Legendary FBI Detective

Chapter 554: Unexpected Incident, the Dead Outside the Villa

The young male on the other end of the phone was a patrol officer, who had received a notification from headquarters three minutes earlier, reporting a call for help from a community.

The sound of rapid gunfire soon ended, but apart from the caller's report, there were no other pieces of evidence. Taking the Castle Doctrine into account, the patrol officer didn't rush into the villa immediately but instead chose to contact the homeowner first.

"I'll be right back."

After hanging up, Luo An's brows were furrowed as he walked toward his car, dialing Mona's number in the process.

Mona was feeling unwell today, so Luo An had allowed her to rest at home, with Caroline staying to look after her.

Worried about their safety, Luo An had also asked Reesi to help take care of them for the day.

Michelle, Winslow, and Chenier also heard the voice from the phone and, exchanging glances, quickly followed Luo An's pace.

The call was quickly connected, and there was some noise in the background of Mona's phone:

"What's wrong? Luo An?"

Hearing Mona's voice eased Luo An slightly, but his expression grew tense:

"Where are you?"

"I'm at the hospital."

Because she was feeling under the weather, Mona's voice was weak as she leaned on the chair, replying faintly:

"Reesi went to get my medication, and Caroline is with me. You don't need to worry."

Luo An's face relaxed a bit:

"Caroline is there with you?"

"Yes."

Mona was just about to explain when Caroline took over the phone, saying:

"I've been feeling unwell these past few days too, and since Mona needed care, we both came to the hospital for a check-up."

"OK."

Hearing that both Mona and Caroline were at the hospital, Luo An immediately breathed a sigh of relief.

Entering the parking lot, Luo An told Chenier and Michelle to drive to the hospital, while he proceeded to the community with Winslow in another car.

"What's wrong?"

On the other end of the phone, hearing Luo An's arrangements, Caroline was full of confusion in the hospital:

"What happened?"

Luo An countered:

"When did you go to the hospital?"

Seeing Reesi not far away, Caroline waved at her, showing off their location, and explained while holding the phone:

"Two hours ago. Reesi drove."

"Where's Reesi?"

"She's right here."

Taking the medication handed over by Reesi, Caroline laughed and said thanks before passing the phone to her:

"Luo An has something for you."

Reesi took the phone and joked:

"What, have you also reached the time of the month when you're not feeling well?"

Luo An gave a brief account of the gunshots, and ended on a grave note:

"Chenier and Michelle have rushed to the hospital. Take good care of Mona and Caroline, thanks."

"No need to thank me, don't worry."

After listening to Luo An, Reesi immediately became very serious, promising:

"I'll take good care of them."

The call ended, and Luo An floored the accelerator, his car shooting out like lightning.

In less than twenty minutes, the car arrived at the community. Luo An and Winslow, equipped with their gear, stepped out of the car and met the metropolitan patrol officer.

Seeing the weapons in the hands of Luo An and Winslow, a flash of surprise crossed the young patrol officer's eyes.

"Hello."

Only when he saw the golden FBI badge did the young patrolman relax and extend his hand to Luo An for a handshake, saying:

"The community leader didn't tell me the owner of this villa is from the FBI."

Luo An smiled and, together with Winslow, removed the safety on his Glock 18.

The young patrolman swallowed, a movie plot flashing in his mind about someone seeking revenge against Luo An because of his FBI status, and so he tentatively asked:

"Do you need me to call in backup?"

"Thank you, but no need."

Having activated his "emotional perception," Luo An confirmed there was no one alive in the villa, so he refused the young patrolman's offer and took out his keys to open the villa's external front gate.

Luo An and Winslow, one on the left and the other on the right, found nothing unusual at the lawn; Luo An took out the keys to open the villa's main door, and the two rushed in swiftly.

After quickly checking each room and confirming there was no one else in the villa, Luo An led Winslow toward the bushes behind the villa.

Lying beside the short bushes on the grass were two bodies, emitting a stench of blood.

