Chapter 508: The Case Concludes, Gains - Part 2
The name Luo An Greenwood is not unfamiliar within the CIA, like when Lady Heloise was previously (chapters 110-128) enraged to the point of spitting blood and being hospitalized, and later was scapegoated by others within the CIA, again angered to the point of spitting blood and pushed into the operating room, yet failed to win the survival game, resulting in her black and white photograph being hung.
Vireness was the direct person responsible for causing Lady Heloise to spit blood and be hospitalized, but the key figure in dealing with the investigation of that case was Luo An, so the name Luo An Greenwood naturally caught the attention of a small part of the CIA.
Subsequently, Luo An's performances became increasingly better, to the point where he became the leader of the Special Investigation Team as soon as he officially turned from intern agent to senior agent, in contrast to his batchmates such as Fisher (chapter 2), who had just turned into senior agents at most. Hence, the name Luo An Greenwood naturally garnered more attention from various law enforcement departments.
Hearing Luo An mention the name Cockerland, there was a long silence on the other end of the phone, followed by a heated discussion among several people, until finally a man with a relatively gentle voice answered the phone:
"Hello, Group Leader Greenwood, you can call me Carter."
"Hello, Mr. Carter."
Luo An had no interest in the internal affairs of the CIA, nor did he wish to know the reasons behind Cockerland's departure from the CIA. He made the phone call with only two objectives: to have the other party come and pick up someone, and...
Before Luo An could finish speaking, Mr. Carter on the phone preempted him, expressing that they would fully cover the cost of Reesi's hospitalization, the treatment of the wounds on Luo An's body, and other miscellaneous financial aspects.
Luo An's mouth curled into a smile; this was the first time he had encountered someone so proactive.
"We'll be there in three hours."
After discussing briefly with Luo An over the phone, Mr. Carter chuckled warmly before hanging up, saying amiably:
"Javari Evans mentioned you when he chatted with me before; he said he was very dissatisfied with Mona's boyfriend."
"..."
After the call ended, Luo An's eyelids twitched; he hadn't expected this matter to involve such a relationship.
Previously, when he heard Cockerland say his name was Chad Evans and that he shared the same surname with Mona, Luo An had doubted whether this person was related to Javari Evans. Therefore, before going to bed last night, Luo An asked Mona to check on this matter in detail.
The result showed that they shared only the same surname, with no relation at all.
However, he never expected that Cockerland's superior would have connections to Mona's father, Javari Evans.
Luo An didn't care about Javari Evans revealing his dissatisfaction with him during conversations; from his past experiences with Javari Evans, Luo An had gotten used to the other's tendency of saying the exact opposite of what he meant, of saying one thing and meaning another.
With this in mind, Luo An figured out why Mr. Carter agreed to pay up front: it must be that Javari Evans had mentioned Luo An's characteristic of never being at a disadvantage in their conversation.
"Hmph."
Luo An's mouth twitched, feeling somewhat displeased, and decided that the next time he met with Javari Evans, he would switch the gift to vodka, which the other didn't like.
Turning around and heading towards the hospital room where Reesi was, Luo An planned to check on her current condition.
Just as he stepped out of the elevator, his cellphone suddenly rang. Luo An looked down and found the caller was his supervisor Potante Byrne.
With a bit of confusion, Luo An still pressed the answer button:
"Good morning, boss."
"Good morning."
The voice on the other end of the phone was not Potante Byrne's, but the Director Nasim, whose laughter was hearty:
"Luo An, I didn't expect you to solve this bank robbery case so quickly! Well done!"
In the Director's office, Director Nasim sat in his chair with a face full of laughter.
Following the recent poison gas case that had happened not long ago, Luo An had solved another case – the bank robbery – within less than a week.
Simultaneously surprised and excited, Director Nasim's reason for calling was because he was planning to hold another press conference once Luo An brought back the bank robbers, to properly showcase the Los Angeles Branch's case-solving speed and abilities to all sectors of society.
Only those achievements known by others are the useful ones.
Learning from Potante Byrne that Luo An was not particularly fond of press conferences, Director Nasim teased a little before hanging up the phone, amiably stating that once Luo An wraps up the case and returns to Los Angeles at ease, he has a little surprise prepared for Luo An.
"Alright, thank you, Director."
