Chapter 192: 192 Combat Mechanisms and Puppets
The next day, Reiger continued to give special training on the practice field to the nine Hashira, helping them unlock the Transparent World.
The members of the Demon Slayer Corps watched Reiger "torturing" the Hashira with glee, cheering at the fun parts, only to be met with the death glares from Shinazugawa Sanemi and Iguro Obanai. Their joy from one second turned into misery the next, and one by one, they were all caught by the Hashira and dragged away for rigorous training.
Ubuyashiki Kagaya had already instructed the Hashira to supervise the Corps members' training in their spare time, to help boost their strength wherever possible.
Normally, this task would have been Reiger's responsibility as the lead instructor, but Ubuyashiki Kagaya might have noticed Reiger's lack of interest in training the ordinary members, thus leaving the task to the Hashira instead.
Indeed, Reiger had no interest in training these average members.
Joking aside, he was not really there to babysit the Demon Slayer Corps. It was one thing to give special training to the Hashira out of kindness and camaraderie, offering help when possible, but to bother with the ordinary members? No, he'd rather pass.
In special training with the Hashira, Reiger might seem to be beating up on the weak, but it wasn't without benefits. At the very least, it allowed him to practice his sword techniques and let the "Swordsman" capability absorb some experience points.
But for the ordinary members, with their power capped at a mere Lv.3, how much training effect could they possibly offer him?
He might as well train on his own!
So, if Ubuyashiki Kagaya had given this task to Reiger, he would certainly have refused it.
However, since Ubuyashiki Kagaya was intent on improving the overall strength of the Demon Slayer Corps, Reiger had no reason to object.
After some thought, Reiger announced to the Hashira.
"From now on, I will train you in the mornings, and in the afternoons, you train the members."
Some agreed with this decision, and others opposed.
Rengoku Kyoujurou, Kochou Shinobu, Kanroji Mitsuri, and Himejima Gyoumei were among those who agreed.
Shinazugawa Sanemi, Iguro Obanai, Uzui Tengen, and Tokitou Muichirou were among those who opposed.
The former were Hashira who valued others highly and naturally supported what was helpful to everyone.
The latter were different; they were upset about their training time being cut in half, believing that boosting the insignificant strength of the ordinary members wasn't as valuable as finding ways to enhance themselves. Hashira were the key combatants, while members could have an almost negligible impact.
The two sides found themselves in clear opposition over this policy, sparking another argument.
Only Tomioka Giyuu, who always maintained a stoic and indifferent demeanor, did not participate in any discussions. (Now you know why you're isolated, don't you?)
Of course, the argument ended abruptly with a single sentence from Reiger.
"In my eyes, your strength is as trivial and dispensable as theirs. How about none of you train and just go home?"
With those words, Shinazugawa Sanemi and his supporters fell silent on the spot.
And so, the matter was settled.
Based on Reiger's decision, the Hashira arranged a training schedule for the entire Demon Slayer Corps.
In the morning, Reiger engaged in combat training with the nine Hashira, while the ordinary members did the most basic physical fitness exercises.
In the afternoon, while Reiger rested, the Hashira conducted targeted training with the members, including but not limited to combat.
As for the evening, it was naturally time for collective rest.
This training schedule was officially put into effect starting today.
Now, Reiger's combat training with the nine Hashira was nearly finished, and it was time for them to train the others.
Leaving them behind, Reiger walked out of the training field on his own.
But just like yesterday, as soon as he exited the field, Reiger was stopped again.
"Big brother!"
This voice, this address, could belong to no one else but one person.
Sure enough, Tanjirou ran toward Reiger with a look of having just finished training, panting heavily.
However, Tanjirou was not alone; someone else was with him.
The person was neither his sister who had just been turned back into a human, nor one of the two young friends he usually brought along, but a small boy wearing a fire-patterned mask, clearly a local from the Swordsmith Village.
Reiger glanced at the boy and found him somewhat familiar.
Then he remembered who this person was.
"It's him?"
At the same moment that Reiger recognized the boy, an idea flashed through his mind, reminding him of an item in the Swordsmith Village.
Instantly, an interested expression appeared on Reiger's face.
And at that moment, Tanjirou had already brought the little boy to Reiger's presence.
"Big brother!"
Tanjirou seemed to like this moniker, calling out with a happy smile on his face.
"You came after all," said Reiger, turning his gaze to Tanjirou and stating the obvious.
"Yes," Tanjirou nodded, appearing to have made up his mind, and declared, "Nezuko and I have decided to go back together, but not now, only after everything is over, together with Zenitsu and Inosuke."
