Chapter 18: Chapter 18: Healing One Person, Gaining One Point of Merit?
At this moment, Zhao Feng swept his gaze around and noticed something, his expression shifting slightly with a hint of astonishment.
"Doctor, why aren't you using a heated blade for sterilization? Or at least disinfecting it with strong liquor before using it?"
Zhao Feng observed the military doctor beside him preparing to use a small blade to cut open the flesh of a soldier wounded by an arrow. He couldn't help but ask in surprise.
Earlier, when his arrow wounds were treated, they hadn't penetrated too deeply, so no cutting had been involved.
"Sterilization with fire? Disinfection with liquor? What nonsense is that?"
The military doctor looked at Zhao Feng with confusion.
"Huh?"
Hearing this response, Zhao Feng was momentarily stunned. This was basic medical knowledge that even children in his previous life understood.
Yet, the military doctor of this era didn't seem to have any idea.
"Liquor is for drinking it dulls the pain when you're drunk," the doctor explained. "As for fire sterilization, that's utterly nonsensical. What's the purpose of that?" He shook his head, clearly annoyed. "You're just out of treatment yourself focus on recovering properly."
"Brother Zhao," said a soldier sitting next to Zhao Feng in a low voice, "this doctor is famous in our army. His name is Doctor Chen, and he studied under a renowned physician. Thanks to him, many brothers in the wounded barracks have made it back from the brink of death."
"Famous? If he doesn't even know about sterilization, his reputation might be a bit inflated," Zhao Feng thought to himself. "Or maybe this era simply lacks the concept of sterilization altogether. No wonder so many soldiers die of tetanus without proper disinfection, it's a miracle anyone survives."
"How many soldiers survive the wounded barracks?" Zhao Feng asked the soldier next to him.
"Survive? What does that mean?" The soldier looked puzzled.
"Uh…" Zhao Feng paused, realizing his terminology was too advanced. After a moment of thought, he rephrased, "Out of ten injured soldiers, how many make it out alive?"
"That depends on the heavens," the soldier replied. "If they don't get the 'seven-day wind' infection or bleed out too much, there's a good chance they'll survive. But if they get the infection, they're doomed. And of course, if the wound is too deep and the bleeding won't stop, they're done for too. For severe injuries, it's a miracle if one out of ten survives. But with Doctor Chen's skills, the odds improve a bit."
"You seem to know a lot about this," Zhao Feng remarked.
"Well…" The soldier sighed. "I've been in this barracks a few times. Heaven's been merciful; the gates of the underworld haven't claimed me yet."
"Are they going to watch these men die of the 'seven-day wind' infection?"
Looking around at the groaning, wounded soldiers, Zhao Feng felt an ache in his heart.
If he didn't know better, perhaps he could have turned a blind eye. But he did know what would happen without proper sterilization.
"I'm a soldier of Qin now, even if I'm just in logistics. I can't stand by and watch my comrades die."
Determined, Zhao Feng made up his mind. He slowly got up from his bed and walked toward Doctor Chen.
"Doctor Chen," Zhao Feng began earnestly, "I know you've studied under great teachers and possess extraordinary skills, but I have to suggest something for the sake of our comrades' lives."
"Go ahead," Doctor Chen replied, putting down his tools and looking at Zhao Feng with skepticism.
"First, any blade used to cut flesh must be sterilized with fire to burn away the 'seven-day wind' infection. After treating one soldier, the blade should be cleaned and sterilized again to avoid cross-contamination.
"Second, wounds should be flushed with strong liquor, which can help remove the infection.
"If these methods are followed, the survival rate of wounded soldiers can increase by at least thirty percent," Zhao Feng stated firmly.
Doctor Chen considered this for a moment, then asked, "Do you have medical training?"
"Not extensively," Zhao Feng replied. "But my mother is an excellent physician, and I've picked up some knowledge from her over the years."
"I've never heard of such methods sterilizing with fire and using liquor for disinfection. If I try this and something goes wrong, it won't just be on me you'll bear responsibility too. Are you sure about this?"
Zhao Feng glanced at the wounded soldiers around him, many of whom were barely clinging to life.
"If my method works, it can save countless lives. If anything goes wrong, I'll take full responsibility," Zhao Feng declared resolutely.
Hearing his response, Doctor Chen's eyes showed a flicker of admiration.
"Bring me fire and strong liquor," Doctor Chen ordered his assistants without hesitation.
Soon, a fire basin and liquor were brought over.
"Show me how it's done," Doctor Chen said, handing the blade to Zhao Feng.
Taking the blade, Zhao Feng held it over the fire to sterilize it thoroughly. Once it was ready, he approached an unconscious soldier with a severe arrow wound.
"May heaven bless this work," Zhao Feng murmured.
With steady hands, he poured liquor over the wound, cut open the flesh, and carefully extracted the arrow. Blood began to gush from the wound.
"Needle and thread!" Zhao Feng shouted.
"Needle and thread?" Doctor Chen repeated in confusion.
"You don't stitch wounds shut?" Zhao Feng turned his head sharply.
"Once the arrow is out, we just apply hemostatic powder. Why stitch it?"
"No wonder the survival rate is so low," Zhao Feng thought to himself. "Stitching wounds don't appear until the Han dynasty it's not even a concept yet in this era."
From his pouch, Zhao Feng discreetly retrieved a needle and thread from his system inventory.
Under Doctor Chen's astonished gaze, Zhao Feng stitched the soldier's wound closed, stopping the bleeding significantly. He then applied hemostatic powder over the sutures.
As Zhao Feng finished treating the soldier, a notification suddenly appeared in his mind:
"Successfully treated one person. Gained 1 merit point."
"Merit points for saving lives?"
Zhao Feng was momentarily stunned by the unexpected message.
"What can these merit points be used for?" he wondered, trying to communicate with the system.
