JJK: The Cursed Child

Chapter 33: Ch 32 - Night before the Hunt

The city skyline stretched out before them, a jagged silhouette against the fading twilight. The hum of traffic below was muted, replaced by the occasional gust of wind that swept across the rooftop.

Liam stood near the edge, his hands resting on the cool metal railing. His eyes were fixed on the horizon, but his mind was far from the bustling metropolis below.

Behind him, the rooftop access door creaked open, and the familiar sound of heavy boots on concrete followed.

Toji Fushiguro, ever the picture of calculated lethality, emerged from the shadows, his dark eyes scanning the rooftop before landing on his protégé.

"You're early," Toji remarked, his tone casual as he leaned against a nearby ventilation unit. "Didn't think you'd show up until midnight."

Liam didn't turn around. "Figured I'd get some fresh air before you dragged me into another lecture on the importance of 'sticking to the plan.'"

Toji smirked, folding his arms. "You'd be surprised how many people die because they didn't."

Liam finally glanced over his shoulder, a wry grin on his face. "I'm not 'people,' though, am I? You made sure of that."

Toji chuckled, the sound low and almost threatening. "Confidence suits you, kid. Just don't let it go to your head. You're not invincible."

Liam turned fully, leaning back against the railing. "Neither are you, old man. Or do I need to remind you of the time I nearly had you on your knees during training?"

Toji raised an eyebrow, clearly unimpressed. "Nearly doesn't count. And for the record, I let you get that hit in."

"Sure you did," Liam said, his grin widening. "Whatever helps you sleep at night."

"So... are you not going to sharpen your sword for tomorrow or something..." Liam asked curiously.

Toji chuckled, "You've been watching too many action movies, kid. Real pros know when to rest."

Liam laughed, setting the kunai aside. "Resting, huh? Is that what you call pacing around like a caged animal earlier?"

Toji shot him a glare but couldn't hold back a grin. "Funny. You've got jokes now, huh? Must be feeling pretty confident."

"Can you blame me? I've been training with the best," Liam said, leaning back on his hands.

"I mean, if I can hold my own against you, what's a little mission against a few sorcerers?"

Toji raised an eyebrow. "A few sorcerers? One of those 'few' happens to be Suguru Geto. You know, the guy who controls a whole army of cursed spirits?"

"And the other?" Liam smirked. "Satoru Gojo, the so-called strongest sorcerer alive. Yeah, yeah, I've heard it all before."

Toji sighed, shaking his head. "Don't underestimate them, kid! They are not that simple."

Liam sat up straight, his expression growing more serious. "I'm not underestimating anyone, Toji. I know exactly how strong they are. But you've seen me in action. You know I'm ready."

Toji studied him for a moment, his dark eyes narrowing slightly. "You're not wrong. You've come a long way. You've mastered Reverse Cursed Techniques, your Ten Shadows control is sharper than ever, and Kamui… well, that one's just plain unfair."

"Jealous?" Liam grinned.

"Hardly," Toji replied, though there was a glint of pride in his eyes. "But yeah, you've earned your place. You're strong, adaptable, and annoyingly confident."

"I'll take that as a compliment."

"It wasn't," Toji muttered, though his smirk said otherwise.

The two shared a brief silence, the kind only forged through months of grueling training and shared battles. Despite the constant teasing, there was a mutual respect between them—a bond forged in blood, sweat, and the occasional near-death experience.

Finally, Toji broke the quiet and asked

"You really want in on this mission?"

"Of course," Liam said without hesitation. "If I want to change the Jujutsu Society one day then I have to be an active part of it."

"Like I said," Liam replied with a confident grin, "Fighting Geto's got to be easier than sparring with you at full strength."

Toji snorted. "Cocky little—fine. You're in. But don't expect me to save your ass if things go south."

"Wouldn't dream of it," Liam said, his grin widening.

"So," Liam said after a moment, "What's the plan for tomorrow?"

Toji pulled a folded map from his pocket, spreading it out on the flat surface of the ventilation unit.

"This is where we will surround our target Rika Amanai... Tokyo Jujutsu High!" He began, tapping a spot marked with a red circle. "Decent security, but nothing we can't handle."

Liam leaned in, studying the layout. "And the targets?"

"To get to Amanai, we'll need to split up Gojo and Geto. Gojo's your typical overpowered maniac—fast, lethal, and annoying as hell. I'll take him on directly, keep him out of the way."

Liam nodded. "And Geto?"

"That's where you come in," Toji said, his gaze sharpening. "Geto's no pushover. He's a Special Grade Sorcerer, with a whole arsenal of cursed spirits at his command. Your job is to keep him busy, away from Amanai, and ideally, take him down."

Liam's grin returned. "Sounds easy enough. I've been itching for a real challenge."

Toji gave him a hard look. "Don't underestimate him. Geto's not some run-of-the-mill sorcerer. He'll test you in ways you haven't faced before."

"Good," Liam said, his tone confident. "That's how I like it."

Toji shook his head, a hint of amusement in his eyes. "Cocky little bastard. Just remember, this isn't a training exercise. One mistake, and you're dead."

Liam's expression sobered, but only slightly. "I know what's at stake. But you've trained me for this. I won't let you down."

Toji nodded, satisfied. "Alright. Here's how we're going to do this…"

The two spent the next hour meticulously going over every detail of the mission. Toji laid out the timeline, the entry points, and the contingency plans. Liam listened intently, occasionally chiming in with his own suggestions.

"What if Gojo doesn't take the bait?" Liam asked at one point.

"He will," Toji replied confidently. "The guy's got a hero complex. As soon as he senses trouble, he'll come running. That's when I'll lead him away from the main target."

"And if Geto gets suspicious?"

"That's your problem," Toji said with a smirk. "Figure it out."

Liam rolled his eyes. "Thanks for the vote of confidence."

They continued their planning, the tension in the air gradually giving way to a more relaxed atmosphere.

"So," Liam said after a while, "What's the deal with Gojo and Geto, anyway? They seem… close."

Toji snorted. "Close? Those two are practically inseparable. Makes them predictable, though. Split them up, and they're a lot easier to deal with."

Liam raised an eyebrow. "You almost sound like you respect them."

"I respect their power," Toji admitted. "But respect doesn't mean I won't take them down if they get in my way."

Liam nodded, leaning back against the railing. "Fair enough."

The conversation slowly shifted, drifting into lighter territory.
