When Ayr was aboard the ship, Rocks set a strict condition in exchange for mentoring him—before the dissolution of the Rocks Pirates, Ayr must fight for him with everything he had.

Rocks understood Ayr's nature well. The man was loyal—perhaps too much so. If Rocks gave the order now, Ayr would undoubtedly come. He would throw himself headfirst into the fray, even if it meant dying alongside him.

But Rocks didn't issue that command.

Not because he was hesitant.

Not because he feared death.

It was because he didn't want to drag Ayr down with him.

He wasn't sentimental. Rocks never viewed anyone as a friend or comrade. His ambition was singular: to become the world's absolute ruler. But during the course of the battle at the Valley of the Gods, Ayr had kept his word, fighting beside him with unmatched intensity, holding the line even when faced with the combined might of Kong, Garp, and Sengoku.

For the first time in years, Rocks felt something stir—something faint and unfamiliar.

Respect.

So now, with his dream of domination shattered, Rocks chose to face death alone.

"Hahaha… Rocks, looks like fate has finally caught up with you today!" Roger's voice rang out clearly as he approached, blade drawn, eyes resolute.

He didn't know the exact reason the Rocks' inner circle had betrayed their captain, but it didn't matter. The moment of reckoning had come.

"Fate? Tch… What a joke," Rocks spat, his tone laced with scorn. His breath was ragged, his blood soaked into the cracked ground, but his will? Unbroken.

Even on death's door, Rocks would not kneel.

He never had.

He never would.

"I've faced plenty of death-defying lunatics on this sea," Roger said, his tone now solemn, "but you… You're in a class of your own. That's why I'll fight you myself—no backup, no tricks. You deserve that much."

The arrogance slipped away from Roger's voice. Now there was only respect. This wasn't just a clash between enemies—it was a final duel between two titans whose wills had shaped an era.

Rayleigh, standing beside Jabba, frowned.

"Roger, don't underestimate him," he warned. "That monster's body is already beyond human. Even like this… there's no telling what he can still pull off."

Rayleigh had seen it with his own eyes—Rocks was more than a beast. His physique bordered on the supernatural. His muscle density, regenerative rate, and Haki mastery defied logic. Even when the full Roger Pirates had ganged up on him earlier, they'd failed to bring him down.

Jabba added, "He's dying anyway, so why risk it? Just finish it. Our mission ends here."

But Roger didn't waver. He glanced back at them, eyes firm.

"This is my choice. Don't interfere."

The two First Mates exchanged a look and reluctantly stepped back. They knew Roger well. Once his mind was set, not even death could change it.

Now, all eyes turned toward the final battle.

"You're going to kill me, brat?" Rocks rasped, his hand gripping the hilt of his black blade—a Supreme Grade sword that had drawn the blood of legends.

"That's the idea." Roger narrowed his gaze.

"Hahahaha! Then let's see you try!" Rocks roared, and in a blur, charged forward.

His blade glowed, wrapped in a storm of black lightning—Haoshoku Haki. His Busoshoku was layered, pulsing with deep crimson. Even in this state, his mastery over Ryuo—the advanced internal destruction form of Armament—remained terrifying.

Roger met him head-on.

His saber Ace was similarly cloaked in dual Haki, radiating with fierce intensity.

"BOOOOOM!!!"

Before steel even touched, the sheer pressure from their clashing Haoshoku Haki split the air. The sky cracked above them. Shockwaves leveled everything in a hundred-meter radius. The cliffside trembled under their fury.

The spectators—Marines and pirates alike—were blown back.

Still, neither man flinched.

Despite Rocks' Haki being a touch superior in purity, his body was failing him. The wounds, the fatigue, the betrayal—they were all catching up.

"BOOM! BOOM! BOOM!"

A flurry of strikes rained down, tearing apart what remained of the Valley's center. Massive stones cracked. Air itself hissed.

The duel felt like a battle between two gods of destruction.

Then Roger made his move.

"Kamusari!!!" (Divine Departure!)

The technique that would later become legendary—the one he would one day use to fell Kozuki Oden—was now unleashed at full power.

Veins bulged across Roger's arms. His grip tightened. Two-color Haki surged to maximum potency.

"SWOOOOSH!!!"

A wave of destruction—golden and black, tearing through dimensions—exploded toward Rocks.

"Rogerrrr!!!"

Rocks raised his blade, but his weakened body couldn't handle the strain. The impact tore the sword from his grip and slammed into his chest.

"KRACK!!!"

A deep wound, carved down to the bone.

"PFFF!!"

Blood burst from Rocks' mouth. His legs buckled. Vision blurred. He fell to one knee, clutching his chest.

Roger stepped forward, breathing heavily, blade trembling slightly from the immense power he'd channeled.

"It's over, Rocks."

For a long moment, there was silence.

Then Rocks looked up, and to everyone's surprise, he laughed.

"Roger… even if you kill me, it won't be you who rules the seas…"

His voice was hoarse, but his eyes gleamed with clarity.

"You think you've won? Heh… I may be dying, but I've raised a monster…"

Roger stiffened.

"Ayr… Ayr Song is his name."

Whispers surged through the Marines nearby.

"The monster who fought Kong?! The one wielding Tengai Shinsei and Haki?! That was him!?"

Rocks continued, voice growing fainter.

"That boy… he will surpass us all. I saw it the day I found him. He doesn't just have ambition—he has fate on his side."

He chuckled again, blood dripping from his lips.

He recalled the prophecy spoken by the last scholar of Ohara before the Buster Call erased them from the map. The scholar had accessed a fragment of a Poneglyph hidden aboard a Celestial Dragon warship.

"One from among the devils shall bring heaven to its knees…"

At the time, Rocks thought the prophecy referred to himself.

Now?

He knew better.

"The future of the seas… belongs to Ayr."

With one final breath, Rocks D. Xebec smiled.

And died standing.
