Chapter 33: The First Day
"I am Ri Boku. This is a message to all residents of Sai." I heard as I made my way down the tower and through the troops, towards the wall.
"Though I am your enemy, I admire your courage to take up weapons as civilians. That said! If all of you think you can wage war on nothing but courage alone, then you are sorely mistaken!" The man shouted, reaching all the 4 walls.
"We have an army of elites. The best of the best from all of the 6 Nations Army. You cannot win! Surrender now Sai, do this. And you have my word that not a single one of you will be killed." He said, spreading a certain amount of uncertainty throughout our army.
Murmurs of surrender and talks could be heard. But I could see they wouldn't give up just like that.
So with that, I walked up. Towards the fortifications, and as I passed our first line, I heard it.
"LIKE HELL WE´RE SURRENDERING!"
It came from one of the troops and at the same time. I saw Shin begin to climb onto the fortifications, about 20 meters to my left.
"Good luck Shin, it's your moment to shine." I told the man, as I sat down at the fortifications, my feet dangling from the wall.
Shin was slightly put off by my presence, but he then smiled. Taking in a deep breath before shouting.
"Why don't you just stop talking! Sorry to disappoint, but nobody Is buying your speech, Ri Boku!" Shin shouted, and I could see Ri Boku was taken slightly aback.
"You just keep going on and on about "Oh Please surrender, we don't want to fight you guys" Well all I´m hearing is that you're downright scared of us!" Shin shouted, getting more and more excited about his speech.
"What do your elite troops think of that!? Too bad your little intimidation tactics is not gonna work on these fine troops. And you wanna know why? Because the people of Sai have a good reason to fight you!" Shin said, getting louder. And I could see our men were getting rowdied up by all of this.
"Even if it costs them their lives! So go ahead, start climbing. Sai is not about to fall TO THE LIKES OF YOU!! WE WILL WIN THIS BATTLE, NO MATTER WHAT YOU TRY!" Shin shouted, ending his speech as the entire population of Sai roared with all their might.
Even I was taken aback by the roars, and Ri Boku was downright shocked, his horse even flinched back.
"Good luck, Ri Boku." I said, under my breath as I jumped down from the wall, landing in front of the men.
These men, nor the wall was mine. But I´ll impress King Sei a bit.
With that, I drew my sword and retreated into their lines.
It didn´t take long for the first ladders to reach the walls, and the civilians were quickly losing, as they gained a foothold of 50 men by the time I got there.
"Alrighty, men. CHARGE!" I shouted at the civilians as I came out of their dense lines, swinging my sword from left to right, they were unfortunately blocked.
But they still threw all 3 of them back, 1 over the wall. And 2 into some of my soldiers.
And with that I pushed forth, my sword swinging around as I dodged their swords, slipping through their lines and taking advantage of it. My sword cutting through tens, and forming a gap. Which allowed the civilians to push through.
Their spears crushed the lines of the elites, their morale was so high. Some of them got up after taking a killing blow, taking one last soldier with them.
I saw Shin was apprehending another ladder, so I sped up. Jumping high, and landing right by the ladder, swinging my sword in a 360 slash, taking out 10 of them with a single slash.
Before stabbing the man highest on the wall, grabbing his body before throwing him down the ladder, giving us a brief seconds of no reinforcements.
"This is your chance! Push! Form a shield wall, stab them before they reach solid ground!" I shouted, directing the infantrymen to form a shield wall with spears, to secure the wall somehow.
....
"HOOO"
"HOOO"
"HOOO"
"HOOO"
I heard the soldiers shout as I made my way up towards the headquarters. Ri Boku had sent a detachment to shout during the entire night, to keep our soldiers awake.
As I said, he would do a common siege.
I saw Ten and her strategic unit on top of the HQ, as Sei had just arrived.
As I walked up the stairs, and came into view. I spoke
"Order them to halt their fire, Ten. You're wasting arrows." I told her simply as I walked up to the railing.
"What!? The enemy army is sieging us." She exclaimed but I shook my head.
"Stop panicking like a little girl, you're our tactician. Wake up and analyze it." I said, as she calmed down, sort of.
"Why would they be shouting if they wanted to siege us? No, they intend to keep our civilians awake at night." I said, and her eyes widened.
"The civilians are inexperienced, and won't be able to sleep." She said as it dawned upon her.
"Indeed, Ri Boku and his army can only send about 30% of their troops up the wall at maximum capacity every day, and that's if they actually gain a foothold. Over 70% of his army is just standing there. He was wise to do this." I said, and Ten had to find a place to sit, as she began thinking it over.
"Don't think it over, there is nothing we can do, Ten. We can ride out to them, but It would likely backfire. There is nothing we can do." I said, and she nodded slowly, coming to the same conclusion.
"We can't just let our men become sleep-deprived." the King complained and I nodded.
"Bring as many as you can inside the houses, castles, and areas with some sound-decreasing ability. It'll be stacked, but it's better than being awake. Keep those who can't fit on guard." I said, but Ten spoke up.
"But what if they attack? We´ll be caught off-guard, and for them to get to the walls from the castle and houses, it'd take too long." She said.
"Keep the veterans outside, they will be able to sleep through it. In addition, Ten. You might be a bright woman, and your mind is strong indeed. But you're overthinking it, as I said from the start. Ri Boku will be going traditionally, so stop thinking of every solution. Or you'll exhaust yourself faster than our men." I said as I walked down the stairs to my bed, amongst my soldiers.
The day had passed quite easily, the enemy had brought up 8 ladders. So I had each of my officers on each, and then some elites on the 2 remaining. But I made sure our civilians did the heavy lifting, they needed the experience after all.
