Chapter 17: Level 4
Max stood on a boulder, as he looked around for a small cave where they could rest. Fortunately, the cave system provided a lot of safe points.
In just a few seconds of searching, he found a relatively good cave which was higher off the floor, so they wouldn't have to worry about any attacks too, well to some extent.
"That should do it," Max smiled and gestured for the two ladies to follow him.
After traversing a short distance, they reached the cave and slumped down on the ground. For a moment, nobody talked as they simply had their body get some rest.
For the last few hours, they had been going around to look for any monsters and then proceeded to slay them.
Lower-level monsters were easy and swift to defeat, but the higher-leveled monsters were a tough nut. Nonetheless, they had managed to hunt the monsters while keeping themselves alive.
Having a healer definitely proved to be helpful as there were many instances where they were injured, but Charlotte quickly healed them.
The last one of their battle was most gruesome because they met a monster Max had no clue about. After all, he had not personally made all the monsters of this world.
Some were just random and they were harder to deal with. Nevertheless, they managed to defeat it and decided to call it a day.
Max sighed, feeling a strange pull on his soul. It was weird, as when he checked, there was nothing in sight. However, he still felt that pull, as if something was calling him.
"The pull from the portal, huh. It really pulls your soul... or rather, the world pulls you back," Max thought, remembering how the labyrinth worked.
"Phew! Do you want the Mana Shard, Dummy?" Stelle drank a mouthful of water and asked.
She had extracted the Mana Shard from their last battle and it was with her. Sadly, the monster was too strong for Max so he waved his hand and said,
"Just keep it! It's better if you level up once or two more."
"I can't go past Level 9, you know," Stelle said, as she passed the water bottle to Max. "You're really strange. You didn't even absorb much Mana Shard, yet you leveled up."
Indeed, he had leveled up. Thinking of that, a smile formed on Max's lips as he thought, "Status;"
...

He had leveled up once and had also accumulated almost half of the EXP needed for the next level. It was a terrifying speed to say the least, as even someone like Stelle took a few days to reach Level 6.
"Maybe I'm just that gifted," Max chuckled and passed the water bottle to Charlotte. He was going to say more, but his stomach betrayed him and called for food.
His mouth remained silent, as he gave his belly a speechless look. Then, he coughed and asked, "Do you guys have anything extra?"
Stelle and Charlotte looked at each other, then burst out in laughter. They spent a good amount of time on that, making even Max smile.
"You really didn't bring anything to eat? Really?" Stelle asked between her laughter.
"Well, I'm too poor so I can't afford any packed food," Max shrugged and said.
He really was too poor since he had to spend his everything for his treatment... he still remembered it and would definitely take his revenge.
For now though, he really couldn't afford anything and also couldn't steal from the kitchen. Not to mention they couldn't eat the monsters from the labyrinth as they held Corruption.
[You were too excited, fufu. So excited that you even forgot that you need food to survive.]
Charlotte stopped laughing, as she remembered Max's story. All of a sudden, the situation didn't seem that funny, and she couldn't help but pity him.
"Don't worry. We can share with you," Charlotte said, as she took out a big lunch box. It was encased in a dark cover, which Max was sure was used to keep the food fresh and warm.
Stelle didn't say anything on that matter, as she also didn't feel like poking fun at someone's poverty. She just took her share of food and began to eat it.
The atmosphere turned solemn, as they enjoyed the light dinner of dry fruits, nuts, honeyed breads, and some other supplements.
Max didn't like the mood so he said, "Who made this bread? They're too delicious!"
"I cook sometimes, so I personally made them since this was Stelle's first Dive in a labyrinth," Charlotte said with a sweet smile, obviously liking his praise.
"They're the best," Max said with bread stuffed in his mouth. He gulped it down and said, "I'm really envious of your future husband who will get to eat food from your hands daily."
Charlotte's face flushed hearing that, as she fondled the corner of her robes and muttered softly, "It's not like I learned cooking for someone else..."
"Oii! A child is here so stop flirting," Stelle glared at Max and said. "Don't you dare get even two metres close to my Big Sis. You aren't worthy of her."
Max just saved his hand in dismissal and said, "Yeah yeah, who takes a child seriously?"
"You!!" Stelle choked on her fruits as she pointed her finger at him.
"Chill, Brat. I'm just teasing," Max chuckled and said. "Anyway, I'll take the first watch and then we can take shifts every two hours. Six hours should be enough for us to get refreshed."
Even though they wanted to continue fighting and hunting monsters to level up, their bodies gave up on them. They were too exhausted to do anything else, so the two ladies simply accepted his arrangements.
"Dummy, I'm warning you. Don't you dare peek at my Big Sis while she is sleeping!" Stelle put her thumb on her neck and made a cutting sound. "Remember it well!"
Max gave her a look and then asked Charlotte, "Is she really this annoying to everyone?"
"Not everyone," Charlotte whispered softly before shaking her head. "Whatever! I'm too tired for this so I'm sleeping. You two can continue to argue if you want."
Stelle showed her tongue at him and also went off to sleep.