Both corpses were male, appearing to be around thirty years old, lying on their backs with eyes wide open, expressions of extreme surprise and shock on their faces, each with a bullet hole in the forehead.

"There are no casings on the ground, they might have been taken by the murderer."

Winslow inspected the surroundings with his head down but failed to find any casings as anticipated; however, he did spot eight guns ready to be fired hidden amongst the bushes.

The experienced Winslow recognized them as defensive measures designed by Luo An, and looking at the dark muzzles, he, with a tingling scalp, swallowed and nervously asked:

"Luo An, what kind of person are you guarding against?

Also, these two guys on the ground, they both had pistols tucked in their back, they don't look like thieves, do you know them?"

"I don't know them, but I can guess who they might be. Comparatively speaking, I'm more interested in the guy who killed them."

Luo An holstered his gun, with eyes slightly narrowed, he gestured to Winslow to call the forensic team to handle the bodies, then he turned and walked upstairs to the study.

A half-hour passed, and Mona, Chenier, and Reesi, among others, returned to the villa from the hospital.

On the lawn, seeing the forensic team processing the bodies, Caroline's face changed slightly, but having seen dead bodies in the past, she didn't vomit; she only covered her mouth.

Seeing this, Michelle took Caroline aside to distract her, while Reesi, with furrowed brows, shifted her focus onto Mona, who was being supported by Chenier, and asked in a low voice:

"Mona, can you tell me what happened?"

Covering her abdomen, Mona, with a somewhat pale face, shook her head. Reesi, somewhat anxious, was about to continue her questioning when Luo An appeared at the villa's doorway not far away and said:

"Everyone, please come to the study."

Reesi, Chenier, and the others exchanged glances and walked towards the villa's main door.

Since they had just moved in, the study was still quite empty, but luckily it was spacious enough; Winslow, Chenier, Reesi, Michelle, Luo An, Mona, and Caroline, all seven people found a chair each to sit down without the room feeling crowded and even had plenty of empty space left.

"This is Caroline, Mona's sister."

Luo An briefly introduced Caroline's identity, then took out Mona's laptop.

To protect Caroline, Luo An and Mona had designed and installed several surveillance, defense, and emergency contact devices around the villa.

Because of this, although those who infiltrated the villa had destroyed and bypassed some of the external defenses, the hidden surveillance that Luo An had strategically placed in the corners had still recorded what had happened in the villa beforehand:

First, a figure wearing a black mask and unidentifiable face jumped into the lawn from the rear fence of the villa, carefully destroying several defensive mechanisms before sneaking inside.

Ten minutes later, two men in leather jackets climbed into the lawn from another side.

The two men had mediocre skills and failed to notice the defenses Luo An had put in place; just as they were about to continue forward, the masked man suddenly jumped out of a first-floor window of the villa.

The three of them faced each other, the two men in jackets instinctively reaching for their guns, but the black-masked man was quicker. He drew his gun and fired, killing both men before swiftly fleeing the area.

"Damn it, had I known, I wouldn't have gone to the hospital today!"

After watching the surveillance footage, Caroline slapped her palm in frustration.

Luo An designed and prepared two sets of defense measures: one inside the villa, another outside.

To avoid accidents during daily life, the defenses inside the villa had to be manually activated.

Upon detecting an abnormal situation on the monitor, Caroline would press the switch; this would trigger an urgent alert to Luo An, and at the same time, the villa's defenses would be activated, ready to fend off any intruders.

But today, with Mona, Caroline, and Reesi all at the hospital, no one activated the villa's internal defenses, thus allowing the masked man a chance to break through the outer defenses and get inside the villa.

Reesi propped her chin with her hand and asked:

"So, were all these people targeting Caroline?"

"NO, the two jacketed men indeed targeted Caroline."

Luo An's eyes narrowed slightly as he played the next section of the surveillance, adding coldly:

"But the masked man, his target was me."
