Legendary FBI Detective

Chapter 601: The Person Behind the Truck Driver

"The call from the Special Service Bureau..."

Bureau Chief Robert's eyes flashed with a hint of coldness as he glanced at Luo An in front of his desk, appreciating Luo An's abilities, thinking, and methods. Robert considered him a very talented individual.

"Pity, he's one of Clement's men."

Bureau Chief Robert shook his head inwardly, pressing and holding a button on the landline phone. He then spoke to Mr. Clement, Vireness, and Luo An:

"I'll have someone deal with Francisco in person. Luo An, you take people to handle the follow-up work of that 'organization'. You may leave now."

"Yes, sir."

Luo An and Vireness nodded their heads, Mr. Clement stood up, and led both out of the office. The moment the office door closed, Bureau Chief Robert released the phone button and said:

"Patch the Special Service Bureau's call through."

"Yes, sir."

Meanwhile, in the corridor, Mr. Clement no longer wore his previous expressionless face, a slight smile forming at the corners of his mouth.

He tapped Luo An twice with his hand, saying with admiration:

"Luo An, you did very well in this operation."

After a pause, as if feeling the tone was too light, Mr. Clement nodded emphatically, adding:

"Exceptionally well!"

Vireness also wore a full-faced smile, pride evident in her eyes. Although Francisco was taken away by the Bureau Chief's men, the greatest merit belongs to Luo An, who snatched him back from the Special Service Bureau's clutches.

Luo An did not say much in modesty, merely smiled, then as if remembering something, he asked:

"Sir, the orders previously were to act tomorrow, but I apprehended the person today..."

This act was, in any case, a violation of orders, and on top of that, the earlier scuffle with a Special Service Bureau agent. Although Luo An wasn't overly worried about severe punishment, he still felt the need to ask.

Mr. Clement slightly furrowed his brows, turning his gaze to Vireness.

Vireness immediately understood and set aside the smile on her face, saying solemnly:

"It was my order, sir."

The case in question had extensive implications, and some of the mistakes Luo An made during the investigation were, in fact, potentially significant.

Luo An's rank was still not high enough; Mr. Clement's intention was to have someone taller take the fall.

But Mr. Clement himself was too tall, and it was inappropriate, whereas Vireness's rank was just right—no one would deliberately target her over this issue, and she was also capable of handling the aftermath of the incident well.

"I understand."

Seeing Vireness stepping forward to take responsibility pleased Mr. Clement, who then looked again at Luo An and instructed:

"Take good care of the follow-up work on the 'organization's' case, and proceed according to procedures. It doesn't matter if it takes a bit longer."

"Yes, sir."

Luo An nodded in agreement, Mr. Clement then gave a few more instructions before leaving with his secretary.

Watching Mr. Clement's retreating figure and recalling the earlier conversation in the Bureau Chief's office, Luo An realized that Bureau Chief Robert and Mr. Clement were probably not in the same camp.

Or rather, the two shared overall interests within the FBI, but on a personal interests level, they likely each had their own directions.

Vireness led Luo An into the elevator, and as the numbers flickered, Luo An asked:

"Sir, what happened with Michelle and Winslow from my investigative team going missing?"

"They were brought in for questioning by the Monitoring Department."

Mentioning this incident suddenly turned Vireness's expression cold, indicating she also found out later and immediately went to the Monitoring Department to retrieve the two agents.

"The Monitoring Department?"

Luo An's expression grew slightly heavy, not understanding why the Monitoring Department would coincidentally appear at that time.

"This incident might be related to Antoine, the head of the Professional Responsibility Office. He has good relations with some Jews within the Special Service Bureau."

Vireness lowered her voice, explaining:

"I also found out why the President has heard of you, Luo An. It was Antoine who praised you at various receptions and dinners, raising quite a few people's awareness of you.

I still haven't figured out his purpose. If you encounter anything out of the ordinary in the future, make sure to contact me promptly."

Luo An's eyes flickered with a hint of gloom as he whispered:

"I understand, sir."

Ding——

The numbers stopped flashing, and the elevator door opened. Vireness said lastly:

"Don't rush the follow-up to the 'Organization' case, handle it slowly, take your time."

"Understood."

Luo An smiled and nodded. Mr. Clement had just said the same thing, and he and Vireness meant the same thing; this case was special, the longer it took to handle the aftermath, the greater the credit they would get afterwards.

It's like the work in certain departments; if you have a task that should take three days to complete, but you finish it in one day by working overtime, you'll get nothing but a few simple words of praise and end up with even more work.

Luo An returned to the office area of Investigation Team 13. At the moment, only Michelle, Mona, and Winslow were there; Chenier and Reesi were still "chatting" with the truck driver in the interrogation room.

Luo An looked at Winslow and Michelle and asked:

"Are you guys alright?"

"We're fine."

The two shook their heads. They had been taken away by the Monitoring Department for less than ten minutes before Vireness arrived. Winslow said with a smile that he hadn't even warmed his seat before being taken away.

Without further discussion on the matter, Luo An briefly chatted a few words and then prepared to head to New York again.

The people from the 'Organization' had been caught previously, and after the Special Service Bureau took over, they didn't do much but threw the group into the temporary prison of the New York Police Department. Now, Luo An and his team needed to bring those people out and start the interrogation process.

As everyone was packing up, Chenier and Reesi walked out of the interrogation room, their expressions not looking too good.

Luo An was changing clothes in the team leader's office and hadn't come out yet when Mona hurriedly asked:

"Did you find anything out? Who is the truck driver's secretive backer?"

"It's a businessman."

Reesi carelessly threw the interrogation record onto the table. Chenier sat back down, turned on the computer, typed a name into the browser, and quickly brought up a photo, spreading her hands:

"It's him, this guy who always appears at various charity dinners and charity news."

"Wow."

Looking at the photo of the white man dressed in a suit, with a slicked-back haircut, who looked respectable and righteous, Winslow and Michelle flashed looks of disdain and contempt.

Mona thought for a moment, then continued to ask:

"So, this truck driver, he's not from the same group as the ones who kidnapped Francisco when Luo An and I were chasing him?"

In the entire operation, four groups of people had appeared.

One group was led by FBI agent Luo An and the SWAT team; another was the Special Service Bureau gang.

There was also the truck driver who tried to block Luo An and Mona, and the group of people including the man in the pinstripe suit who had successfully captured Francisco but were defeated by Luo An.

"No."

Reesi shook her head:

"The truck driver said he doesn't know those people at all."

"It's someone else's doing?"

Mona was a bit exasperated, counting on her fingers:

"We intended to arrest Francisco to uncover the truth; Francisco wanted to escape; the Special Service Bureau intended to take over and suppress the case; the truck driver intended to stop us...

Did the group of people in pinstriped suits kidnap Francisco in order to take him to meet someone?"

"We'll find out after interrogating them."

Reesi smiled:

"After all, Luo An had already caught them before."

"I have bad news, everyone."

Just then, Luo An, who had changed his clothes, emerged from the team leader's office and waved the phone in his hand, saying:

"The people in pinstripe suits have died in the hospital."