"Have you thought it through?" Reiger didn't try to persuade him further, only asking for confirmation, "You know a promise can become a lifetime of pain and regret if you die, right?"
"To keep that promise and avoid any regrets, I need to continue my training, to continue getting stronger, so I can have the power to survive," Tanjirou said earnestly, looking Reiger straight in the eyes, "Many people have helped Nezuko and me to get this far, pushing us forward from behind."
"Naturally, Zenitsu and Inosuke, as well as Master Rengoku, Miss Shinobu, and Mr. Tomioka, have all shown their expectations of me, not to mention the kindness of the lord, the wills of my ancestors, and the memories of my deceased family..."
"It's because of all these factors that I've been able to come this far, to get here."
"Without everyone, I'm sure I would have fallen along the way."
Tanjirou's voice grew increasingly powerful.
"Now, everyone is heading into battle, willing to stake everything to end it all and stop the tragedy."
"If that's the case, how can I abandon everyone and run away with my sister alone?"
"In the future I want, I'm not only after a life with my sister as family, but with everyone else as well!"
Tanjirou gave Reiger a big, bright smile.
"That's why I will win the victory together with everyone!"
This was the conclusion that Tanjirou and Nezuko came to after talking it over for an entire night.
The Kamado siblings were always grateful people.
The bond between them had sustained them this far, but they were not only connected through their bonds with each other, but with others as well.
Not to mention, they had a deep-seated grudge against Kibutsuji Muzan and a legacy from Tsukiguni Yoriichi passed down through the Kamado family.
In both sentiment and logic, there was no reason for them to avoid this battle.
"Sorry to waste your kindness," Tanjirou said, still bowing to Reiger.
"It's fine," Reiger said with a faint smile. "I had already guessed your decision. I just hope that you survive until the end and see the future you long for."
"Yes!"
Tanjirou replied loudly.
As the conversation between Reiger and Tanjirou came to an end, the little boy who had been by Tanjirou's side finally sprang into action.
"Are you done talking? Then it's my turn!"
The little boy announced this.
"Ah, let me introduce him," said Tanjirou, seemingly just remembering the little boy's presence. He quickly turned to Reiger and said, "His name is Kotetsu, and he's from the village of swordsmiths."
"I can tell." Reiger glanced at the Hannya mask on the boy's face and then asked, "So what? How did you two get mixed up together?"
"We didn't get mixed up, we just met," Tanjirou scratched his head and said, "He was hiding and peeking from the side, too afraid to come closer. He seemed a bit pitiful, so I brought him over."
"I-I wasn't peeking!" Kotetsu panicked and protested loudly, "I was just passing by! Yes, just passing by!"
"Is that so?" Tanjirou cocked his head to the side and said, "But didn't you come yesterday too?"
"What?" Kotetsu was shocked and exclaimed, "How do you know that?"
"Because of the smell!" Tanjirou puffed up his chest and lifted his head, "My nose is very sensitive!"
"I don't get what you're saying at all!"
Kotetsu argued back.
Nevertheless, he no longer denied having been there, instead stealing glances at Reiger with an air of having much to say but hesitating.
"What is it?" Seeing this, Reiger asked curiously, "Do you have something you need from me?"
"...Well, sort of," Kotetsu's voice involuntarily faded, "I heard you are the owner of a divine blade, and I wanted to ask you something."
Reiger signaled for him to continue.
With much hesitation, Kotetsu finally mustered the courage to ask his question.
"Can you repair mechanical dolls?"
Kotetsu asked this.
"Mechanical dolls?"
Tanjirou blinked.
Reiger, however, looked as if he suddenly understood.
He knew what Kotetsu was there for.
"You mean the Yoriichi Type Zero?"
At Reiger's words, Kotetsu was surprised.
"You, you know about Yoriichi Type Zero?"
Kotetsu seemed taken aback.
"Yoriichi Type Zero?" Tanjirou looked puzzled, his eyes turning to dots as he asked, "What's that?"
"It's a mechanical doll," Kotetsu explained to Tanjirou. "It was created by my ancestors as a combat mechanical doll capable of one hundred and eight different movements, with strength far exceeding that of humans. Many demon slayers who visited the swordsmith village used it to train themselves. But since it's gotten old and is almost broken, fewer and fewer people come specifically to train with it, and those who know about its existence are dwindling."
"I see!"
Tanjirou nodded earnestly.
Reiger doubted if the boy had really understood.
But the important matter wasn't him right now.
"Do you want me to fix the Yoriichi Type Zero for you?"
Reiger voiced Kotetsu's purpose.
"Yes."
Kotetsu nodded firmly.