Luo An nodded in agreement, hung up the phone, and his gaze shifted subtly as he began to speculate what the surprise Director Nasim mentioned was.
Given the Director's status, the surprise couldn't possibly be too simple or shabby.
Contemplating this, he pushed open the door to Reesi's hospital room:
"How are you feeling? Reesi..."
Halfway through his sentence, Luo An stopped; the hospital bed in the room was empty, Reesi was nowhere to be seen.
"Sorry, I'm in the restroom!"
A voice came from the bathroom within the hospital room, and a few seconds later, Reesi, leaning on crutches, slowly moved out, followed by a young female nurse carefully supporting her. Both women's faces were flushed, and their breathing slightly rapid.
Luo An: "..."
The female nurse gently helped Reesi onto the hospital bed and covered her with a blanket, then nodded at Luo An and left the ward.
Seeing Luo An's expressionless face directed at her, Reesi coughed softly:
"Don't get the wrong idea; I just needed a bit of help from a nurse, that's all."
Recalling the slightly disheveled clothing of the nurse, Luo An rolled his eyes silently.
Not bothering with the minor details of Reesi's ring finger and middle finger, once Luo An was sure her wounds were no problem and she was recovering well, he turned and left the ward.
"Oh, right."
Less than five seconds after the door closed, as Reesi was just letting out a sigh of relief, Luo An abruptly reopened the door, poking half of his body in and said:
"The expenses you incurred while tailing the suspect in Las Vegas, there are some unnecessary expenditures on the bill, which will be deducted from this month's salary."
Reesi's eyes widened in surprise: "What?!"
------------
Less than three hours later, the CIA arrived at the hospital.
Under the astonished gazes of the Special Investigation Team, the group wheeled Cockerland, bed and all, into an ambulance and took him away.
...
Winslow, Chenier, Mona, and Michelle exchanged glances, each with a different expression. Luo An extended his hand to shake with a golden-haired Caucasian man in his fifties wearing a suit:
"Mr. Cockerland?"
"I've wanted to meet Group Leader Greenwood for a long time, but there never seemed to be a chance."
Cockerland took an envelope out of his pocket and handed it to Luo An, smilingly asking:
"Did Cockerland mention anything improper during the process of his capture?"
Luo An took the envelope, his eyes narrowed slightly as he saw the bills inside, and replied smilingly:
"He only told me, privately, that he has an overseas account with a substantial amount of money, and he wanted to use that money in exchange for his release."
"Anything else?"
"That's it."
Mr. Cockerland smiled and nodded, leaned closer to Luo An's ear, and whispered:
"The account number and password for that account are in the envelope. I believe the Special Investigation Team will forget about this matter, won't they?"
"Of course."
A glint flashed in Luo An's eyes as he tucked the envelope into his coat, his smile beaming:
"I've already forgotten the man's name."
Hearing this, Cockerland's eyebrows rose, and he patted Luo An's shoulder:
"Let's go have a drink sometime, my treat."
"OK."
After a brief exchange of pleasantries, Mr. Cockerland and several suited men turned and left. Winslow and the others quickly approached Luo An, with Mona frowning deeply:
"Luo An, these people..."
"Let's pretend this never happened."
Luo An shook his head, turned, and went into the room to get the envelope. Besides a check for 200,000 US Dollars, there were two sequences of numbers on the back of the envelope. Upon a brief investigation by Mona, they found the account contained 900,000 US Dollars.
Luo An told Mona to distribute the 900,000 US Dollars according to their usual ratio; he took 240,000 US Dollars, and the rest received 120,000 US Dollars each.
There were too many unsavory dealings within the CIA, and Luo An had no interest in unravelling every detail. Following a brief discussion of the matter with Winslow, Chenier, Mona, and Michelle, Luo An shifted his focus to the remaining four bank robbers.
After all, the case wouldn't be closed until the culprits were captured.
The day before the Mayor of Los Angeles City's banquet, in the afternoon, the four bank robbers—Joseph, Carter, Ferdinand, and Brooke—who had been skinned of a layer, finally emerged from the IRS building, their faces filled with bitterness after much trouble.
They hadn't gone far before they saw a SWAT troop transport vehicle.
Next to the vehicle stood a friendly and smiling Luo An, Winslow, and Chenier, waving enthusiastically at them.
The four robbers: "..."
