Kazaf: The upside down

Chapter 33: Chapter 33 – The Aftermath and the Warning

The battlefield was eerily silent. The disciples of the Elara Sect stood frozen, their weapons still in hand, as they watched the remnants of Jalwa's forces disappear into the shadows. The oppressive aura that had gripped the sect grounds slowly faded, replaced by a tense stillness.

Kazaf remained where he was, his fists still clenched, his body still thrumming with the residual energy of his battle with Vahir. His breathing was heavy, but his mind was sharp. The way Vahir had looked at him before leaving—it wasn't defeat. It was intrigue.

Kazaf knew this wasn't over.

From above, Grand Elder Basir finally turned toward him, his sharp eyes scrutinizing Kazaf as if measuring his very soul.

"Come with me," Basir said, his voice calm but leaving no room for argument.

Kazaf hesitated. He wasn't in the mood for another lecture, but something in Basir's tone made it clear this was important. With a final glance at his friends—Rahim, Samir, Harun, and Asma—he nodded and followed.

A Meeting of Power

The inner sanctum of the Elara Sect was a place reserved only for the highest-ranking elders. Kazaf had never been here before. The walls were inscribed with ancient cultivation scriptures, and a faint energy pulsed in the air, making the entire chamber feel alive.

Inside, Sect Leader Jamal Kassim sat at the head of a long table. Beside him were Elder Rafiq, Elder Nadim, and now, Grand Elder Basir. Their expressions were unreadable.

Kazaf stood before them, arms crossed. "I assume this isn't just about congratulating me on surviving?"

Jamal Kassim exhaled. "No, Kazaf. This is about what comes next."

Basir took a step forward, hands behind his back. "You fought well. Better than expected. But the fact remains—you are now a target."

Kazaf's eyes narrowed. "Jalwa already wanted me dead. What's new?"

Basir's gaze sharpened. "Vahir didn't come here to kill you."

Kazaf frowned.

Jamal Kassim nodded. "He came to test you."

Silence settled in the room. The weight of those words sunk into Kazaf's mind.

"Test me?" he repeated.

"Yes," Basir confirmed. "Jalwa doesn't eliminate threats too soon. He studies them. He lets them grow, waiting for the perfect moment to either recruit or destroy them."

Kazaf scoffed. "Like hell I'd ever work for him."

"That's not the point," Jamal Kassim said. "The point is—Jalwa won't attack immediately. He'll let you think you have time. He'll let you grow stronger… so that when he comes, he'll break you at your peak."

A cold chill ran down Kazaf's spine. He clenched his fists.

"I won't let that happen."

Basir studied him carefully. "Good. Because from now on, your training will be different."

Kazaf raised an eyebrow. "How different?"

"You're no longer just another disciple in the Elara Sect," Basir stated. "You are the key to something greater. And if you truly wish to survive in the Down World, you must be ready for what comes next."

Kazaf felt the shift in the air. This wasn't just about revenge anymore.

It was about becoming something more.

Secrets and Shadows

Later that night, as Kazaf walked back to his quarters, his mind was racing. Vahir's strength, Basir's warning, and Jalwa's intentions—everything was moving faster than he expected.

He wasn't afraid. But he knew that the time for casual battles was over.

"Kazaf," a familiar voice called.

He turned to see Asma standing near one of the garden paths, her arms folded, concern in her eyes.

"You okay?" she asked.

Kazaf smirked. "Took more than a few punches today, but yeah, I'll live."

She didn't laugh. Instead, she stepped closer, lowering her voice. "I heard what the elders said. About Jalwa watching you."

Kazaf's expression darkened. "So you were listening in?"

She shrugged. "I had to know. You're… important."

For a moment, Kazaf was caught off guard. There was something in her voice that felt different. Genuine.

Before he could say anything, she continued.

"Just… be careful, okay?"

Kazaf smirked again, but this time, it wasn't just confidence. "I will. But don't worry, Asma. I'm not that easy to break."

Asma looked at him for a long moment before nodding.

"Good," she said softly. Then, without another word, she turned and walked away.

Kazaf watched her go, then turned his eyes toward the sky.

Somewhere out there, Jalwa was waiting.

But Kazaf wasn't planning to just wait.

He was going to be ready.
