Kazaf: The upside down

Chapter 20: Chapter 20: The Guardian’s Wrath

The air inside the tomb turned ice-cold. The golden statues along the walls trembled, their gemstone eyes burning with an eerie glow. Then, without warning, they moved.

One by one, the statues stepped off their pedestals, their metallic bodies grinding as they came to life. Each carried a weapon—massive swords, spears, and axes forged from an unknown metal that shimmered in the dim light.

Rahim took a step back. "I hate when I'm right."

Samir clutched the ancient box in his hands, his face pale. "Uh… guys? Maybe we should put this back?"

Kazaf narrowed his eyes, already preparing for a fight. "Too late for that."

The largest of the statues, a towering figure with four arms, raised its weapon and let out a deep, echoing growl. Its voice rumbled through the chamber, though the words were ancient and incomprehensible.

Then it attacked.

The Battle for Survival

The Guardian moved with unnatural speed, its colossal sword cleaving through the air toward Kazaf. He barely dodged, rolling to the side as the blade struck the stone floor, leaving a deep gash in the ground.

Yasir slashed at one of the smaller statues with his sword, but the blade barely scratched the metallic surface. "Their bodies are too strong!"

Harun backed up, scanning the room for a weakness. "There must be something keeping them alive—just like the skeletons!"

Kazaf ducked under another swing and focused his energy. He channeled his strength into his fist, then struck the Guardian's arm. The impact cracked the metal slightly, but it wasn't enough to break it.

"We need a different approach," Kazaf muttered.

Meanwhile, Samir was frantically studying the box. "There's an inscription on this thing! It says, 'Only the one who proves their worth may claim the treasure.'"

Rahim groaned. "What does that mean? We're already fighting for our lives!"

Samir squinted at the carvings. "I think… I think it's a test! The tomb isn't just protecting the treasure—it's challenging us."

Kazaf's mind raced. If this was a test, then brute force wouldn't work. They needed to prove something.

Then he realized—he wasn't just fighting an enemy. He was being judged.

Taking a deep breath, Kazaf stepped forward. He raised his hands and lowered his weapon. "I am not here to steal. I am here to earn my place."

The Guardian paused, its glowing eyes locked onto him. The other statues froze as well, waiting.

Yasir looked at him like he was crazy. "Kazaf, what are you doing?"

"Trust me," Kazaf said without looking away from the Guardian.

A deep, rumbling voice echoed through the chamber, speaking in an ancient tongue. The Guardian's eyes flickered, as if considering Kazaf's words.

Then, it slowly lowered its weapon.

The energy in the room shifted. The hostile aura faded, and the other statues returned to their original positions.

Samir exhaled in relief. "I can't believe that worked."

Harun nodded. "You proved yourself worthy."

The Guardian stepped aside, revealing a hidden passage behind it. A final test, leading to the tomb's true treasure.

Kazaf looked at his companions. "Shall we?"

With cautious excitement, they stepped into the unknown.

The Forbidden Chamber

The hidden passage led them into a narrow tunnel, the air thick with dust and mystery. Flickering torches lined the walls, casting shadows that danced like spirits.

Rahim ran his fingers along the carvings on the walls. "These are ancient writings… I can't read them, but they feel important."

Samir, ever the scholar, squinted at them. "I think they're warnings. Something about the 'Watcher in the Dark.'"

Yasir tightened his grip on his sword. "Great. More things to worry about."

As they pressed forward, the tunnel widened into a massive chamber. At the center of the room stood a pedestal, and upon it lay a golden artifact—an ornate medallion encrusted with black gemstones.

Harun took a cautious step forward. "Is this… the treasure?"

Samir nodded. "Looks like it."

Kazaf, however, remained still. Something felt wrong. His instincts, honed by years of survival, screamed at him that they weren't alone.

And then… the shadows moved.

A deep, guttural growl echoed through the chamber. From the far end of the room, a monstrous figure emerged from the darkness. It was unlike anything they had seen before—a massive, skeletal creature wrapped in swirling black mist. Its eyes burned with an unnatural red glow.

"The Watcher in the Dark…" Samir whispered in horror.

The creature let out an ear-piercing screech, shaking the very foundations of the tomb.

Kazaf immediately drew his weapon. "Looks like we've got another test."

The Final Test

The Watcher in the Dark lunged with terrifying speed, its clawed hand swiping at the group. Kazaf barely dodged, feeling the air tremble from the force of the attack.

Rahim slashed at the creature, but his blade passed through the mist as if cutting through air. "It's not solid!"

Samir grabbed Harun's arm. "If it's not solid, then physical attacks won't work! We need to find another way."

Kazaf gritted his teeth. "Then we fight it on its terms."

Closing his eyes, he focused his energy. A soft blue aura began to glow around him, his cultivator power resonating with the energy in the room.

The Watcher let out another roar, but this time, Kazaf didn't move. He let the energy around him expand, forming a barrier that deflected the creature's attack.

Yasir watched in awe. "What is he doing?"

Samir's eyes widened. "He's using his own energy to counter the creature's form."

Kazaf took a deep breath. Then, with a single swift movement, he thrust his palm forward. A shockwave of energy erupted from his body, colliding with the Watcher. The misty form of the creature trembled violently before letting out one final, ear-splitting shriek—then it dissolved into nothingness.

The room fell silent.

Harun exhaled. "That… was terrifying."

Rahim wiped sweat from his brow. "Can we grab the treasure and leave now?"

Kazaf nodded. He approached the pedestal and carefully lifted the medallion. The second his fingers touched it, the walls of the chamber began to tremble.

"Oh no," Samir groaned. "Not again."

The ground beneath them shook violently. The ancient tomb was collapsing.

Kazaf turned to the others. "Run!"

With the medallion secured, they sprinted toward the exit as the walls cracked and the ceiling caved in behind them. Rocks and debris fell around them, but they pushed forward, dodging with everything they had.

As they neared the entrance, Kazaf saw the massive stone door slowly closing. With a final burst of speed, he grabbed Samir by the collar and leaped through just as the tomb sealed shut behind them.

They collapsed onto the ground outside, breathing heavily.

Yasir groaned. "I am never doing this again."

Harun chuckled. "We say that every time."

Kazaf sat up, holding the medallion in his hands. "It wasn't just treasure," he murmured. "This is something more."

Rahim raised an eyebrow. "Like what?"

Kazaf stared at the medallion. "Something powerful. And something dangerous."

A quiet tension settled between them as they realized—this was just the beginning.
