.

Before the nearby guard soldiers could respond, an officer-like figure from the Skitarii side spoke first:

"Passage authority update: 1 individual has clearance."

To be honest, the voice sounded more like a playback than actual speech.

Hearing this cryptic statement, Zhang Ge pondered for a moment.

"Does that mean only I can enter?"

The officer nodded in response.

"Isn't this my garrison? Do my people need clearance to enter?"

Zhang Ge temporarily classified these guards as his own and asked.

But the other party simply repeated their response:

"Clearance check: 1 person has clearance."

Clearance? Is it just clearance or something else?

In the increasingly tense atmosphere, Zhang Ge raised his hand and gestured for the guards to lower their gun barrels, then said to the guard captain:

"I order your unit to be incorporated into the Yarkalan First Mechanized Infantry Regiment of the Astra Militarum."

Hearing this, the guard captain was about to refuse, but seeing Zhang Ge's expression, he seemed to realize something and changed his words:

"Understood."

As soon as the conversation ended, the gun barrels of the Skitarii across from them were also lowered. The Skitarii officer led his group away as if nothing had happened, and then the front guard soldiers tentatively stepped over the Skitarii's interception line.

Nothing happened.

Alright, alright, so this is how they do inspections, huh? The Mechanicus sure knows how to handle authority.

After venting a bit about the inflexibility of the tech-priests who dive deep into the grassroots, the path ahead cleared up, and Zhang Ge finally saw the source of the engineering machinery's operational noise.

A Mechanicus monk was directing a large group of servitors and laborers to completely renovate the original hall. A pile of intricate ritual items, incomprehensible lines, and tiny texts covering the walls all around exuded a strong sense of the cult's presence.

Seemingly hearing the sound of the group entering, the monk turned around.

"Ah, Colonel Zhang Ge, hello."

But after just a brief greeting, the monk turned back around as if nothing had happened and continued to point and direct the servitors.

Unable to hold back, Zhang Ge stepped forward and, upon approaching, asked:

"What are you doing?"

Hearing the question, the monk turned around again and calmly replied:

"Of course, we are transforming this place into a sufficiently holy site to prevent any impurity from tainting the Titan, as your soldiers bear the sacred duty of protecting it."

Wait, a female tech-priest?

Zhang Ge detected a rare hint of gender in her voice.

Oh wait, it's possible that the ones I encountered before might have had it too, but they were so heavily modified that they've basically lost their original features. However, since monks are essentially the lowest rank of priests, it's understandable that they haven't undergone the same extreme modifications that leave little flesh remaining, unlike regular priests.

As my thoughts wandered, the other person suddenly took a step forward. But with that step, her height suddenly dropped by a noticeable amount.

Looking down, I realized that after she took that step, her legs had stepped off a small balancing vehicle-like device that had been hidden under her red robe, causing her height to decrease abruptly.

"You haven't installed the brain modification kit? I thought the priest had already relayed the message to you. I'm Yolanda, a low-level Tech-Priest."

She extended her hand, offering a handshake. Her hand still retained about sixty to seventy percent of its flesh, with only the back of her hand showing obvious signs of modification.

No modifications…? Why does that sound a bit like an insult?

Zhang Ge, who was gradually getting used to the ways of the Mechanicus, sighed helplessly and reached out to shake her hand.

"Huh?"

The moment their hands touched, an unexpected and distinct gasp escaped her throat. Her hand instinctively tightened in a brief moment of disorientation caused by a surge of abnormal data flow. At the same time, her thighs, trembling uncontrollably and pressing inward, became visible under her red robe, and her waist subtly arched forward.
