Chapter 61: Chapter 61: Mrs. Kaguya, I Like You!
Black hair. Red eyes. A calm, quiet temperament.
And a beautiful face about 70% identical to Kaguya Shinomiya… She was clearly a larger, more mature version of Kaguya herself.
Amamiya Natsuki turned to look at Miss Kaguya beside him in surprise.
Could this be Kaguya-san's mother?
Very likely.
They looked so much alike that even if she wasn't her mother, she had to be a close relative.
No wonder she said "please" this morning. Even the cold-blooded Kaguya had something precious she wanted to protect.
"It's my mother."
Kaguya folded her arms calmly and stated.
Natsuki nodded—he had guessed right.
It was indeed Mrs. Kaguya.
His eyes flicked discreetly toward Miss Kaguya's chest.
What a pity.
She hadn't inherited any of her mother's good genes.
"What are you staring at?"
Kaguya narrowed her eyes and tilted her head suspiciously.
"Sounds like a conspiracy among big families," Natsuki changed the subject. "Are you going to lock him in a dark basement afterward?"
"Don't worry." Kaguya tilted her head slightly. "The military's developed an amnesia spray. I'll have you try it later."
"Any side effects?"
"Possibly your intelligence regressing to childhood levels."
"Please use it on me then."
"…"
Being able to return to childhood was a dream for countless people.
Kaguya's red eyes met his. She bit her lip lightly and continued,
"My mother passed away from a heart attack when I was very young… Yesterday, in the horror game, someone gave information about earthbound spirits. It made me uneasy."
Now it made sense why she had looked so strange earlier.
The cause of earthbound spirits' birth was still unknown, but the popular theory said that after a person dies, if they had strong attachments or unfulfilled wishes, they could become earthbound spirits.
So… what was Mrs. Kaguya's lingering attachment?
Kaguya silently stared at her mother standing by the French window in the distance and said softly,
"I came here yesterday afternoon and saw my mother standing by the window."
"Did you talk to her then?"
Natsuki suddenly asked.
"No." Kaguya shook her head. "I don't know what would happen if I did."
There was more she wanted to say but held back.
So many years had passed, and now, seeing her mother as an earthbound spirit, she didn't know what to feel.
"What a pity."
Natsuki felt a pang of regret.
If she'd known what would happen if she talked to Mrs. Kaguya, she could've taken the credit later—especially to Miko.
"Yesterday evening, just as I was about to leave, I saw a very strange evil spirit with a sickle."
Kaguya's eyes narrowed, a dangerous light flashing in their wine-red depths.
"This sickle spirit hunts other evil spirits. It's very dangerous."
What to do when danger comes?
Cut it off at the source.
No matter what, she wouldn't allow that spirit to harm her mother. Her choice was to defeat it outright.
"Understood."
Natsuki nodded.
There were many types of evil spirits in the real world, and their relationships weren't always peaceful. Arguments and fights broke out often. The "little old men" at the bottom of the hierarchy were even caught by larger spirits and used as skewers.
Kaguya quietly looked at Mrs. Kaguya and whispered,
"I don't know if the sickle spirit is here now. If not, we'll come back tomorrow."
As she finished, Natsuki suddenly spoke, voice deep:
"Are you talking about that evil spirit?"
From the shadows, an evil spirit cloaked in black appeared, holding a huge sickle. The cloak's edges misted and dissipated, giving it the look of the Western god of death.
The air turned cold.
Mrs. Kaguya, still in spirit form, stood abruptly, panic flashing across her pretty face as she stepped back nervously.
Kaguya's face froze. "Natsuki-san," she said urgently.
"On it."
Natsuki stepped forward and activated his aura to repel evil spirits.
Transparent flames engulfed the sickle spirit's body. But unlike the human-head spirit that burned instantly, this one resisted the flames, burning slowly.
A cold, hoarse roar echoed, sending chills down everyone's spines.
The sickle spirit retreated quickly, passing through walls and disappearing.
At the same time, Mrs. Kaguya suddenly noticed two figures hiding and peeping. Her eyes widened with surprise and curiosity.
"Let's go."
Kaguya turned away swiftly.
Natsuki nodded and suddenly saw Mrs. Kaguya walking toward them.
The three pretended not to notice each other.
Mrs. Kaguya approached, tilted her head at Kaguya with a puzzled expression, then stretched out a slender jade finger and poked…
Natsuki felt a slight chill on his face and went speechless.
Madam, your eyesight is terrible!
Your daughter's right here, so why poke me?
"Ahem."
Suddenly, Natsuki realized—
Why could he feel Mrs. Kaguya's cold body temperature?
Why did it feel like an electric current was colliding?
Unlike the game's evil spirits, who were invisible and intangible, real-world spirits could be seen but had no physical form.
You could walk through them as if they were air.
But Mrs. Kaguya was different.
Suddenly, a complicated magic circle appeared under Natsuki's and Mrs. Kaguya's feet. The lights flickered, and Natsuki had a sudden epiphany.
At the same time, Mrs. Kaguya's confused eyes cleared, and she felt the mysterious connection too.
She spoke for the first time, her voice like a clear, beautiful symphony:
"...Master."
"Master?!"
Kaguya blinked, stunned. Without thinking about Mrs. Kaguya standing beside her, she turned to stare at Natsuki.
She'd heard it right.
Mom just called him master!
"Kaguya-san, please listen to me."
Natsuki wiped cold sweat from his forehead and hurriedly explained,
"Your mother just willingly contracted and became my guardian spirit."
He hadn't thought of making her a guardian spirit—it had been her choice.
"Hey, Kaguya-san?"
Mrs. Kaguya's eyes landed on her daughter's face, curious. "Your name is exactly the same as mine."
"Don't look like that," Natsuki sighed. "She's your daughter."
"Eh hey hey?"
Mrs. Kaguya covered her mouth, astonished. "Little Kaguya was only three years old… How did she become an adult so quickly?"
Natsuki glanced at Kaguya and whispered, "Good news: now you can act spoiled as much as you want with your mom."
