Chapter 29: Night Stroll in the Forbidden Forest

Everyone agreed on one thing, Professor Sigma was merciless. So, even though today's circumstances seemed suspiciously unusual, no one dared to question another professor's lesson in his absence. After all, it was Sigma. Enough said.

The other students might've been able to joke about Sigma's cruelty, but the Slytherins and Ravenclaws certainly weren't laughing. After all, what happened to Gryffindor and Hufflepuff could just as easily happen to them, and none of them believed their houses would handle it any better.

No one knew exactly what those students had gone through, but judging from their expressions and exhausted states, it had clearly been traumatic.

Senior Slytherins and Ravenclaws could only give their juniors a look of resigned sympathy, as if to say, "Good luck, you're going to need it." But what else could they do? They were just as powerless.

Meanwhile, the Gryffindors and Hufflepuffs had barely finished their meals before racing back to their common rooms. But the moment they saw their supposedly "badly injured" housemates, they felt like they'd just bitten into an earwax-flavored Bertie Bott's Every Flavor Bean.

Their classmates, who were supposed to be limping and battered, were instead joyfully singing together while munching on snacks brought back from the Great Hall. They looked like they'd just come from a party, not a battlefield.

Needless to say, no one felt like going back to warn the next group. Let them enjoy their meal... if they could enjoy it.

By the time the final group returned, dinner had already cooled. But they didn't care, they were buzzing with excitement. The students had split into two groups: one surrounded the professors in the classroom to pepper them with endless questions; the other delivered lunch to the hard-working staff, courtesy of the ever-efficient house-elves.

And still, not one professor spilled a single detail. With no answers to their growing anxiety, the first years of Ravenclaw and Slytherin had grown visibly pale, according to the seniors who tried their best to look calm as they escorted them back.

That afternoon, Allen was still grinning, even during his punishment. This worried Filch so much that he started to suspect Allen had accidentally mixed a hallucinogen into the cleaning solution.

Allen had to spend the entire afternoon polishing trophies, so he missed the sight of the terrified faces he'd helped engineer. Still, he couldn't stop smiling. He hadn't expected that one little remark would lead to his fellow students pulling off such an elaborate prank.

It was, frankly, brilliant, especially since not a single false statement had been made. That meant they hadn't broken any school rules.

And as for Ravenclaw getting caught in the crossfire? Please. It wasn't collateral damage, it was intentional.

That evening, even Professor Sigma caught wind of the stunt. Strangely, the students didn't sense anger from him... but rather a gleam of satisfaction in his eyes, as if to say, My legacy is secure.

As Ravenclaw and Slytherin sat shell-shocked and betrayed, Hufflepuff and Gryffindor cheerfully marked the end of their third week at Hogwarts with laughter and pride.

Later That Night – Moonlight in the Hufflepuff Dormitory

Allen slipped out of bed under the silver moonlight. His wand appeared in his hand, and with a graceful flick and a few silent incantations, the peaceful breathing of his roommates deepened into an enchanted slumber.

He'd used a variation of the Sleeping Charm, less powerful, but longer-lasting and virtually silent.

Just in case anyone caught him out of bed, he had a perfect excuse lined up, and a midnight snack ran to the kitchens. Still, better safe than sorry.

Tonight was by far the most dangerous night of his school year. That was why he'd subtly dropped hints to the first years earlier. He just wanted to enjoy a little happiness before the madness began.

At the entrance to the Hufflepuff common room, he set down one of his most precious items from yesterday, a scouting ward.

No one was likely tracking him, but Allen had learned to prepare for the worst.

Tonight... he was going to make headlines.

Even though 30 Galleons couldn't buy a single healing potion (thanks to an ambush by a certain sneaky Slytherin), one of the cheapest and most useful items in the system shop was the Scouting Ward.

That was one of the key reasons he dared to take such a huge risk tonight.

Luckily, his two weeks of planning had paid off. He reached the secret tunnel undetected. That alone was half the battle.

At the giant mirror on the fifth floor, he cast Alohomora to unlock the hidden door. It led straight to Hogsmeade, specifically, to a spot very close to the infamous Shrieking Shack.

As Allen stepped into the shack, he was fully aware that if all went according to plan tonight, he'd be violating at least fifty school rules.

But he had no other choice.

It was the fastest path to earning Galleons.

His true destination lay beyond the Shrieking Shack, in the Forbidden Forest.

More precisely, underneath the Whomping Willow. Thankfully, Valor had already pressed the knot to freeze its thrashing limbs.

From there, all he had to do was follow Valor.

They moved carefully through the forest. Allen had already scouted the area, but the tangled roots and grasping grass made walking difficult. Still, that was the whole point, he had to learn how to move through terrain like this.

About an hour later, they arrived.

It was a secluded valley, blanketed in fallen leaves and gleaming faintly in the moonlight, because the entire place was cocooned in white spider silk.

Here lived the most terrifying beasts in all of Hogwarts: the Acromantulas.

Aragog, the first spider raised by Hagrid, had filled the Forbidden Forest with its offspring. They were treacherous, greedy, cunning... and each pint of Acromantula venom was worth a hundred Galleons.

Yes, they were deadly enough for even Voldemort to value their power.

But so what?

Allen watched from afar as Valor crept forward.

He wanted nothing to do with Aragog directly, not just because the old spider could talk, but because it couldn't see. That made things even worse. Its spiderlings, on the other hand, had perfect vision.

Valor had been dressed up for the occasion too, no one would recognize it as a raven anymore. It looked like a hideously feathered rooster now.

As the spiders slept, a glowing orb of ominous purple magic began to swirl between them, Valor had begun its work.

P.S.

I swear I'm not just padding the chapter, writing slice-of-life chapters like this is way more exhausting than flashy action scenes. Here's a parody CD track (inspired by Rongcheng and The Outrageous Game version of 暴走漫画) for laughs:

[A Hogwarts Ballad – Parody Version]

What made me tear up

Wasn't just that graduation ale.

What made me cry

Wasn't just that troll of a friend.

How much longer can we stay here?

You hold my hand so tight.

Still not done causing trouble,

Peeves, let's bounce tonight!

How much longer can we sing?

I'm still not done with the school song.

This place is full of magic,

I still haven't learned enough!

In that mysterious old castle,

I've never once forgotten you.

Merlin,

Please give me a girlfriend.

Walk with me through Hogwarts halls,

Until Filch catches us all in one go.

We'll wander blindly,

Trading hexes with our rivals,

No running, no hiding, no snitching.

Wizards are born brave.

Stroll with me through Snape's class

Until all the potions are ruined.

Still, we won't bow our heads.

I asked, "What do we do now?"

He said,

"Blame the author for padding the word count!"

Padding? Padding where?!

Hagrid will thump your chest with his tiny fists!
