Chapter 224 Touching Heart (Two Chapters Combined)_4
Martin thought for a moment, "I can't remember."
Luke took out a photo of Nancy's car, "Have you seen this car before?"
"No," the two said in unison.
The two were then shown items stolen from Nancy's house, but they still didn't recognize them.
Luke was getting frustrated. The two households had a huge financial gap and were not in the same social class. Logically, they shouldn't have had any interaction.
No relevant clues were found during the questioning.
After taking their statements, Luke escorted the two out of the office.
Just as he returned to his seat, Matthew exclaimed, "Guys, I've found a major clue."
Vincent, the deputy chief, asked, "What major clue?"
Matthew cocked his head, "Guess?"
The deputy chief chuckled, "Next time you try to keep us in suspense, I'll come over and kick your butt."
"OK." Matthew spread his hands, "I investigated the victim's records and found that she purchased personal accident insurance with a coverage of one million US dollars. That amount of money could substantially improve a family's living conditions, even allowing a family to jump social strata."
The deputy chief asked, "Who's the beneficiary?"
"The victim's husband, Andesie."
The deputy chief slapped his hand, "What did I say? What did I say!
Luke, what are you waiting for? Hurry up and arrest someone."
…
Half an hour later, inside a black Ford Explorer.
Blackie was driving and said, "You know what? I could tell all along, Nancy's husband is the murderer.
Luke, do you remember? I was always watching her husband when we were at Nancy's house.
I just knew this guy was trouble.
I still remember, his whole demeanor changed when he saw the bloodstains.
Yep, he definitely has issues."
Luke smiled, not bothering to point out his hindsight.
Jackson couldn't bear it anymore, "Aren't you being too hasty?
You can't just conclude that her husband is the murderer because the victim bought insurance and he is the beneficiary.
Plenty of people buy insurance, and the policy is not evidence of murder."
Blackie's eyes widened, "You wanna argue with me again, huh? Well then, who do you think the murderer is?"
Jackson shrugged, "I don't know, I just think you're being too hasty.
Nancy's death may not be related to the personal accident insurance at all."
"I'm sure it's related." Blackie looked at Luke, "Who do you think is right?"
Luke lifted his chin, "Andesie's house is just ahead. Let's ask and find out."
Blackie parked the car near the victim's house.
Luke made quick arrangements. It was still him and Blackie knocking on the door, while Jackson waited in the car for backup.
Blackie knocked, but there was no response.
Blackie continued to knock, still no response.
Just then, a black man with graying hair and wearing glasses, holding a coffee cup, came out from the house next door, "Hey, are you looking for Andesie?"
Luke flashed his badge, "Yes, I'm Luke, the deputy chief of the Robbery and Murder Department, investigating his wife's case. Is he home?"
"No, Andesie left with the kids in the car early this morning."
"They all left?"
"Yes."
"Do you know where they went?"
"No, I saw it from the window and didn't come out to ask." The black man finished speaking, showing a curious expression, "I heard his wife went missing, how is it now?"
Luke didn't hide the truth, "Nancy was murdered."
"Oh my god, that's terrible, she was a good person, young, with three kids..." The black man sighed.
"Sir, what's your name?"
"Mick is fine."
"Are you close with Andesie's family?"
"Sort of, we sometimes attend parties together on weekends. They're pretty decent folks."
Luke followed up, "Did they have any unusual behavior recently?"
"Uh..." Mick hesitated.
"Mick, you can trust me. I promise I won't tell anyone," Luke assured earnestly.
Mick hesitated for a moment, then said in a low voice, "Lately, they have been arguing quite often. One time it got so bad, the police were called."
"Do you know what they were arguing about?"
"That time it seemed to be about their eldest daughter. She's Andesie's daughter with his ex-wife, and she wasn't very close to Nancy to begin with. Now, being in her rebellious teenage years..."
"How was Nancy's relationship with the other two children?"
"Pretty good, she was a fine mother.
And a good person. She didn't deserve this. It's going to be tougher for the family from now on..." Mick had finished speaking when he heard his wife calling him from inside the house,
"Sorry, my wife is calling me for dinner."
After saying that, Mick turned and left.
Blackie approached, "I just took a look through the window. It looks like the stuff inside the room was packed up.
Andesie might have run away!"
Luke had a different opinion, "No, he wouldn't have run."
"Why not?"
Luke looked around, "First possibility, he's not the murderer; there's no need for him to run.
Second possibility, if he is the murderer, he did it for Nancy's personal accident insurance money.
He wouldn't leave before collecting the insurance payout."
