Chapter 537: 【An Ordinary Murder Case】
Washington D.C., a mid-sized community.
This community is located to the south of the FBI's Washington Headquarters, not too far away, and is a row house area mainly inhabited by the middle class.
The location where Mona and Caroline were situated was a high-end villa in that community, complete with a bedroom, kitchen, living room, study, and all necessary facilities; there was also a large, meticulously cared-for lawn outside the villa, making it one of the highest-grade homes in the community.
As Luo An drove to the place, there was not only Mona sitting beside him in silence but also Caroline waving at him incessantly, a female sales agent, and a man in a striped suit.
The man in the striped suit reached out his hand to Luo An with a smile, introducing himself:
"Hello, Mr. Greenwood, my name is Kelly Jax."
"Hello, Mr. Jax."
Luo An reached out to shake his hand and asked:
"And you are?"
"I am a friend of the owner of this villa; I have been in charge of managing and selling it."
Jax's smile was genuine as he said loudly:
"Additionally, I also work at the FBI Washington Headquarters, and I have heard about Group Leader Luo An's reputation for handling cases.
When I learned that Group Leader Luo An was preparing to buy this villa, I came over."
"Oh, I see!"
A look of realization crossed Luo An's face, and his "emotional perception" told him that the other party was telling the truth.
Nevertheless, Luo An was on guard; he did not believe in such coincidences.
After exchanging a few pleasantries, Luo An took a quick tour around the villa, indicating he would look at other places before taking Mona and Caroline out of the community.
"This villa is really nice."
Caroline, looking at the villa slowly receding in the rear-view mirror, asked in confusion:
"Luo An, is there something wrong?"
"There's nothing wrong; I just don't like that villa."
Recalling the information on the internal cutthroat politics between departments he had gotten from Vireness, Luo An casually answered Caroline while secretly deciding to check on this Kelly Jax later, playing it safe is always no mistake.
A few hours later, the trio found a similar three-story villa in another community to the northwest side of the FBI Washington Headquarters.
The villa with six bedrooms, four bathrooms, a kitchen, a living room, a study, and other complete facilities was previously owned by a billionaire who had made a fortune in the stock market, but due to stock losses, he was now being forced to sell this villa and other real estate investments to recoup funds.
The villa had a listing price of 5.5 million US Dollars, and after some bargaining, the deal was settled at 5 million US Dollars.
As Luo An was preparing to make the payment, Caroline suddenly stated that she would put up 2.5 million US Dollars, and Luo An only needed to pay the remaining 2.5 million US Dollars.
Upon hearing this, Mona became immediately enraged, and after a heated argument, the villa purchase funds changed to Luo An paying 1 million US Dollars, with Mona and Caroline each paying 2 million US Dollars, and both women would evenly shoulder the various taxes and fees.
Luo An: "..."
In the federal, money can do anything, from finding a villa, purchasing, signing the property transfer documents, government registration, clearing out old furniture and buying new, to moving in; the whole process took less than 10 hours, and in the latter half of the night, the trio was already residing in this villa.
The next morning, Luo An opened his eyes, silently staring at the unfamiliar ceiling for a while before realising he had moved into a new villa.
Because of Caroline, Luo An and Mona were once again sleeping in separate rooms.
Having gotten used to this arrangement, Luo An got up after washing and saw that Mona and Caroline were still not up, so he went to the kitchen to make three breakfasts.
After eating one, he drove out and called Reesi, asking her and Michelle to help check on this Kelly Jax.
Four hours later, Luo An received the investigation results from the two; based on the basic information, there was nothing unusual about Kelly Jax, and nothing seemed related to Luo An.
However, one aspect of Kelly Jax's personal relationships attracted Luo An's attention:
Kelly Jax had a good friend, named Yulaya.
This Yulaya happened to be the secretary of Antoine, the Director of the Professional Responsibility Office at the FBI Washington Headquarters.
"Quite an interesting coincidence."
Recalling the previous scene in Mr. Clement's office, where the Deputy Director of the Internal Threats Office, Trick Kennedy, and the Director of the Professional Responsibility Office, Antoine, were at odds, Luo An's eyes narrowed as he fell into deep thought.
————
Leisure time quickly passed, and by mid-next month, Luo An and his team walked into a certain area deep on the fifth floor of the FBI Washington Headquarters; the thirteenth investigation group was officially established.
The area was fully equipped with furniture and facilities like desks, computers, etc. Apart from the group leader's office, interrogation room, conference room, there was even a small resting area with not just a coffee machine and a TV, but also a few small recliners.
Just as Mona, Michelle, Reesi, Winslow, and Chenier were organizing their personal belongings at their respective stations, Vireness, dressed in a grey and black women's suit and wearing sharp makeup, walked in.
"Good morning, everyone."
Vireness gave a slight nod to the group, then handed the documents she was holding to Luo An and said in a grave tone:
"Break time's over, Investigation Team Number 13 needs to handle a case now."
"So soon? A case on the first day?"
Luo An took the folder from the other party, teased with a smile, then looked down at the contents and his brows slightly furrowed:
"A murder case?"
"That's right, a murder case."
Half an hour later, in a park beside the Potomac River in Washington, D.C., a park manager with greying hair said while walking:
"This morning, a couple came here to jog together.
Halfway through, they decided to do something exciting and started looking for a suitable spot.
Then, in a hidden corner, they found this dead body."
Following the park manager's directions, Luo An and Winslow walked to a spot by the river that was obscured by rocks, where a male body with its head facing down, wearing a black jacket and brown trousers, was lying on the sandy shore.
The park manager pointed to the body but didn't look at it, his expression somewhat pale as he said:
"This park is federal land, and according to regulations, you guys from the FBI are in charge."
"OK."
Winslow put on gloves and began examining the condition of the body, while Luo An observed the surroundings for a moment before asking:
"You said 'they' just now?"
"Yeah."
The park manager had a flash of disdain in his eyes but his tone didn't change as he said:
"That couple was two men."
"OK."
Luo An's expression was unchanged as he said:
"Have them come over, I need to ask some questions."
"Sure."
The park manager nodded and went to find the couple who were startled, not far away. Luo An turned to Winslow and asked:
"How's the condition of the body?"
"Not good, no identification on him. It might have been taken by the murderer."
Winslow took off his gloves and stood up, his expression not looking great:
"Additionally, there's a gunshot wound and blood at the back of the head.
He must have been hit with something first, then the murderer aimed a gun at his head and fired two shots.
Because of those two shots, the victim's face is blown off; facial recognition is probably not going to be possible."
"He hated the victim this much?"
Luo An frowned slightly, checking the time and said:
"The Forensic Science Section will be here in ten minutes, have them check the victim's fingerprints, DNA, as well as perform ballistics testing when they get here."
"No problem."
Winslow nodded in agreement, and at the same time, the couple that found the body was brought over by the park manager. Luo An took out the FBI's gold badge, displayed his identity briefly, and asked:
"Before you discovered the body, did you see anyone suspicious, or hear any unusual sounds?"
"No."
The two men, dressed in black and brown sportswear, shook their heads in response to Luo An's question.
They said they come to this park for early morning runs very early, and there are hardly any people around; they only ever saw a few other men and women dressed in sportswear, running early like them.
Just as Luo An was about to continue questioning, Chenier and Reesi suddenly came over from a distance and whispered to Luo An:
"Luo An, there's an issue with the surveillance in this park."
